New Music Strategies -
1 days and 8 hours ago
I don’t normally report the music industry news on New Music Strategies. I have the
Newswire for that - and there are other
people who do it way better. I generally keep to ways in which independent musicians and
music businesses can capitalise on the shifts in the music industries.
Here, I think, there’s sufficient overlap to justify it - and it’s very big news
indeed.
You may have already heard that Entertainment UK, the
single biggest supplier of all of the top DVD, music and game titles to each of the main
High Street retailers in Britain is in administration. The fallout from this is, from a major
retailer’s perspective, utterly catastrophic.
Directly affected, of course, are the company’s biggest retail clients: Woolworths (who
share owners with Entertainment UK), WH Smith, Morrisons and Tesco. Collectively, those four
command a lion’s share of the retail market for the biggest-selling hits in the
entertainment field.
But add to that today’s announcement by Zavvi (formerly
Virgin Megastore) that they will not be taking orders for any CDs, games or DVDs. We’re
three weeks out from Christmas, and it seems that nobody can guarantee supply of Coldplay,
Britney, Mamma Mia, Wall-E, GTA4 or Spore.
Together with the tight economic environment, the implication seems to be that the British public
are in for a bit of hunt down the Long Tail for interesting and affordable Christmas gift ideas.
Just a shame you can’t giftwrap an mp3.

Bangkok’s airports are now open. The protesters have agreed to end their protests after the
country’s top
court ordered the dissolution of the ruling party which forced the Prime Minister to step
down.
Military troops are now guarding the airports. Tourists are advised to
contact their airlines and tourism offices to check for flight schedules.
Last week protesters belonging to the People’s Alliance for Democracy have occupied
Bangkok’s
two airports demanding the removal of the corrupt government. The airport takeover has
stranded more than 300,000
passengers in the country.
Because of the favorable court order, the protesters have declared victory. However, they
vowed
to launch similar protest actions in the future if reforms are not instituted. Excerpts from
PAD’s
statement:
“The PAD would like to call on whichever side that attains power to run the country to find
a solution for the current problems and not to create conditions for another political turmoil in
the country. Do not bring to power people from the Thaksin regime. Address the wrongdoings
conducted by those in the Thaksin regime. Join with the people in making new politics a
reality.”
The PAD would like to make the following pledges.
1. If a proxy government of the Thaksin regime is set up again or if there is an attempt to amend
the Constitution or the law to whitewash the wrongdoings of those in the Thaksin regime, to
benefit politicians, or to lessen the power of the King, the PAD will return.
2. From now on, if there is any government which comes into power but is insincere in its efforts
to launch new politics with the people, the PAD will return.
Thaksin is former Prime Minister of Thailand who was ousted in a coup two years ago. PAD accused
the last two Prime Ministers of being puppets of Thaksin.
Thai Politico interprets the PAD
statement:
“The implication at the moment is that if the next PM is not to the PAD's liking they will
occupy the airport again. Will the security forces now completely secure Thailand's airports so
that nothing like this can take place again? Or will we see the army back off like scared rabbits
into the corner?”
New Mandala believes PAD’s victory will be
short-lived:
“The celebrations by the yellow shirts at Suvanabhumi will be short-lived. The parliament
has not been dissolved and the government looks very likely to maintain its majority. The
Democrat-except-when-you-can’t-win-an-election-and-then-a-judicial-coup-is-OK Party simply
can’t muster the numbers. More blatant judicial or military intervention will be required
to remove the government.”

Political cartoon by Sacravatoons
PAD is popular in Bangkok (but the airport takeover has made it less popular today). PAD is
accused of having close ties with Bangkok’s elite. On the other hand, most of the rural
voters are supportive of Thaksin’s party. Someone asked: What if the farmers staged their
own protest against PAD and the urban elite by refusing to plant rice?
Stranded tourists are now recounting their experience in Thailand. Tuesdaynight narrates
how he and his wife were able to leave the country by traveling to Malaysia and Singapore by
land. He writes:
“Finally, I have to say, after all this, I consider us to be lucky. We found a way out of
the country and it worked. I truly feel for the hundreds of thousands people whose travel was
impacted because of this. More importantly, I feel for the Thai people who have yet to find some
form of political stability.”
Despite the airport chaos, life in Bangkok
seemed like normal the past week. Oneditorial writes:
“During the week, I called my family to get their views on this event. They did not seem to
be thinking too much about what is going on. They still carry on their daily lives as usual. As a
matter of fact, on the day I talked to my mother on the phone, the entire family was completely
absorbed in watching a Thai soap on the telly, never mind the fact that the country is in a state
of political turmoil. I just wish I could be as detached as them.”
Andrew Biggs asks if the airport crisis
would produce positive results:
“Could it be that the pain, shame and anger we have all experienced with the PAD’s
closure of the airport actually be heralding a new era of politics in Thailand? Could it possibly
be that something good is going to come out of all this?”
An anonymous commenter criticizes the
organizer of the protests:
“Im sure terrorist groups in South-East Asia have witnessed the complete lack of security
at the airport and thus it would be a sitting duck for groups who plan terrorist attacks against
planes and passengers. Bangkok as a major hub? I dont think so any more. What airline will want
to fly in and out of Bangkok when the airports own security guards ran like scared children from
their own people. Shame on Thailand for allowing this anti democratic group to act like
terrorists and hold an entire country to ransom. Thailand is about to see the trickle down from
this catastrophe and I pity the ordinary people who were not involved in this protest but could
lose jobs.”
Gabriella
Haynes describes the mood in Bangkok:
“The atmosphere in wider Bangkok since the protests started has been calm and business as
usual in general. While the city’s residents don’t take the sporadic and seemingly
random spurts of violence and the loss of life and income lightly, there is no sense of
widespread panic and concern. International news agencies report airport mayhem and interview
distressed and worn-out tourists stranded in the country, yet most Thais I have spoken to only
express concern about the potential violence of the situation and concern for the economy.”
And let’s not forget that pro-government supporters are also numerous in the city:
“The PAD has ceased their protests for now but the capital has also been inundated with
pro-government supporters, which means the situation has not been completely diffused.”

Lunchmeat
Thomas
Wanhoff from Vietnam is disappointed that tourists are complaining of missed flights while
Bangkok protesters are fighting for some cause:
“This is just unbelievable. There are people in Thailand trying to fight for democracy (but
of course is their understanding of), at least stand up against the corrupt government, and
tourists are just complaining about missed flights.”

Anti-government protesters are still occupying Bangkok’s two major airports.
Thailand’s tourism officials have estimated that 240,000 passengers are still stranded in
the country.
Initial flight
schedules have been released for stranded passengers. Tourists who want to leave Thailand are
embarking on a bus trip towards
Malaysia even if they will have to pass Thailand’s southern provinces, where an
insurgency exists.
As expected, Thailand’s highest Court found the ruling party guilty of
electoral fraud. What is the implication of the order? The ruling party is disbanded, the
Prime Minister could no longer hold public office, and other party leaders are barred from
holding a public office for five years. A caretaker
Cabinet is now in charge of Thailand, led by Deputy Prime Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul. Out
of 34 cabinet ministers, only 12 have been banned from holding public offices. The remaining 22
can continue to govern until a new Cabinet is ready.

Thai Photoblogs
Since the Prime Minister has stepped down already, will the protesters finally leave the
airports? No. They do not want to recognize the authority of the caretaker Cabinet. So they
remain in control of the airports. The protests continue.
It is clear by now that the airport siege orchestrated by the People’s Alliance for
Democracy (PAD) is supported by Bangkok’s business elite and the military. There is
no
shortage of food for the more or less 15,000 PAD members in the airports. It was also
reported that 5,000 blankets were donated to PAD a few days ago.
Even the police forces are not too determined to disperse the protesters. They seem contented to
drop
fliers from helicopters onto the Bangkok airports ordering PAD to leave the premises.
In his final message as Thailand’s leader, the ex-Prime Minister declared: “I did my
best to administer the country.” Thailand Crisis reacts:
“By traveling to Peru for one week, in full national crisis, to attend a totally useless
APEC meeting? By hidding in Chiang Mai, afraid of his own shadow, afraid of the army? Sure he did
his very best. Thaksin’s brother-in-law will remain one of the
dullest Thai Prime Minister ever.”
While the Court was delivering its decision, government supporters were outside the building. The
crowd did not like the Court’s decision. Nirmal Ghosh observes:
“Disbelief, disappointment as dissolution handed down on PPP (People Power Party). Some
people are boo-ing. The verdict is photocopied and distributed. One woman snatches it from
another and crumples it, throws it on the ground & stamps on it. There is a sense of
deflation in the crowd; they seem rudderless.”
The airport chaos is hurting Thailand’s tourism industry, even the economy of its neighbors. But it
must be pointed out that ordinary persons, Thais and foreigners, are suffering more. Tourists are
stranded; Bangkok residents are losing their jobs, especially those who are working in the
airports. Thai Tales had a conversation with a travel
agent:
“Today I walked past my travel agent on the way to lunch. She said that she would be paid
half her salary this month and that the travel agency could close if the situation continued.
But, she said, her plan was to sell iced coffee from a cart if she was no longer a travel agent.
“The fallout may indeed be incalculable, but when it’s people you know, people who
make your life a bit easier by being good at their jobs and a bit more pleasant by just being in
it, the costs suddenly become measurable and terrible.”
Nomadic Matt, who works in the airport, has lost his
job:
“The damage is done though. There will be no high season this year and an expected 1
million people will be out of work because of the drop in tourism numbers (including me as I work
at the airport!!!!). No one is going to want to come visit now. Most tourists are canceling their
vacations and many that are interviewed just want to leave and never come back.”
To avoid being beaten by partisans, Richard Barrow could not wear red
or yellow T-shirts outside his house. Red is the color of government supporters; and yellow
is PAD’s color:
“I had to pop out just now in the car to go and run an errand in town. I forgot I was
wearing a yellow shirt as today is Monday. I hadn't change after coming back from school. My
neighbor was really scared for me and told me that I should go back and change first. Things are
getting scary on the streets. Hardly anyone wears yellow these days. And if they do, then only on
Mondays. Hardly any teacher at my school wears yellow in case they are associated with the PAD.
Some parents told me that they told their children not to wear red or yellow when they go out any
more. What my neighbor said to me is true. In particular if I go out late at night. This is how
bad it is getting on the streets these days.”

Political cartoons by Sacravatoons
Traffic around the airport has deteriorated. Dreaming of Hanoi writes:
“My day-to-day life has not been affected. Work is normal, as is my social life...Our
school is nearer to the airport, and it seemed like there was a mass exodus into Bangkok from
that direction. The highway was clogged. We had to hop out of the taxi and walk all the way to
Sukhumvit. We then took motorcycles home. This trip usually takes 30 mins, but on Friday night it
took over an hour; I’m sure it took even longer for those who chose to sit and wait in the
traffic.”
Recognizing that ordinary persons are suffering, Brit in Bangkok
criticizes the elite:
“The ones who I feel sorry for though are the ‘average' Thais and not the wealthy
Thais that are destroying this country and trying to take democracy away from normal people.
Meanwhile, I'm making sure that all my purchases from now on will be from market stalls as much
as possible, in an attempt to support every day Thais and not these wealthy as*holes that run
this country. The less money these jokers have the better and, from now on, I'm going to make
sure they get none of mine.”
Andrew Biggs has a message for both the
politcians and protesters:
“What has happened to my beloved Thailand? If you truly love Thailand, you should not be
wearing yellow or red. We are past that. It was cute six months ago but it is deadly now. It
doesn’t matter if you hate or support the government. Let’s stop this madness.
Somchai, resign. PAD, get out of the airport.”
Via Twitter, Bangkok residents are reacting to the latest updates:
Secadra: Protesters
still there and the pro-gov aren't happy with the decision. Not much happens in a rush
Charlespulaski: Thai
court orders ruling party dissolved What kind of Mickey Mouse Democracy is this? Can they even do
that?
Nomadicmatt:
Well, once they open up that damn airport, I'll be moving….where should i go?
Badtzrawks:
excitement?!?! man, it doesnt seem that PAD will return us our airports loey ah' no sign!!
Noobam: I'm a PAD too
but I don't agree with the strike at the airport at all. Esp. with bullshit govt like this

Surfing the Internet carries all sorts of minor hazards, including pop-up ads, vitriolic
bloggers and time-wasting videos. As of last week, it also carries one that is anything but minor:
the threat of criminal prosecution. That's the implication of the jury verdict in the case of Lori
Drew in the infamous MySpace case. The Missouri mother was convicted of three federal misdemeanor
charges for setting up a MySpace account to masquerade as a 16-year-old boy and exchange messages
with Megan Meier, who killed herself after "Josh Evans" spurned her.
