My morning sermon from the Trinity Road Chapel in London on the tremendous words of Jesus after His resurrection.

Signé sur l'excellent label Touch Go, le groupe est un des acteurs majeurs de la scène noise rock aux Etats-Unis, avec d'excellents combos tels que Jesus Lizard, Table, Swob ou Tad. Shellac est composé de Todd Trainer à la batterie, Bob Weston à la basse et Steve Albini à la guitare. La preuve par trois :/p p class=spipstrong class=spipBob Weston : i class=spipMass/i /strong/p p class=spipLourde comme un coup de massue, raclante comme un bon gros crachat qu'on viendrait chercher au fond de sa gorge. Bien avant dans le mix, elle guide les morceaux, au taquet. Dur de résister à ce gros pilier, à l'image du grassouillet strong class=spipBob/strong, ancien membre des strong class=spipVolcano Suns/strong, groupe post-punk en activité dans les années 80, mais pouvant s'affairer comme ingénieur du son ou producteur quand l'envie lui prend./p p class=spipstrong class=spipSteve Albini : i class=spipVelocity/i /strong/p p class=spipAgressive, saillante, aiguisé comme un couteau de boucher, comme une lame de rasoir. La guitare de ce nain à lunette vous malmène, vous en fais voir de toutes les couleurs. Elle nettoie vos esgourdes de fond en comble, n'est pas joué pour plaire, mais simplement pour éclater le maigre organe que vous possédez entre vos jambes. Sautillante, elle administre par petites piques, puis dans un franc bordel sonique, une intensité extrême. A l'image d'strong class=spipAlbini/strong : un génie incontestable, doublé d'un immense connard. Sa voix, froide, insultante, n'est qu'un élément de plus pour vous coller la face contre terre./p p class=spipstrong class=spipTodd Trainer : i class=spipTime/i /strong/p p class=spipBatteur exceptionnel, marque de fabrique du groupe (pas étonnant que la batterie soit placée au même niveau que guitariste et bassiste lors des shows). Chaque coup est pensé, maîtrisé, donné avec la plus grande puissance qui soit. Ce gringalet, à la coupe de cheveux improbable, installe une tension. Une tension dingue, éprouvante, magistrale, motrice même de la machine strong class=spipShellac/strong (i class=spipCrow/i, incroyable). Une tension qui amène bien évidemment son lot de haine et de rage, omniprésente dans la musique du trio./p p class=spipSecouez avec vigueur le tout, et vous obtiendrez strong class=spipShellac/strong. L'essence même de ce qu‘aurait dû toujours être le rock, c'est-à-dire une musique agressive, menaçante, imprévisible. Dépouillé, désossé, la production du sieur strong class=spipAlbini/strong est rachitique, aucun effet n'est rajouté, le groupe sonne comme il sonnerait live. strong class=spipShellac/strong n'est pas cool, ni tendance, ni fashion. Et strong class=spipShellac/strong vous emmerde./p p class=spipEn ces temps ou porter des slims et soigner sa coiffure est un gage de crédibilité musicale, où la musique elle-même est reléguée au second plan, il est grand de revenir aux fondamentaux. A ces types qui se donnent corps et âmes pour ce qu'ils jouent, qui ne font pas semblant, sincère dans leur démarche artistique, simplement soucieux de jouer pour eux, pour leur bon plaisir, sans se soucier du jugement de quiconque. I am not totally sure about this fact but I think there were possibly more martyrs in the 20th century than in all the previous 19 centuries total. It is evangelical, ecumenical and outward looking in an unusual way. It has a superb faculty and is a great place to get into a smallish community of learners and worshipers. I have frequently recommended Beeson and not one student I have urged to enroll there has ever regretted it./span/ppspan style=font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana;I bring this up because the chapel at Beeson is one of the most magnificent seminary chapels in all of America. Dr. George#39;s thoughtful engagement in planning this magnificent chapel shows in every possible way. There is Augustine, Chrysostom, Luther, Calvin, Spurgeon and a host of others. Even the pulpit has a carving of one of the great preachers of the church. /span/ppspan style=font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana;#0160;One of the more important aspects of the Beeson Chapel design is that martyrs are also priminently featured, as they should be. One of the martyrs prominently feature there is Bishop Janani Luwum (d. 1977). Bishop Luwum was the leader of the Anglican Church of Uganda under Idi Amin#39;s reign of terror during the 1970s. (emThe Last King of Scotland/em, an award winning film, portrays the reign of Amin quite graphically and very powerfully.) Amin empersonally/em killed Bishop Luwum on February 16, 1977. That same year the church marked its 100th anniversary in Ugandspan style=font-size: 15px; font-family: Verdana;a. /span/spanspan style=font-size: 15px; font-family: Verdana;The blood of this wonderful bishop eventually became the seed of a new church in Uganda, one with spiritual power and fidelity matched by none. /span/ppspan style=font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana;Janani Luwum was ordained in 1956 while Uganda was still a protectorate of Great Britain. He was an active leader in the East African Revival and frequently told his congregations: quot;God does not have grand-children; He only has sons and daughters.quot; By this simple statement he urged people to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, not a second-hand one. The East African Revival was one of the greatest movements of the Holy Spirit in the 20th century. It taught millions to trust God and to live through hard times with faith. It prepared Christians both to live well and to die well. /span/ppspan style=font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana;a href=http://johnharmstrong.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451cfe769e2010536107419970b-pi style=float: right;img alt=Luwum border=0 class=at-xid-6a00d83451cfe769e2010536107419970b src=http://johnharmstrong.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451cfe769e2010536107419970b-800wi style=margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; title=Luwum //a Bishop Luwum was accused of treason, a atypical Amin charge against anyone who didn#39;t give complete obeisance to him. Death was then sure to follow. Luwum said to Amin, quot;We must see the hand of God in this.quot; The bishop#39;s trouble with Amin actually began when he criticized the abuse of human rights in Uganda in order to protect his own people and the lives of others. quot;Public executions, disappearances and expulsions abounded,quot; says writer Mark Fackler. To criticize Amin during his eight-year reign of terror was to invite certain death. But Luwum knew he had to speak up for his people and neither feared Amin or death. He gladly faced his own martyrdom in order to speak truth to power and to show real Christian love. /span/ppspan style=font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana;After Luwum was shot his family and some of the bishops were forced to flee the country. But the church continued to survive under intense persecution. In April of 1979 the regime fell to the joint forces of Ugandan rebels and Tanzanian troops. Amin fled and died outside of Uganda many years later. Today the church in Uganda thrives and the gospel is changing lives with incredible power. /span/ppspan style=font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana;Standing in the pulpit at the Beeson Chapel I have looked at this bust of Janani Luwum and been powerfully reminded that the martyrs should always be a major part of the Christian story. From 36 A.D. until the present moment in history the martyrs have played a huge role in the faithful witness of Christ to his people and to the watching world.
