A study published today in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology concludes that
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is as effective as anti-depressants in controlling long-term
depression. I've had personal experience with MBCT. About ten years ago, my personal life hit a
very low point that left me more than sad -- I was paralyzed, weepy, unable to see the bright side
of anything, listless, always tired. I recognized the symptoms of depression and spoke to a
psychiatrist I knew. He recommended MBCT in the form of David D Burns's The Feeling Good Handbook.
Despite its cheesy title, the book was just what I needed: a series of simple exercises that used
empiricism (writing down what happened around you and how it made you feel, and what alternative
explanations you could think of for others' behavior) to help change the habits of thought that led
to the downward spiral. It wasn't long before the depression lifted, never to return (so far -- and
if it does, I know what I'll do). I've never spoken in public about this before, but I have quietly
passed on the book to many of my friends when it seemed needed, always with good results. So I'm
not surprised to hear that this research ("led by Professor Willem Kuyken at the Mood Disorders
Centre, University of Exeter, in collaboration with colleagues at the Centre for Economics of
Mental Health (CEMH) at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, Peninsula Medical
School, Devon Primary Care Trust and the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences
Unit") shows that MBCT works in cases of chronic, long-term depression. This is especially good
news, since chronic depression (which runs in my family) is especially hard on the person
experiencing it as well as those around her or him. The holidays are prime-time for difficult
emotions. If you or someone you know is experiencing depression, know that it's not a sign of
weakness or personal inadequacy. Help is simple, widely available and effective. Professor Willem
Kuyken of the University of Exeter said: "Anti-depressants are widely used by people who suffer
from depression and that's because they tend to work. But, while they're very effective in helping
reduce the symptoms of depression, when people come off them they are particularly vulnerable to
relapse. MBCT takes a different approach – it teaches people skills for life.
What we have shown is that when people work at it, these skills for life help keep people well."
Professor Kuyken continues: "Our results suggest MBCT may be a viable alternative for some of the
3.5 million people in the UK known to be suffering from this debilitating condition. People who
suffer depression have long asked for psychological approaches to help them recover in the
long-term and MBCT is a very promising approach. I think we have the basis for offering patients
and GPs an alternative to long-term anti-depressant medication. We are planning to conduct a larger
trial to put these results to the test and to examine how MBCT works." Depression Treatment:

iJournal of clinical oncology : official journal of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Vol.
23, No. 24. (20 August 2005), pp. 5746-5756./ibr /br /PURPOSE: Since chronic inflammation
contributes to tumorigenesis, we hypothesized that the risk and clinical outcome of bladder cancer
(BC) might be modulated by genetic variations in inflammation genes. METHODS: Using the TaqMan
method, we genotyped single nucleotide polymorphisms in interleukin (IL) -6 (-174 G-->C), IL-8
(-251 T-->A), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha; -308 G-->A), and peroxisome
proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG; Pro12Ala), and determined their associations with BC
initiation and clinical outcome. RESULTS: We found that the IL-6 variant genotype (C/C) was
associated with an increased BC risk (OR, 1.77; 95% CI, 1.25 to 2.51). There were joint effects
between the variant IL-6 genotypes and smoking status, and between the variant genotypes of IL-6
and other genes. To assess effect on recurrence, we grouped non-muscle-invasive BC patients
according to intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) treatment status: no BCG, induction BCG
(iBCG), and maintenance BCG (mBCG). In the Cox proportional hazards model, the variant IL-6
genotype was associated with an increased recurrence risk (hazard ratio [HR], 4.60; 95% CI, 1.24 to
17.09) in patients receiving mBCG. The variant PPARG genotype was associated with a reduced
recurrence risk (HR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.20 to 0.86) among untreated patients. In patients with
non-muscle-invasive BC, the variant IL-6 genotype was associated with an increased progression risk
(HR, 1.88; 95% CI, 0.80 to 4.11). In patients with invasive BC, variant IL-6 was associated with
improved 5-year overall and disease-specific survival (HR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.19 to 0.94 and HR, 0.39;
95% CI, 0.15 to 1.00, respectively). CONCLUSION: Inflammation gene polymorphisms are associated
with modified BC risk, treatment response, and survival.br /iD Leibovici, HB Grossman, CP Dinney,

width="1" height="1" //divpChatting on a hands-free phone is more distracting to drivers than a
conversation with a passenger, researchers have found. Drivers were more likely to drift out of
their lane and miss a right turning if they were using a hands-free set, than if they were talking
to someone sat in the car or not speaking at all, a study reveals. /ppThe finding builds on recent
work that suggests younger people's reactions become as slow as those of pensioners if they are
talking on a hands-free set while driving./ppDavid Strayer, at the University of Utah, used a
driving simulator to see how conversations affected people's driving./ppHe asked 41 men and women
to take part in 10-minute journeys during which they either chatted to a passenger, sat in silence
with them, or drove alone but took a call from a person on a hands-free set./ppDrivers had to
negotiate two-lane roads with traffic moving in both directions, a multi-lane motorway, and were
asked to take a specific exit to finish the test, according to the study in the Journal of
Experimental Psychology./pp"When there is a passenger in the car, almost everyone takes the exit,
but half the people talking on the cell phone fail to," said Strayer. "A driver conversing with a
passenger is not as impaired as a driver talking on a cell phone. You see bigger lane deviations
for someone talking on a cell phone compared with a driver talking to a passenger," he added.
/ppAnalysis of the drivers' conversations revealed that they used more simple speech, with fewer
syllables, when driving was more demanding. /ppThe finding was significant enough for the
researchers to urge people not to call drivers who would need to use a hands-free set to talk to
them. /ppThe risk of having an accident was greater if the driver was alone, the study found. "[If]
the passenger is in the vehicle and knows what the traffic conditions are like, they help the
driver by reminding them of where to take an exit and pointing out hazards," Strayer said./ppA
separate study commissioned by insurer RSA found that driving with a hangover is four times more
dangerous than getting behind the wheel sober. /ppA poor night's sleep, low blood sugar and
dehydration all affect the ability to drive safely, even if someone is within the drink-drive
limit, the study by Brunel University found. /ppStudents were tested on a driving simulator while
sober and again while suffering a hangover. The tests were compared and it was found that, on
average, hungover drivers drove almost 10mph faster, left their lane four times as often and
committed double the number of traffic violations./pp"What surprised us was that people were
driving faster. The fact they were driving more erratically we'd expect. Not taking care, going
through red lights, that's more alarming," Graham Johnston, an RSA director, said./pdiv

width="1" height="1" //divpThe notion that antioxidant supplements such as vitamins C and E could
slow ageing has been dealt a blow by a scientific study showing that the theory behind the advice
is wrong./ppBeloved of health food shops and glossy magazines alike, antioxidants have long been
peddled as preventative pills that have the ability to slow ageing and protect against diseases
such as cancer. But the research has shown that the molecular mechanism proposed to explain how
they work is mistaken./ppDavid Gems, at University College London, who led the study, said: "It
really demonstrates finally that trying to boost your antioxidant levels is very unlikely to have
any effect on ageing."/ppThe dominant theory for ageing has been around since the 1950s; it blames
glitches in cells caused by the damaging byproducts of our metabolism. As cells break down sugars
to release energy, they also unleash reactive forms of oxygen such as superoxide. These supposedly
cause the damage which is the hallmark of ageing./ppGems' team set about testing the theory that
raising or lowering the body's natural defences against superoxide could affect an individual's
lifespan: make the defences stronger, and lifespan should increase; make them weaker, and it should
decrease./ppAs it would be unethical to experiment on humans, his team used the nematode worm,
Caenorhabditis elegans. By tweaking its genes, the scientists were able to "tune" the worms'
natural defences - enzymes it produces to tackle superoxide. However, this made no difference to
the worms' lifespan. /pp"You can drastically change the natural defence levels and there's just no
effect on ageing," said Gems, who published his results yesterday in the journal Genes and
Development. He added that molecular damage was probably caused by numerous different chemicals
within the cell."With increasing lifespan comes greater exposure and vulnerability to the ageing
process," said Alan Schafer, head of molecular and physiological sciences at the Wellcome Trust.
"Research such as this points to how much we have to learn about ageing, and the importance of
understanding the mechanisms behind this process. This new study will encourage researchers to
explore new avenues in ageing research."/ppGems's findings coincide with a recent US study on the
effectiveness of antioxidants against cancer. The clinical trial on nearly 15,000 men tested
whether vitamin C and E supplements were effective against the disease. After following the
subjects for several years, researchers found no statistical difference in the number of cancers
between the groups taking the vitamins and those on a placebo./pdiv style="float: left;

iInternational Journal of Cancer, Vol. 117, No. 4. (2005), pp. 561-568./ibr /br /Absence of
estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) is the hallmark of most hormone-independent
breast cancers. Previous studies demonstrated that reactivation of PR expression in
hormone-independent MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells enabled progesterone to suppress cell growth
both in vitro and in vivo. We determined the whole genomic effect of progesterone in PR-transfected
MDA-MB-231 cells. We identified 151 progesterone-regulated genes with expression changes >
3-fold after 24 hr treatment. Most are novel progesterone target genes. Real-time RT-PCR analysis
of 55 genes showed a 100% confirmation rate. Twenty-six genes were regulated at both 3 and 24 hr.
Studies using translation inhibitor suggest that most of the 26 genes are primary progesterone
target genes. Progesterone consistently suppressed the expression of genes required for cell
proliferation and metastasis and increased the expression of many tumor-suppressor genes.
Progesterone also consistently decreased the expression of DNA repair and chromosome maintenance
genes, which may be part of the mechanism leading to cell cycle arrest. These data suggest
potential usefulness of progestin in combating ER-negative but PR-positive breast cancer and
indicate that progesterone can exert a strong anticancer effect in hormone-independent breast
cancer following PR reactivation. The identification of many novel progesterone target genes open
up new avenues for in-depth elucidation of progesterone-mediated molecular networks. © 2005

iInternational Journal of Cancer, Vol. 119, No. 11. (2006), pp. 2539-2545./ibr /br /Uncontrolled
cell proliferation is one of the hallmarks of cancer and the transition from the G1 to S phase is
the most commonly reported cell cycle abnormality in tumors. It has been shown that the oncogenic
activity of G1 cyclin E (CCNE) can be amplified by generating hyperactive low molecular weight
forms (LMW) through elastase-mediated proteolytic processing. Neutrophil elastase (NE) and
proteinase 3 (PR3) are 2 proteases that are aberrantly expressed in breast cancer cells and seem to
be involved in cell proliferation. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the expression of
these 2 proteases in addition to 2 potential intracellular targets of NE (CCNE1 and CCNE2) on
clinical outcome in a population of 205 primary breast cancer patients. By univariate analysis,
CCNE1, CCNE2, estrogen receptor and grade significantly predicted relapse free interval (RFI). NE
and PR3 did not achieve statistical significance. In a multivariate analysis, elevated CCNE2
[hazard ratio (HR) 2.10, p = 0.008] predicted shorter RFI. In subgroup analyses of the
tamoxifen-only treated patients, high CCNE1 levels predicted treatment resistance, while high
levels of CCNE2 were associated with poor RFI in untreated patients. Investigation of the
relationship between CCNE1, CCNE2 and NE did not show any impact on RFI. To conclude, this study
was the first to evaluate these markers at the mRNA level by RT-PCR in a series of primary breast
cancer patients, and our results confirmed the impact of high CCNE levels on clinical outcome in
systemically untreated and of CCNE1 in tamoxifen-only treated early breast cancer patients. ©
