Has anyone else tried setting up an encrypted drive?
Wow, what POS software comes with this thing!! It claims to be Leopard and Time Machine
compatible.
After installing "Freecom Hard Drive Pro" software, for which there is no updated version for OS X
since last year's version on the freecom.com support website:
- it enables the "backup" button on the HD, which, rather than triggering Time Machine, seems to
back up independently from TimeMachine. I stopped it as it was apparently copying stuff over to a
different location than Time Machine
- the only reason I bothered to install the software was to use encryption. After installing the
software, the manual instructs the user to press the "Encryption" button. This brings up: "you
don't have an encrypted partition set up yet" (good). Then click "Configure" / "Modify
Encryption":
"UNKNOWN EXCEPTION GETENCRYPTION" :eek:
From there it goes downhill!!
Freecom didn't notice this minor detail????????
Perhaps I am being too harsh and someone can come to my rescue with a good pointer? Please!!

am running OS X 10.4.11 on a "Santa Rosa" (Late 2007) MacBook. I bought it with 1GB of RAM. A few
weeks ago I purchased 4GB or RAM. I installed it correctly. I then upgraded to Leopard. I was
unsatisfied with the enormous RAM usage so I downgraded back to Tiger. The only thing I don't get
is in the Activity Monitor for Tiger it shows I only have 3GB of RAM. But when I go to
Appe>About This Mac, it says I have 4. In Leopard it also showed that I had 4GB RAM in the
Activity Monitor. So, how to I enable that last GB of RAM in my activity Monitor?

I have a unibody Macbook 2.4 with 4GB RAM, running the latest version of Leopard (10.5.5). In
activity monitor, I see each process has uses virtual memory of over half a gig, with a total VM
size of over 40GB. :eek: Is this normal? Is all this virtual memory eating space on my hard disk?
Why does each process require so much virtual memory? Is all the software on my Macbook,
bloatware?
The attachments show what I am saying. Do others also have similar VM statistics?

My situation. Two Apple computers, one iMac 2.8 Ghz and one MBP 2.16 Ghz, both with 10.5.5, an
Apple TV 160GB (with 2.3 software) and Airport Extreme (7.3.2 software). The AE is @ 5Ghz with
802.11n only (I got cordless speakers @ 2.4Ghz, so I chose the 5 Ghz for the AE)
I hooked the iMac to the AppleTV which is in the living room, next to the Airport Extreme.
Streaming HD-content on my AppleTV is surprisingly smooth (as it should be imho).
However, when I use AirTunes on AppleTV, after a few minutes the iMac gets disconnected from my AE,
leaving me without any internet connection and music from AirTunes. I have to 'disable' airport and
then 'enable' it again to get my internet connection working again. However, it will disconnect
again a few moments later. However, all the time this is happening, the WiFi internet connection on
my MBP and iPhone is working flawless.
This is driving me crazy, to say the least. Here's what I've done so far
- Used the MBP for streaming to airtunes: same problem as with the iMac. The internet connection
drops on my MBP, while on the iMac and iPhone, it's still working flawless
- Changed 5 Ghz to any available mode on the AE (802.11n with b/g; 2.4 Ghz).
- No wireless security
- No MAC-address security
- Reset the AE
- Shut down all the interfering appliances (such as my mobile phone and cordless speakers)
- Reinstalled OSX Leopard on my iMac (the MBP is a work-based machine and I refuse to reinstall it
for some airtunes problem).
- Reset the AppleTV
All without any luck. The internet connection dropped twice while writing this post and, like I
said, this is really driving me crazy. I haven't always had this problem, so I'm inclined to
believe this is a software problem. However, my software knowledge is quite limited: other than the
things I tried I have no clue what to do.
So any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to enumerate the contents of a directory. The code I use is this:
Code: int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) {
NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init];
NSFileManager *fm = [NSFileManager defaultManager];
NSString *fs2OpenDirectory =
[@"/Volumes/MECOS/GAMES/FreeSpace2/FS2_Open-20080717_trunk.app"
stringByDeletingLastPathComponent];
NSDirectoryEnumerator *dirEnum = [fm
enumeratorAtPath:fs2OpenDirectory];
NSString *file;
while (file = [dirEnum nextObject]){
[dirEnum skipDescendents];
//NSDictionary *fileAttr = [fm
fileAttributesAtPath:[fs2OpenDirectoryContents objectAtIndex:i] traverseLink:NO];
NSLog(file);
}
[pool drain];
return 0;

Hey guys,
Atm I am using Safari on my main user account and it works perfectly. I can go on to my other
account and use it perfectly. I want to be able to run the two at the same time on one user. I
found out how to do this:
/su (user)
-Prompts for password-
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOs/Safari
Until recently this has worked and I have been able to use both Safari's but now whenever I try it
comes up with an error message:

Any ideas how I can corrects this guys?
All help appreciated!

I'm currently porting a library of effects (depth of field, glow, HDR etc.) from Windows to Mac OS
and am looking to create floating point framebuffers in Cocoa. The documentation seems
straightforward and I've setup and validated a hardware accelerated pixel format as follows...
// ID of main display - running MBP mid-late 07 with 8600M GT GPU with Leopard 5.5
CGDirectDisplayID display = CGMainDisplayID();
GLuint attributes[] =
{
NSOpenGLPFAScreenMask, (NSOpenGLPixelFormatAttribute)CGDisplayIDToOpenGLDisplayMask(display),
NSOpenGLPFAWindow,
NSOpenGLPFANoRecovery,
NSOpenGLPFAAccelerated,
NSOpenGLPFADoubleBuffer,
NSOpenGLPFAColorFloat,
NSOpenGLPFAColorSize, (NSOpenGLPixelFormatAttribute)64,
NSOpenGLPFADepthSize, (NSOpenGLPixelFormatAttribute)24,
NSOpenGLPFAMinimumPolicy,
0
};
NSOpenGLPixelFormat *fmt = [[NSOpenGLPixelFormat alloc] initWithAttributes:
(NSOpenGLPixelFormatAttribute*)attributes];
if (fmt) {
printf("pixel format VALID!n");
// check details of returned pixel format
GLint noofVirtualScreens = [fmt numberOfVirtualScreens];
GLint colourFloatBuffer, colourSize, alphaSize;
[fmt getValues:&colourFloatBuffer forAttribute:NSOpenGLPFAColorFloat forVirtualScreen:0];
[fmt getValues:&colourSize forAttribute:NSOpenGLPFAColorSize forVirtualScreen:0];
[fmt getValues:&alphaSize forAttribute:NSOpenGLPFAAlphaSize forVirtualScreen:0];
printf("number of virtual screens = %dn", noofVirtualScreens);
printf("Colour Buffer = %dn", colourFloatBuffer); // 1=okay
printf("colour size = %dn", colourSize);
printf("alpha size = %dn", alphaSize);
[fmt autorelease];
}
else
{
printf("pixel format not valid!n");
}
I seem to get a valid pixel format with a 64 bit colour buffer setup okay. However, on rendering
into a subclass of NSView I get nothing at all - just a white b/ground as if the context is not
bound to the view. If I remove the NSOpenGLPFAColorFloat flag and set the colour size to 32 I get
output as normal.
Has anyone else tried using floating point buffers on the 8600M and run into similar problems? I'm
wondering if there are properies of the NSView that need to be changed?
Thanks in advance.

I've used Disk Utility to format a USB memory stick as FAT32 so I can swap it between my MBP and
various Windows boxes at work, but while Leopard has no problems using the stick and reports it as
being a FAT32 volume, it appears to the Windows machines as being unformatted.
I've done a bit of Googling and this does seem to be a known issue with Leopard. Certainly, I never
had this problem with Tiger.
I've got round it by simply formatting on a Windows PC, but just for reference, are there any known
Leopard-based fixes?

I've been having all sorts of problems lately on my Macbook Pro. Things are starting to slow down.
A restart doesn't fix it. I'm pissed off how Safari acts like it's running on the iPhone(before
firmware 2.2 that is). It crashes like every 30 minutes or something. Even when I'm scrolling
Macrumors.
Here's another thing. Whenever I click Restart from the apple menu, does nada. Only thing it closes
is my iTunes. Safari, Mail, iCal just sit there.
Then, I manually quit the app but I have to force-quit mail every single time. Even when I'm not
restarting. Mail works awesome and fetches my gmail and everything but it refuses to quit. I have
to force quit at least 3 times for it to actually quit.
So, I'm thinking to erasing everything and do a clean install of Leopard. But before doing that, I
wanted to ask if it is practical, because I have a lot of stuff on here so back up would take
hours.
I mean, do users who do a clean install experience that new fast feeling?
P.S. My hard disk space is about 65 GB out of 200. Not too bad right? I don't believe that is the
problem.
P.P.S: Running 10.5.5

Hi, all.
This is my first post, I recently bought a used MBA, I always want one when it first came out,
finally wait until now because of the big price drop:)
My first mod to my MBA is to upgrade the hard drive.
I wasn't pay much attention when I purchase this replacement hard disk, didn't notice the MBA only
takes 5mm height, as most 1.8" in the market are 8mm.
But since it's in my hand right now, I decided to put it on see if the MBA recognizes it.
Not too much surprise, leopard installation went very smoothly.
After the installation, the available space is about 95gb.
And because of the 5400rpm, it feels faster.
Too bad the bottom won't close because of the height of this drive.
But at least this gives me an idea, and I know there's a Toshiba 1.8" 120gb 4200rpm 5mm out there,
and it should fits perfectly in MBA.
Anyway, I'm still debating myself rather getting this Toshiba drive or a Samsung 32gb SSD(Same
drive as used in the Rev.A SSD version, but different capacity)
As the price of these two drives are pretty much the same (around $150 range)
I have another computer for my main work, so I'm toward getting a 32gb SSD:p
Here are some picture taken from the iphone.

I am trying to figure out what the best way is to create a bootable DVD frm a DMG file?
Upon first purchasing Leopard 10.5 way back when it came out, I decided to back up the disk on my
computer by creating a Disk Image. Turns out it was a good move because now that I need the disc,
it seems to have picked up a big scratch on it's surface, and it simply refuses to mount at this
point...
I can use either Toast or Disk Utility to accomplish this task (or the terminal if absolutely
necessary, but I would really prefer using one of the GUIs I've just mentioned). I was hoping
someone would be gracious enough to provide me with instructions on what would be the best way to
create a bootable DVD from this DMG file...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

So, I had to do an emergency install of Leopard, and now I'm trying to get iTunes to find the music
on my external hard drive.
I had stored my iTunes Music folder on the external drive before the new install. Now, when I point
my new iTunes to use this folder as the new library location, nothing happens.
Do I need to manually drag my huge collection back into iTunes?
Thanks!

viJournal Lite 2.0 viJournal Lite is a free lightweight version of viJournal. It's
designed as an analogue of the good old-fashioned page-a-day bound diary - the kind you buy in a
stationer's. You write your entries under dated headers and save them collectively by month and
year. viJournal has many powerful features, all added in such a way that they do not clutter the
interface or detract from the original purpose of having viJournal work like a traditional bound
diary. Features:
- Optional file encryption
- Two optional layers of password protection
- Parallel notepad
- Multiple journals
- Export to RTF, HTML, PDF, MS Word
WHAT'S NEW

I just bought a new Rev A. Macbook Air for my GF. I don't have it yet...
Currently she has a Powerbook 12" running Tiger.
She will want to do some very light file transfers. I don't see any real need to bother with
migration assistant. Tranferrring her music, bookmarks, and address book are no issue for me. She
barely has any apps worth transferring.
My only real concern is about mail, coming from Tiger to Leopard, and the fact that she uses a mix
of email sources...MobileMe, Gmail, etc.
Setting up the accounts is not a problem, but I'm wondering about the actual message files on her
Powerbook. After I set up her main user account on the MBA, can I just replace the mail folder in
her home folder with the mail folder from her Powerbook? Some of the messages are IMAP, and some
are POP accounts which she doesn't want to lose.
I did this very thing when I got a new desktop, but it was a Tiger - to - Tiger transfer, so I just
want to check if there are any issues doing this from Tiger to Leo.
Thanks.
