Karma/small/strong/embr //div br /Fisker Automotive has apparently decided that 260 hp and 260
lb-ft of torque should be plenty of power to recharge some batteries. Those 260 galloping ponies
will come courtesy of the General in the form of its 2.0L direct injected and turbocharged Ecotec
four banger, an engine that we've sampled ourselves plenty of times. We feel well qualified,
therefore, to suggest that this is an excellent motor, but it really sounds like a major case of
overkill for this particular application. Perhaps that's better than "underkill" (if such a word
actually existed) as that powerful engine ought to be able to recharge the Fisker Karma's on-board
lithium ion batteries at an extremely brisk pace. The faster the internal combustion engine can
charge up the battery pack, the quicker the car can revert back to its native electric-only
operation. Plus, that engine is a relatively light chunk of alloy, so the Karma's motor shouldn't
be burdened by the gasoline-fed boat anchor too horribly under electric power. br /br /We also find
it a bit interesting that Fisker chose GM as its powertrain supplier, which means that the Karma
and GM's own Chevy Volt are now even closer cousins than before. Both vehicles will sport four
doors, lithium ion batteries and an extended-range electric vehicle drivetrain; and with this
announcement, both are now slated to share a
href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/09/25/gm-officially-announces-flint-mi-production-for-volt-cruze-engin/"four
cylinder engines/a from GM. This kinda makes 'em second-cousins through marriage, no?br /br /div

pVolkswagen customers in the United States have been patiently awaiting the arrival of the new
sixth-generation Rabbit and its GTI performance variant. And while it's still a little ways off, at
least there's a light at the end of the tunnel as the German automaker has announced that the new
model will hit the U.S. market in early September 2009. European customers, meanwhile, already
began taking delivery of their new Golfs last month, with the GTI due to arrive there next
summer./p pAmerican versions will initially be available with the current 2.5-liter inline-five, a
new 2-liter turbodiesel in the TDI version and the GTI's 2-liter TSI. A new 1.8-liter TFSI is
expected to replace the base 2.5-liter unit, with 4Motion all-wheel-drive, TwinDrive hybrid and LPG
versions to follow, as well as a possible all-electric version and a replacement for the current
top-of-the-line R32 performance model. North American models will also come equipped with adaptive
cruise control, adaptive chassis control and 19-inch wheels as standard. Of the current
(fifth-generation) Rabbit, the GTI version accounted for roughly one third of models sold, which
Volkswagen expects to continue with this new generation. In the meantime, you can check out the
high-resolution images in the two galleries below./p pdiv class="postgallery"pstrongGallery: a

our high-res gallery/small/em/strong/div p /p p /p pEven as the industry swirls in turmoil, Porsche
continues to offer hope to enthusiasts as they relentlessly increase performance without
sacrificing efficiency. For 2009, Porsche has give the Boxster and Cayman a mild facelift, along
with updated the interior and accessories. More importantly, and following in the footsteps of the
a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/20/first-drive-2009-porsche-911-carrera-s-with-pdk/"911
Carrera PDK/a, all 2009 Cayman and Boxster models will also be offered with the
Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe transmission (aka PDK). Mated to the new transmission are two
significantly reworked engines featuring direct injection. The result is more power, and improved
fuel economy (we shouldn't fail to mention that the PDK accelerates faster than the six-speed
manual). Porsche is offering two engines in 2009. The standard engine is a 2.9-liter flat-six rated
at 255 hp. The "S" models are fitted with a more powerful 3.4-liter sending 310 hp to the gearbox.
Like the Carrera, go-fast options on the sporty mid-engine two-seaters include active suspension
(PASM) and ceramic brakes (PCCB). Look for both to arrive in showrooms in early 2009./p pdiv

Convertible/small/strong/embr //p pInfiniti did it. While most manufactures struggle to make their
convertibles even remotely as attractive as their coupe siblings, this luxury brand has delivered a
drop-top that looks every bit as good (or better) than its fixed-roof kin. In person, even with the
top up, the convertible is sleek as it lacks the heavy B-pillar of the coupe (giving it an airy
appearance). With its three-piece automatic power hardtop retracted, it screams sophistication and
luxury as all of the hardware disappears beneath a flush fitting tonneau cover. Aesthetics aside,
motivation for the new convertible comes from a 325-hp 3.7-liter V6 driving the rear wheels through
a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic. As expected in this segment, the G37 Convertible arrives
in the spring with a long list of standard equipment (see the press release after the jump). While
Infiniti hasn't released pricing, our best guess says the G37 Convertible will start in the
mid-40's./p div class="postgallery"pstrongGallery: a

Ford Fusion/small/strong/embr //div p /p p /p pFord pulled the silk sheets off the 2010 Ford Fusion
and Fusion Hybrid this afternoon. Sporting new front and rear fascias, an updated interior, and
four engine choices, the mid-size Fusion is a direct shot across the bow of the Toyota Camry and
Honda Accord. In fact, in nearly every engine combination, Ford boasts that their Fusion offers
faster acceleration and better fuel economy than its Japanese rivals (plus, the automaker is quick
to point out, the 2010 Fusion is available in both FWD and AWD configurations). Ford is offering
the Fusion with three fuel-efficient gasoline engines: Duratec 2.5-liter I4, Duratec 3.0-liter V6,
and the 3.5-liter V6 Duratec bumped to 240 hp for 2010. The hybrid model features a 2.5-liter
four-cylinder engine mated to an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission
(e-CVT). According to Ford, the combo offers a bladder-busting 700-mile range in the city cycle.
Expect the Fusion twins to roll (efficiently, of course) into showrooms in spring 2009. /p pdiv

/Mazda has unveiled its 2010 Mazda3 sedan here at the a
href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/"LA Auto Show/a and we managed to snap some
nice shots off as it was spinning around on a huge rotating stand. It's a good looking car that
Mazda says carries on its "family face" with stylish bulges and creases that attract the eyes, and
we're really looking forward to seeing the hatchback version as well. Underhood is a newly-enlarged
2.5-liter version of Mazda's MZR inline-four that offers up 167-horsepower and can be mated to
either a 6-speed stick or 5-speed auto. As before, a standard 148-horsepower 2.0L four will be
available and can be had with either a manual or auto tranny with 5 forward ratios each. br /br
/Considering the low price class in which the Mazda3 competes, features like dual-zone automatic
climate control, Xenon self-leveling head lamps, push-button start and hands-free Bluetooth are
very nice touches, as is the iPod integration and an optional leather interior. Increasingly
important these days is fuel mileage, so the 3's low .29 coefficient of drag is an important piece
of the overall efficiency puzzle and helps the 2010 Mazda3 hit 33 mpg on the highway with the
smaller engine option. See the full press release past the break for all the details and be sure to
check out our live shots below.br /br /div class="postgallery"pstrongGallery: a

href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/12/bentley-azure-t-to-debut-in-l-a/"Bentley Azure T/a sits on
its raised, hardwood decking like it's about to dance with the stars. At 18 feet and 5,700 pounds,
it probably won't be pulling any Thriller moves, but we bet it could do a mean tango. The lowered
stance and larger wheels make the car gentlemanly mean, and the 6 3/4-liter engine is good for 500
hp and 738 lb-ft. and a 176 mph top-down speed for your hair's pleasure. We could tell you how much
it costs, but there are far more interesting things to talk about. Frankly, all you need to know
is, as AB'er Alex Nunez wrote: "It comes with everything. Bring money. "/p pdiv
