height="199" /Now that the majority of our media has made its way to the digital realm, we've seen
a proliferation of media center applications designed to integrate all of that media into one
central, easy to use application you can control from both your computer and your TV. Between the
various spinoffs of Xbox Media Center, Vista's DVR-sporting Media Center, and various other
excellent solutions, you've got more choices than ever for managing and accessing your digital
media. For this week's Hive Five, we want to hear about the media center you love best. Keep
reading for voting details, then nominate the application you favor in the comments./p pHive Five
nominations take place in the comments, where you post your favorite tool for the job. We get
hundreds of comments, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your
comment like so: bcodeVOTE: Media Center Application Goes Here/code/b. emNEW RULE/em: Please don't
include your vote in a reply to another commenter. Instead, make your vote and reply separate
comments. If you don't follow this format, we may not count your vote. To prevent tampering with
the results, votes from first-time commenters may not be counted. After you've made your
nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition./p piAbout the Hive Five/i:
The a href="http://lifehacker.com/tag/hive-five/"Hive Five/a feature series asks readers to answer
the most frequently asked question we get—"Which tool is the best?" Once a week
we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU
tell us your favorite tools to get the job done. Every weekend, we'll report back with the top five
recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last

Oh, that Boxee lot is a crafty bunch. The open-source media
center today added Netflix capabilities, allowing you to
browse the titles available for streaming, manage your Watch Instantly queue and stream movies
directly to your TV.
The new functionality was built using the Netflix
APIs and is part of a new alpha version of Boxee. One nice bonus is that unlike other Netflix
services such as the Roku and Xbox, Boxee lets you browse and add streaming titles directly from
the TV. There’s no need to separately fill your queue on a computer.
However, the Netflix feature only lets you browse and manage streaming titles, not the regular
DVD-by-mail ones. And in Boxee’s ongoing it-works-now-it-doesn’t-now-it’s-back
tug-of-war with Apple, the Netflix function does not currently run on the Apple TV hardware. A
spokesperson for the company says getting Netflix up and running on the Apple TV this is their
top priority.
In addition to Netflix, this Boxee update also includes access to new content from TheWB.com and new interfaces for
CNN, Hulu
and YouTube content. Additionally, the service now links music videos from MTVMusic.com to match artists and songs in your audio library.
Adding Netflix should provide a nice new incentive for people to try out the service, but
it’s still too technical for mainstream adoption. Granted, it’s still only in alpha,
so that can be forgiven. The company just raised $4 million, now it needs to get built
into some consumer hardware to see if it can take off.

use to watch tv that has digital output that I'd like to take advantage of. However as far as I'm
aware not all of the x-fi's support digital input, and since I'm limited to pci right now (my last
1x pcie slot is snugged right next to my video card, even though my video card is a single-slot
it's too close for comfort)
So from my understanding I would need to go to the X-Fi XtremeGamer
Fatal1ty to get the proper input (even though I'd rather not pay for something with that
jock-wannabee's name on it) or is there any other option?
Would I need to buy that $15 I/o module to get the input that I need or is there some other option?
And i guess lastly, does vista media center even support doing such a thing(taking audio from
digital input for tv)? :)
thanks!

Hi all,
For my home network I have an airport express. This works great for our needs, except for one.
I use EyeTV/elgato tuner/powerbook as my DVR/home media center. I recently set up a second "hub"
using a Powermac in another room. With EyeTV there is the option to share your video library with
other computers on the network. However, the video files are just too large to stream over the
wireless network in real time, and the movies are horribly jumpy. In addition, my powermac's
airport card died so I no longer have the option of using wireless for it.
I want to keep the wireless network as it is, but hardwire the MacPro to the Powerbook (with I
assume an ethernet cable). Also, it seems to me that both machines need to join the current
(wireless) network such that I am able to share between them on EyeTV.
[u]So my questions are:[u]First, is it possible to just run an ethernet cable between the two
machines to share data without any further setup? Second, if that is possible, will the powermac
then be able to join the home 'wireless' network? If not, can the powerbook simultaneously be on
the wireless network and on a ethernet network with the powermac?
Thanks so much for helping a noob,
Cameron

Asus has announced enhanced versions of its Eee Box "nettop" computer. Targeting home-theater
applications, the B204 and B206 include HDMI outputs, as well as discrete graphics circuitry from
ATI, and could prove popular for Linux media center distributions like Boxee, MythTV, SageTV, Linux
MCE, and others.

Hello All, so I gave my father my old g4 (ahh classic) and now he's hooked on mac..Especially with
his itunes and his new ipod...now Id like to get him a media extender to hook up to his living room
receiver. Does anyone have any media center extender suggestions aside from the appleTV that work
with the mac? I know D-Link and Linkysys have media center extenders but they are only compatible
with PC/vista's media center. Thanks in advance everyone. Happy Holidays.
