In-Ear Headphones/a have been redesigned from the ground up with balanced audio powered by two

Verdict:/strong After a history of offering lackluster earbuds, Apple has come through with a
product that sounds really good and is reasonably priced, all things considered. The balanced sound
and dual drivers makes all the difference in the quality factor. While not necessarily thumpy, the
bass has a nice resonance without drowning out many of the high end intricacies found in jazz or
electronic music. The midrange audio is relatively flat and doesn't overpower your ears, which is
nice because it allows the high end noises to really stand out, letting you hear things you don't
get from your car or computer speakers./p pTo see how they stacked up in the headphone scheme of
things, I tested them against a pair of standard iPod headphones, the premium Zune headphones, and

battlemodo/a./p pbull; Unsurprisingly, the Apple In-Ears outclassed the normal iPod earphones in
every category, providing superior sound and comfort./p pbull; The Zune Premium Headphones v2,
which are very good for only costing $30-$40, had bass that was a bit punchier, but could not
compete against the mids and highs of the Apple In-Ears. If you really like bass or a lower price,
you might favor the Zune headphones, which more than get the job done. But on sound quality alone,
the Apple In-Ear headphones are superior./p pbull; Compared to the Shure SE110s, the Apple In-Ear
headphones don't quite match up. It's not a stark difference between the two, but the SE110s are
superior in almost every category, from bass, to high end clarity. Part of that is because the
Apple In-Ears don't have the noise isolation capability, and partly because they're just not quite
as good. And though theyre $40 cheaper than the SE110s MSRP, you can find the SE110s at some online
outlets as low as $75./p pAs far as remote capabilities go, I tested the Apple In-ear headphones
with an iPhone 3G and a first gen iPod touch (neither of which are officially supported. As Apple
claims, the audio works fine with both devices. Neither the remote or the mic work with the iPod
touch 1G at all, merely reducing it to a pair of headphones. On the iPhone 3G, you can't use the
volume, or track changing controls. The remote can only play/pause a song, answer/end a call and
make use of the microphone. But all of those work perfectly fine on the iPhone./p pOverall, the
Apple In-Ear Headphones are a quality product at a fairly reasonable price. They sound great, and
work as expected. That said, unless you really need a remote on your headphones (or just want to
show the world you're a card-carrying member of the Cult of Apple), there are still a couple of
better values out there. Still, Apple's latest headphone offering is not a bad choice. [a

today's Senate hearings of the Detroit 3 automakers, U.S. Senator Robert Bennett (R-Utah) spent
much of his time on the mic talking about the cost savings that would be realized if General Motors
and Chrysler LLC merged. He argued that prior talks held between the two companies has already laid
the groundwork for a merger and that estimates peg annual cost savings at $8-10 billion for the
combined company. Bennett then remarked that one reason a GM/Chrysler merger didn't happen the
first time around was because many people in upper management, possibly including one of the two
CEOs sitting before him, would basically lose their jobs. When asked if he would still want
government assistance if Congress made the merger of GM and Chrysler a condition, Nardelli
responded, "The first job that would go would be mine, but if in fact that's the criteria that
means we would get money to save Chrysler and the people who have worked there for 80 some years, I
would do it." Wow. br /br /Of course, we're fairly certain Mr. Nardelli has a decently sized nest
egg to fall back on, and we'd jump at the offer to make a graceful exit if we were the CEO of
Chrysler, too. Nevertheless, Nardelli's comment came off as sincere and was commended by Senator
Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) who is chairing the hearings.br /br /[Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty]p

I just picked up the Griffin Tuneflex Aux for my truck. I found that it is not necessarily made for
the iPhone but it works just the same. I did choos this one over the Kensington Liquid Aux Deluxe.
What I am looking for is something that will hold my iPhone like these two products but will let me
use the phone feature also (as a hands free option). It would seem that there should be a product
that could route audio from the calls through the speakers as with the itunes audio and use the
built in mic to converse through. I do not necessarily want to use blue tooth for the phone. The
bluetooth issue brings up another point. If I stay with the above poducts and get a buetooth
hardwire kit, can I still use the phone feature while still in the dock of these products.

Some people have a hard time taking Apple's earphones seriously. Consider the company's past forays
into listening accessories: several generations of low-end iPod Earphones and Lanyard Headphones, a
pair of $39 In-Ear Headphones that were derided for lousy fit, and the infamous iPod Hi-Fi, an
overpriced all-in-one speaker. Could this company really make a pair of premium earphones worth
owning?...

We've been wanting to get some extended face time with Apple's In-Ear Headphones (yes, that's the
product name) ever since we spied them at the company's Fall " Let's Rock" event. Of course, they didn't exactly hit
the scene on
time, and we were starting to get suspicious. Tack on the rumor they wouldn't be compatible
with iPhones, and we felt downright indignant. Imagine our surprise, then, at the discovery that
they not only sound really, really good (warm lows and crisp highs, a distinct lack of
that modern, pushy mid-range), but they do work with the iPhone (the 3G we've got here, at
least). Regular playback is a charm, and we had no problem making and receiving calls with the buds
and attached mic -- though strangely the remote doesn't seem operable on the phone, thus deflating
our excitement ever-so-slightly. Regardless, the sound quality is pretty boss for the price
(besting other, more expensive models we've checked out), and they're a huge step up from Apple's
previous offerings. Check out some looks at the beauties in the gallery below.

width="1" height="1" //divpThe Conservative party is making more than 10% of its staff at party
headquarters redundant as a direct result of the economic downturn, guardian.co.uk can
reveal./ppThe casualties include members of the party's policy section, which provides research and
ideas for the next general election manifesto./ppThe decision follows a slackening off in donations
as the global financial crisis bites. Some 24 staff at the party's Millbank headquarters were told
on Monday that they could be made redundant. /ppIn a separate move the party is also closing the
arm's-length Constituency Campaigning Services – based in Coleshill Manor, in
the West Midlands – which provides campaigning material and acts as a call
centre for constituency parties. Some 40 people there have been declared redundant./ppThe two
divisions bearing the brunt of the redundancies in London are the party's external affairs and
policy units, which are in effect being run down. A third division, the party's business relations
department, was also facing closure, but sources say the department has been saved by a big Tory
donor, Alan Lewis, chair of the Hartley Investment Trust and a former treasurer of the party, who
agreed to bankroll all the staff. /ppThis department has links with two key Tory organisations,
Conservative City Circle and Conservative City Future, and has strong links with the City of
London. /ppIt is chaired by the MP Richard Spring, the vice chair of the party with special
responsibility for business and entrepreneurship, and advises George Osborne, the shadow
chancellor, on small business issues./ppThe decision to slim down the policy section some 17 months
before the last date of an election is a surprise. The section writes and researches draft policy
for the party – and works closely with Oliver Letwin, the former shadow
chancellor appointed by David Cameron to head the party's policy review. /ppThe West Dorset MP is
also, alongside Cameron, a former member of the party's policy unit, after working closely with
Margaret Thatcher. /ppThe external affairs department is run by George Eustace, David Cameron's
former press secretary, and liaised with Christian and Muslim groups and local party associations.
Sources said yesterday that Eustace was not one of the people to be sacked./ppMost of the staff
facing the sack are footsoldiers, brought in to strengthen the party's work to win the next general
election. /ppNone of the highly paid big hitters, including former News of the World editor Andy
Coulson, the party's director of communications and planning, and marketing guru Steve Hilton, the
director of strategy who is still helping the leader while working from California, are affected.
/ppNor is the party's communications directorate or any of the departments bankrolled by Lord
Ashcroft, the deputy chairman of the party, including the campaigning section./ppThe changes have
been initiated by Andrew Feldman, the new chief executive of the Tory party, with the backing of
Giles Inglis-Jones, the party's head of human resources. /ppThe closure of CCS, funded by
millionaire Tory donors, comes after the political funding watchdog the Electoral Commission
cleared the organisation of being controlled by the Conservative party. Registered as a body
independent of the Tories, it has received nearly £2m in donations since 2004, mainly from
the Midlands Industrial Council, a Tory funding body, whose members include Robert Edmiston, a car
importer and property developer. /ppIt had been under investigation for two years by the Electoral
Commission after the Labour party complained that it was really part of the Conservative party and
was subsidising campaigning in marginal seats by millions of pounds. /ppThe Electoral Commission
did a U-turn in the middle of the investigation. Its initial findings, sent to David Wall, chair of
both the CCS board and of its main donor, the MIC, said the commission believed the centre was
"heavily subsidised"./ppLisa Klein, the director of party and election finance at the Electoral
Commission, says in the letter (seen by the Guardian): "There may have been under-reporting of
donations and election expenses by candidates, agents and the Conservative party accounting units
who have benefited from the subsidised rates. These potential breaches are of concern to the
commission, as the rules on donation reporting are fundamental to the transparency of party and
election finance in the UK."/ppA Conservative party spokesman said: "The Conservative party was in
discussion with the Electoral Commission in early 2008. These were clearly initial views prior to
full information being provided and before a full investigation had been completed. The Electoral
Commission has since concluded that CCS's charged rates were comparable to commercial rates. On
this basis there is no evidence that donations should have been declared by the party and the
commission decided to take no further action."/ppHe said: "Ahead of elections next year the
Conservative party will be setting up an in-house campaign centre, which will coordinate the
party's campaigning work across the West Midlands."/pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px;

pstrong1984:/strong Poison gas leaks from a Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal, India. It
spreads throughout the city, killing thousands of people outright and thousands more subsequently
in a disaster often described as the worst industrial accident in history./p pUnion Carbide chose
Bhopal, a city of 900,000 people in the state of Madhya Pradesh, because of its central location
and its proximity to a lake and to the country's vast rail system./p pThe plant opened in 1969 and
produced the pesticide carbaryl, which was marketed as Sevin. Ten years later the plant began
manufacturing a href="http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/hlthef/methylis.html"methyl isocyanate/a, or MIC,
a cheaper but more toxic substance used in the making of pesticides./p pIt was MIC gas that was
released when water leaked into one of the storage tanks late on the night of Dec. 2, a
href="http://www.bhopal.org/whathappened.html"setting off the disaster/a. Gas began escaping from
Tank 610 around 10:30 p.m. although the main warning siren didn't go off for another two hours./p
pThe first effects were felt almost immediately in the vicinity of the plant. As the gas cloud
spread into Bhopal proper, residents were awakened to a blinding, vomiting, lung-searing hell.
Panic ensued and hundreds of people died in the chaotic stampede that followed./p pAn exact death
toll has never been established. Union Carbide, not surprisingly, set the toll on the low end at
3,800, while municipal workers claimed to have cleared at least 15,000 bodies in the immediate
aftermath of the accident. Thousands have died since and an estimated 50,000 people became invalids
or developed chronic respiratory conditions as a result of being poisoned./p pRegardless of the
numbers, all a href="http://www.american.edu/ted/bhopal.htm"evidence pointed to Union Carbide/a and
its Indian subsidiary, as well as the Indian government, its partner in the factory, being
responsible, mainly through negligence, for what occurred. Despite the extreme volatility and
toxicity of the chemicals in use at the factory, safeguards known to be substandard were ignored
rather than fixed./p pIn the subsequent investigations and legal proceedings, it was determined,
among other things, that:/p ul class="list1" lipStaffing at the plant had been cut to save money.
Workers who complained about codified safety violations were reprimanded, and occasionally
fired./p/li lipNo plan existed for coping with a disaster of this magnitude./li/p lipTank alarms
that would have alerted personnel to the leak hadn't functioned for at least four years./li/p
lipOther backup systems were either not functioning or nonexistent./li/p lipThe plant was equipped
with a single back-up system, unlike the four-stage system typically found in American plants./li/p
lipTank 610 held 42 tons of MIC, well above the prescribed capacity. (It is believed that 27 tons
escaped in the leak.)/li/p lipWater sprays designed to dilute escaping gas were poorly installed
and proved ineffective./li/p lipDamage known to exist, such as to piping and valves, had not been
repaired or replaced because the cost was considered too high. Warnings from U.S. and Indian
experts about other shortcomings at the plant were similarly ignored./li/p /ul pThe aftermath of
the disaster was almost as chaotic. Union Carbide was a
href="http://www.bhopal.com/ucs.htm"initially responsive/a, rushing aid and money to Bhopal.
Nevertheless, faced with a $3 billion lawsuit, the company dug in, eventually agreeing to a $470
million settlement, a mere 15 percent of the original claim. In any case, very little money ever
reached the victims of the disaster./p pa
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Anderson_(chairman)"Warren Anderson/a, Union Carbide's
CEO, went before Congress in December 1984, pledging his company's renewed commitment to safety, a
promise that rang hollow in India (and probably to Congress as well)./p pAnderson was subsequently
charged with manslaughter by Indian prosecutors but managed to evade an international arrest
warrant and disappeared. Investigators from Greenpeace, which has kept up an active interest in the
case, found Anderson in 2002, alive and well and living comfortably in the Hamptons. The United
States has shown no inclination to hand him over to Indian justice, and most of the serious charges
against him have been dropped./p pUnion Carbide, meanwhile, was acquired by the Dow Corporation in
2001, which refused to assume any additional liability for Bhopal, arguing that the debt had
already been paid through various court settlements. It did go on to settle another outstanding
claim against Union Carbide, this one for $2.2 billion made by asbestos workers in Texas./p pA few
outstanding legal claims from Bhopal remain to be settled, both in India and the United States, but
most of the court wrangling is over./p pThe victims of the disaster, those who live on, continue
dealing with various health problems — including chronic respiratory problems,
vision problems and an increased incidence of cancer and birth defects — and an
environment that remains contaminated to this day./p pemSource: Various/em/pbr style="clear:
