Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films screening at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival
in the out-of-competition sections of Premieres, Spectrum, New Frontier, and Park City at Midnight.
Celebrating its 25th year, the 2009 Sundance Film Festival runs January 15-25 in Park City, Salt
Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah.

Cinematical -

Yesterday we shared with you the
competition slate for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, which, depending on the paper you read,
was full of the dark and disturbing or the sad and melodramatic. Good to know we'll be smiling in
the cold mountains of Utah come January. Today, the Sundance Institute has announced their
non-competition films; this includes the Premieres section, which is usually full of studio flicks
-- stuff that's set to debut in theaters the following month or so, and films that feature big
stars; the big guns. Then we have the Spectrum section (with 16 dramatic films and seven docs), the
Midnight section (eight films), and the Frontier section (six films).
Among the ones that stand out to me at first glance are:
-
I Love You Philip
Morris (Premiere), with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor playing prison lovers.
-
Adventureland
- The director of Superbad follows that flick up with a comedy set in a theme park.
-
The Informers (Premiere),
based on the popular Bret Easton Ellis novel, and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger,
Winona Ryder and Mickey Rourke.
-
Moon (Premiere), which is that freaky space
flick starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey.
-
Manure (Premiere), starring Billy Bob
Thornton as a manure salesman.
-
Spread, starring Ashton Kitcher as a guy who
seduces older women. (Wonder if he's right for that role?)
-
Helen ( Spectrum), starring Ashley Judd as a
psychiatrist who fights her own depression.
-
The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle
(Spectrum) -- I just love that title.
-
Spring Breakdown (Midnight), starring Rachel
Dratch, Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, Will Arnett, Rachel Hamilton.
As we do every year, Cinematical will be on the ground in Park City, Utah bringing you
reviews, interviews and enough Sundance flavor to send a brisk mountain chill through your soul.
Check out the full non-competition slate (with descriptions) after the jump.

music tapping, and most importantly, more Daft Punk./p pAfter initially a

Apple's SDK restrictions/a (not allowing access to a user's own iPod tracks, like in the jailbreak
version of old), developers Tapulous have hit a nerve with Tap Tap Revenge, which is now released
weekly with new songs from big-label artists like Q-Tip and NIN./p pTap Tap Dance, as its name
would suggest, focuses more on the electro bangers, which suits the tapping just fine. More
importantly, though, the game is based on an all-new OpenGL-based platform that allows for more
variety not just in crazy background graphics, but in changing the layout of the tapping tracks
themselves which is a nice switch up in game play. Tapulous CEO Bart Decrem says that the platform
also allows for embedded video for even more craziness in the background eventually and interactive
music videos of sorts./p pAdding embedded video and more craziness might lead to slowdowns, which
in a rhythm game is a no-no. The version we played can get a little jerky at times, but on the
whole is smooth and looks great. Tap Tap Dance is $5, but the free version will continue to receive
its weekly updates and new tracks, and will eventually be ported over to the new Open GL framework
itself next year./p pobject width="640" height="361"param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" param

Teague's AMC Gremlin/small/strong/embr //div br /Jeff Teague is the son of former AMC design chief
Dick Teague, and his father's work at the scrappy independent automaker created some of the most
memorable designs ever. Jeff Teague is a designer himself, and not too long ago his a
href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/13/rendered-speculation-the-return-of-the-amx/"reimagining of
the AMX/a musclecar caught our eye. That exercise left Teague so inspired that he fleshed out what
a modern-day Gremlin might look like. Being fond of the original helps us like this new take on the
car, even if it's pretty far removed looks-wise. We like that it's not blatantly retro; the only
real concession to the past is the C-Pillar shape, and hey, the Infiniti FX already swiped that.
The proportions and overall look bring to mind several current vehicles from other manufacturers,
making us think that the Gremlin was about 35 years ahead of its time. br /br /div

The person I work with for print layout and graphics misunderstood a midnight deadline for an
ad--and I think I will be okay if I can pull something together by morning. I don't have (or know)
PageMaker so I thought I'd try working in Pages, which I have successfully used the templates from
in the past. I am not very experienced with something as specific as a 3 5/8" w X 10" h no bleed
request. I have tried margins in the Inspector but can't figure out the easiest way to start with
these boundaries. I will be fine if I can get my "frame." Can anyone help? Thanks!

-Daily. Gay. News.- Towleroad: a premium site for modern gay men. -
1 days and 12 hours ago
The Salt Lake Tribune reports:
"Police say a 50-year-old man was critically injured in an attack with a bottle outside a
Salt Lake City bar and gym that reputedly caters to the gay community -- and that may make it a
possible hate crime case. The victim told police that he left the 14th Street Gym, near 1400 West
and 200 South, after midnight early Wednesday. As he was waiting for a cab ride, the man said
someone walked up behind him, swore at him, used a derogatory sexual-orientation slur and hit him
over the top of the head with a bottle, police said. The suspect then ran off. The victim, who
police said showed signs of intoxication, did not get a good description of his attacker. The
victim suffered cuts to his forehead and was 'bleeding profusely,' police said. He was
transported to an area hospital in critical condition."
The Deseret News files
the same report, adding: "In April, the Utah Court of Appeals reversed a district court's
order revoking the gym's license based on reported lewd acts committed by gym patrons. The court
ruled there was no evidence that the gym or its employees knew of or condoned the acts being
alleged."
Interesting that the Mormon-owned newspaper tries to tie the potentially anti-gay attack to lewd
behavior...

directing a kids movie. With their emotionally detached harmonies and homemade wall of sound, the
Danish duo famously have their minds in the gutter, singing about illicit sex, cheap drugs, and
dead lovers over 1950s guitar stomps and 60s-style production. Not exactly merrymaking. But "Come
On Santa", from the EP emWishing You a Rave Christmas/em, is neither the Dirty Noel nor a holiday
cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners, but actually a sincere plea for a white Christmas. "Come on,
Santa," Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo sing over a minor-key bells theme and a little drum machine
boy rhythm, "bring me snow on Christmas." Oh wait. I just got that./p pMoving on. There's also a
nice little section about the birth of Baby Jesus: "They you give to me the greatest gift of all,
your love to me tonight, and then I feel okay." Just got that too. Damn the Raveonettes and their
double entendres. Guess it's another back-alley Christmas, but the lights and | |
