width="1" height="1" //divpLike Slade and spice-"enhanced" liqueurs, leopard print is one of those
things that for 364 days of the year is obviously an assault on the senses, but, come Christmas, is
perceived as "jolly", "festive" and "a bit of fun". "A sensible but chic cover-up for a Christmas
party," as one current fashion magazine would have it. (Perhaps I should add that such advice is
aimed only at the female of the species. Not even Christmas can stop leopard print turning a man
into anything other than Jonathan Ross.)/ppPerhaps it is the association between Christmas and soap
operas that explains why dressing like Bet Lynch to mark the birth of the Messiah suddenly makes
perfect sense. True, Christmas is not known for subtlety on any level, from the food, to TV
schedules to the fondness for tinsel and sequins. But dressing like something in a David
Attenborough documentary does not make you look like animalistic sexuality unleashed. It does not
even make you look like a 60s wannabe starlet (and that comment is directed at yoo-hoo, Madame Kate
Moss). It makes you look like a half-cut barmaid, desperately hoping for a bit of mistletoe. And as
everyone knows, no one from a soap opera has a happy ending at Christmas./pdiv style="float: left;

width="1" height="1" //divpBarack Obama's epochal victory in the US presidential election may have
transfixed and gladdened the world but the British public, it seems, is more preoccupied with the
life and times of another American colossus - a 26-year-old singer by the name of Britney Jean
Spears./ppDespite, or perhaps because, she has endured yet another turbulent year, Spears has
topped a list of the UK's 10 most searched-for subjects on Yahoo./ppThe huge appetite for
information on Big Brother and The X Factor pushed them into second and third place on the search
list, while the US election had to make do with the seventh spot, sandwiched between High School
Musical 3 and Amy Winehouse. Oasis, who released their seventh studio album, Dig Out Your Soul,
last month, came in at number four. Kate Moss, whom the sculptor Marc Quinn immortalised in a
pound;1.5m gold statue displayed in the British Museum, claimed ninth place, just ahead of
EastEnders./ppAlso on the most-searched list was Heath Ledger, who died in New York in January. The
Australian star of the latest Batman film was placed eighth. His performance as the psychopathic
Joker in The Dark Knight generated speculation that he may win a posthumous Oscar next year./ppA
spokesman for Yahoo Europe said: "It is fascinating to look back over the last year and see the
stories, personalities and subjects that have captured our imagination ... some of which continue
to be the hot topics of today."/ppSpears has crammed a remarkable amount into the past 12 months.
As well as facing trial for driving without a valid Californian licence, having her father granted
indefinite control of her assets and spending two days in a psychiatric ward, the singer has
managed to confound many by launching a comeback. /ppLast week she was named best international pop
star at an awards ceremony in Germany. On Saturday, the singer made her first UK television
appearance for four years when she sang her new single, Womanizer, on The X Factor. Her performance
brought in the highest ratings for the show, attracting a peak of 12.8 million viewers. Today sees
the launch of her sixth studio album, Circus./pp"I've been through a lot and there's a lot that
people don't know," she told MTV this year. "I look back and [think]: 'I'm a smart person. What the
hell was I thinking?'"/ppDespite her impressive showing in the list, however, Spears' new record
has not captivated all the critics. "Circus isn't bad as pop albums go," wrote the Guardian's
Alexis Petridis. "But ... it's less edgy and exciting than its predecessor."/pdiv style="float:

width="1" height="1" //divpWhen Herbert Ypma's first a href="http://www.hiphotels.com"Hip Hotel/a
guide arrived on the scene in 1999, all glossy photos of fabulous looking hotels, it was seen as
heralding a new era for hospitality. The death knell was sounded for nylon bedspreads and doilies
and the kind of mediocre and dated establishments in which Britain seemed to specialise. /ppAnd
quite rightly so. But in the intervening years, it seems our definition of what constitutes a good
hotel is in danger of becoming somewhat formulaic: a splash of Farrow Ball paint in a tastefully
neutral shade, a big bed decked in white linen, a plasma TV and, hey presto, it's a hip hotel.
/ppIn their own way, some of these places are just as bad as the dodgy old guesthouses they
replaced. I shudder to recall one "designer" BB in Brighton where the rooms were somewhat
self-consciously named after the paint scheme ("pebble", "moss", "buttermilk"), but where breakfast
consisted of a dry croissant and orange juice, because "our guests don't want a cooked breakfast in
the morning". A weekend by the seaside and no fry-up? I left feeling cheated. Or another hotel in
Norfolk where every concession to style and comfort had been made, apart from the small matter of
curtains – there were none. Chintz has become a byword for naff, old-fashioned
and bad, but I don't mind a bit of chintz, especially when I'm staying in the country. /ppMaybe
it's time for a backlash. A renaissance for the a
href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/nov/30/unhip-hotels-guide"unsung heroes/a of the
hospitality world. The BB owners who haven't just left a high-flying career in London to live out
their country dreams but who have been slogging away at it for years and know exactly what it is
that makes guests feel at home (clue: it's not jelly babies in the mini bar or self-consciously
kitsch rubber ducks in the bathtub). The kind of places that wouldn't necessarily look good on the
pages of a coffee table book, but which certainly feel good to stay in. Places like the a
href="http://www.walpolebayhotel.co.uk/"Walpole Bay Hotel/a in Margate, an Edwardian seaside hotel
where you can browse guestbook entries dating back to the 1930s and the owner Jane Bishop will
offer you a hot water bottle to take up to your room if it's chilly. Or the a
herf="http://www.pyg.co.uk/"Pen-y-Gwryd/a, a historic inn in Snowdonia, which is like a timewarp
(there's a gong for dinner and napkins in napkin rings) but in a good way. It's time we began to
celebrate these one-offs before they, too, get the boutique makeover./ppHave you got a favourite
