one of the weaker songs on a href="/article/record_review/46899-american-gangster"strongemAmerican
Gangster/em/strong/a, and not just because of a lazy Lil Wayne guest verse; West already has a "Go

black hoodie rap," Jay begins, not "black superhero music". Still, West has crafted a percussive,
slickly cinematic backing track, and Jay sounds awesomely slippery, raising his voice to the
squeaking point at times and even playing with a Caribbean accent en route to an emAnnie/em
reference. Santogold mostly just does the one-note hook, but she finds time for a rap-cadenced
sing-song verse repping Bed-Stuy. Where Brooklyn at? It's here if you listen, but not quite in all
of its glory (such as it is). (via a

Philistines may have noticed something compelling in its chirpy, nomadic rumble. Speaking of
ruptures, get a load of that rip in the space/time continuum: "Fitnah", from Barcelona-based
Filastine's forthcoming emDirty Bomb/em for DJ/rupture's a
href="http://www.sootrecords.com/"strongSOOT/strong/a label, is a beguilingly globetrotting track
that manages to sound simultaneously ancient and of the moment. It opens with a collage of TV
static, mournful (yes, mournful) Theremin, muffled voices, chiming bells, handclaps, and clicking
percussion that seems like it could be the mechanical whir of a camera shutter or a copy machine.
Meanwhile, singer Jessika Skeletalia Kenney traces the kind of melancholic modal wail you'd hear
walking among Middle Eastern storefronts in Queens (or, presumably, in the Middle East), while
beneath her booms a heavy dubstep bassline and stuttering low-end beat. Philistines, alert your
authorities./p p object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="300"
