For this year, I’m going to be doing an advent calendar for the blog, starting today. I know Advent actually started yesterday, but 1-24 is just a lot easier, so please forgive me.

This year, in a nod to October’s “Stars of Political Cartooning,” I will have a different Christmas cartoon by a notable political cartoonist for each day of the calendar, beginning with perhaps the most famous Santa Claus cartoon of all time!

The calendar will go up in about ten minutes (it’ll run in the mornings the rest of the time).

Windows market share dives below 90% for first time
Posts biggest one-month drop in the past two years; Mac OS X gains ground

December 1, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp.'s Windows OS last month took its biggest market share dive in the past two years, erasing gains made in two of the past three months and sending the operating system's share under 90% for the first time, an Internet measurement company reported today.

In November, 89.6% of users who connected to the Web sites that Net Applications Inc. monitors did so from systems powered by Windows, a drop of 0.84 of a percentage point from October. The decrease was the largest slip by Windows in the past two years and easily bested other recent down months, including May 2008 and December 2007, when Windows lost 0.51 and 0.63 percentage points, respectively.

Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X, meanwhile, posted its biggest gain in the same two-year period, growing by 0.66 percentage point to end the month at 8.9%. November was the third month running that Apple's operating system remained above 8%.

Vince Vizzaccarro, Net Applications' executive vice president of marketing, attributed Windows' slip to some of the same factors he credited with pushing down the market share of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. "The more home users who are online, using Macs and Firefox and Safari, the more those shares go up," he said. November was notable for a higher-than-average number of weekend days, as well as the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., he said.

Windows' share typically falls on weekends and after work hours, as users surf from home computers, a larger percentage of which run Mac OS X than do work machines.

Notable in Windows' downturn was a dramatic drop in share of the aged Windows XP -- the largest decrease since January 2008 -- and a major uptick in Windows Vista's share. While XP lost 1.81 percentage points, Vista gained back 1.16 points of that, its largest move since last January.

Windows 2000, the only other edition that Net Applications tracks, continued its slide toward 1%, falling to 1.56% during November.

As expected, Vista cracked the 20% mark for the first time last month, ending November with a 20.45% share.

Windows' share shows no sign of stopping its slow slide; in the past 12 months, Microsoft's market share has fallen from 91.79%, a decrease of more than 2 percentage points. During the same period, Apple has increased its operating system market share by 1.56 points, or a gain of 21.3%.

Net Applications also noted a small boost in market share for the open-source Linux operating system, which grew from 0.71% in October to 0.83% last month. In August and September, however, Linux had a share above the 0.9% mark.

In conjunction with Prism Comics, the preeminent website for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) comics and creators, every day this month I will be detailing one good comic book/graphic novel with LGBT themes.

Today, for our last entry, we look at one of the most acclaimed works of all time that featured LGBT themes!

Love and Rockets is an amazing comic book series written and drawn by the Hernandez brothers, primarily Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez.

Both Gilbert and Jaime had their long-running stories through the original series, and it is Jaime’s series, Locas, that we’re really discussing here today (although Gilbert’s work is amazing on its own).

This hardcover collects pretty much the entire relationship between Maggie and Hopey between 1981 and 1996.

Maggie and Hopey are two of the most fascinating characters in comics, particularly when they are together, although it is notable how much time they spent APART during this story. Hopey is on the road a lot with her (bad) band, and yet we still get to see how much a bond the two share, even when not with each other.

The relationship between Maggie and Hopey began as best friends, but it soon evolved into something more than that, and more than a romantic relationship, too - their relationship is almost undefinable.

All we know is whether they are “with” each other or not, they are great together (Jaime’s brilliant, Archie Comics inspired artwork certainly does not hurt matters).

I think acclaimed comic artist José Villarrubia put it best when he said “The Defining book for Alternative comics in the Eighties, Maggie and Hopey are the most beloved on and off queer couple in comics.”

Well said, José.

A total of 1,437,180 new cancer cases and 565,650 deaths from cancer are projected to occur in the United States in 2008. Notable trends in cancer incidence and mortality include stabilization of incidence rates for all cancer sites combined in men from 1995 through 2004 and in women from 1999 through 2004 and a continued decrease in the cancer death rate since 1990 in men and since 1991 in women. Overall cancer death rates in 2004 compared with 1990 in men and 1991 in women decreased by 18.4% and 10.5%, respectively, resulting in the avoidance of over a half million deaths from cancer during this time interval. This report also examines cancer incidence, mortality, and survival by site, sex, race/ethnicity, education, geographic area, and calendar year, as well as the proportionate contribution of selected sites to the overall trends. Although much progress has been made in reducing mortality rates, stabilizing incidence rates, and improving survival, cancer still accounts for more deaths than heart disease in persons under age 85 years.
