The Internet is close to a meltdown, according to The Register. The culprit, according to author Richard Bennett, is the popular BitTorrent client uTorrent, which introduced a new type of file transfer with its most recent alpha version. BitTorrent clients have long been using the TCP protocol to facilitate file transfers, but now uTorrent is moving to UDP, a protocol that is very popular for streaming media, VoIP and other real-time transfers. This will essentially lead to torrents eating up all of the bandwidth available for VoIP, according to Bennet, who calls uTorrent’s UDP transfers a “net-killing feature.”

Of course, the same argument was made when UDP-based VoIP connections and video streams became popular — and the Internet hasn’t ceased to exist. The truth is that uTorrent’s UDP implementation could actually be a step toward alleviating congestion problems. Bennet, however, decided to ignore this and instead serve up nothing more than a thinly veiled rant against net neutrality.

Bennet’s piece is based on a belief that UDP traffic is “aggressive” and uncontrollable, whereas TCP is the nice and proper protocol that can be easily managed. This notion ignores the basic fact that P2P developers, in order to make the protocol work at all, need to implement TCP-like functionalities on top of UDP, one of which includes congestion control. You simply can’t operate a P2P client that eats up all of its users’ bandwidth, much less build a successful business model on top of it.

BitTorrent Inc. has been working on establishing itself as a CDN solutions provider, offering media companies the ability to tap into its vast user base to deliver video and other huge files. Of course, this only works if end users are actually willing to provide some part of their upload bandwidth, and they are only willing to do so if file transfers don’t stop them from doing other things, like playing online games or making VoIP calls.

BitTorrent has traditionally entrusted its users with figuring out how to balance their network load, meaning that users had to manually limit their client’s maximum upload and download rate in case they encountered choppy Skype connections or similar problems.

uTorrent’s new implementation wants to automate this process by regulating its UDP traffic in relationship to ongoing TCP transfers. The company has tested its congestion control in recent months, and the first results seem encouraging, as a quote from a report (PDF) that the company recently shared with the IETF reveals:

“In one example, (BitTorrent) was used to download and seed game updates while an online multiplayer game was being played. With TCP used for transport the way it is usually used in BitTorrent, ping times shot up to 2000 milliseconds and beyond and stayed there while seeding. With the novel congestion control, ping times were in the 50-100 millisecond range, while the upload rate remained essentially unchanged.”

For now, we do have to take the company’s word for it that this actually works. uTorrent is not open source, and the client’s UDP file transfer protocol hasn’t been publicly specified, either. BitTorrent Inc. V-P Simon Morris has declared in a public response to the Register article that his company is working with the IETF to find “solutions that can be standardized and broadly adopted in due course.” In fact, BitTorrent engineer Stanislav Shalunov is co-chairing an IETF working group for this very purpose.

So why did Bennett chose to ignore all of this? Because a little scaremongering can go a long way to make the case for an ISP-based network management clampdown on P2P traffic. The only way to prevent the coming Internet meltdown, he contends, is to filter out uTorrent’s UDP transfers on the ISP level, and the only way to get this done is do away with net neutrality. Right — because if there’s one thing that we’ve learned from the financial sector, it’s that meltdowns are best prevented by doing away with regulation.

It said no retail customer-facing staff in branches or call centres would be affected. /ppCredit Suisse, the Swiss investment bank, added to the gloom when it announced that it was cutting 650 UK jobs. It has offices in London, Birmingham and Manchester. /ppMeanwhile, Halfords became the latest retailer to suffer from the slowdown on the high street, saying it would cut about 200 posts across its network of more than 450 stores, along with 50 more at its head office in Redditch, Worcestershire. /ppAnd luxury sports car maker Aston Martin said it was planning to axe 600 full-time and temporary jobs because of the downturn in the world economy. The jobs will hit the company's factory at Gaydon in Warwickshire and follows a fall in sales. The Unite union said it was "devastating news" for the workers, especially so close to Christmas. /ppThe latest monthly snapshot of the manufacturing sector from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply showed the worst activity reading since records were first kept in 1992 and a record low in employment intentions, showing firms are laying off workers in droves. The so-called purchasing managers' index — a broad measure of activity, orders and employment in the sector — plunged to 34.4 last month, much lower than expected and way below the 50 level that divides expansion from contraction./pp"The scale of the downturn in the UK manufacturing PMI during November is unprecedented," said Rob Dobson, economist at Markit, which compiles the survey./ppThe survey's employment indicator fell at a record pace, spelling further job cuts ahead. Unemployment has been rising all year but the pace of increase has been accelerating and experts expect it to reach two million by Christmas, up from 1.8 million now./ppThere was also a string of bad figures on manufacturing around the world with the eurozone, US and China all showing output on the downturn. The euro zone manufacturing PMI tumbled to a record 35.6, while the Institute of Supply Management in the United States reported its PMI for manufacturing fell to 36.2, the lowest since 1982. /pp"The November US ISM manufacturing survey has continued today's run of awful purchasing managers' index data from around the world," said James Knightley, economist at ING financial markets./ppCompounding the gloom, the respected National Bureau of Economic Research, a group of economists based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said "the decline in economic activity in 2008 met the standard for a recession"./ppThere was also grim news from China as figures showed its industrial output had slumped because of the world economic downturn, putting paid to the notion that the nation would "decouple" from the world economy and pull ahead by itself./ppThe United Nations said the world economy faced its biggest downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In its Global Outlook report, the UN lowered its forecast for worldwide growth to 1% for 2009, from 2.5% this year and way below the 4%-5% enjoyed for much of this decade. La Fondation Mac Arthur vient de livrer les résultats d’une imposante étude qualitative sur la pratique des nouveaux médias par les jeunes. Ce projet de recherche sur la jeunesse numérique a rassemblé sur 3 ans plus de 28 chercheurs et s’est intéressé aux pratiques de plus de 800 jeunes.

Selon les conclusions de l’étude Vivre et apprendre avec les nouveaux médias, le temps que les adolescents et les jeunes adultes passent en ligne, sur MySpace ou sur leur messagerie instantanée, n’est pas une perte de temps, mais leur permet de grandir, de mûrir. “En passant du temps en ligne, les jeunes acquièrent des savoir-faire sociaux et techniques qui leur sont nécessaires pour participer à la société contemporaine”, explique au New York Times la sociologue Mizuko Ito qui a dirigé l’étude (blog). “Ils apprennent à s’entendre avec les autres, à gérer leur identité publique, à créer des pages web.” Pour Mizuko Ito, les dangers de l’internet sont surestimés. “Il y a beaucoup de désarroi sur ce que font les jeunes en ligne. La plupart du temps, ils se socialisent avec leurs amis ou avec d’autres jeunes qu’ils ont rencontrés à l’école, en vacances ou au sport.”

Typologie des pratiques des jeunes

Interviewée longuement (seconde et troisième partie) avec d’autres auteurs de l’étude sur le blog d’Henry Jenkins (directeur du programme d’études comparée des médias au MIT), Mimi Ito explique que l’apport principal de l’étude a été de comprendre comment différents types de pratiques étaient reliés les uns aux autres. “Ce qui distingue les pratiques médiatiques des jeunes repose sur la différence entre ce que nous avons appelé les pratiques conduites par l’amitié et les pratiques organisées autour de centres d’intérêt. La participation axée sur l’amitié correspond à ce que la plupart des jeunes font en ligne : passer du temps avec leurs amis, s’amuser, flirter et se comparer par l’intermédiaire des sites sociaux comme MySpace ou Facebook. La participation axée sur les centres d’intérêt, elle, renvoie à des pratiques plus créatives ou plus technophiles, où les jeunes se connectent en ligne avec d’autres autour de passions ou d’intérêts partagés tels que les jeux ou la production créative.”

En plus de ces participations axées sur l’amitié ou les centres d’intérêt, “nous avons également identifié trois types de participation et d’apprentissage”, explique Haether Horst, anthropologue à l’université de Californie :

• “Hanging out” (passer du bon temps ensemble), en utilisant des outils comme la messagerie instantanée, Facebook ou MySpace pour retrouver et discuter avec ses amis ;
• “Messing out” (surfer, se frotter à l’extérieur), chercher de l’information, bricoler avec des moyens expérimentaux ou naviguer au hasard ;
• “Geeking out” (bidouiller), ou se plonger en profondeur dans un domaine d’intérêt ou de connaissance spécialisé.

“Ce qui est important à propos de cette typologie est qu’il ne s’agit pas de classer les jeunes comme ayant une identité unique ou un ensemble d’activités bien déterminé. Mais d’identifier clairement différentes façons dont ils peuvent participer à la culture médiatique. (…) La diversité des pratiques reflète les différentes motivations, les niveaux d’engagement et d’intensité dans l’emploi de ces nouveaux médias”, explique Mimi Ito. Les jeunes utilisent la messagerie instantanée et le téléphone mobile pour se coordonner avec leurs amis, mais aussi des capacités techniques pointues pour télécharger des films ou encore, trouver des tutoriels pour apprendre à bidouiller leur ordinateur.

L’étude insiste longuement sur le fait que les jeunes utilisent l’internet pour se socialiser entre eux. Comme le dit la chercheuse danah boyd, “il est essentiel pour les adultes de se rendre compte que ces sites fonctionnent essentiellement pour renforcer des connexions préexistantes, en utilisant les technologies comme moyen de médiation. La mobilité des jeunes est fortement restreinte, et les technologies sont un moyen pour eux de sortir du cadre de l’école. Les sites sociaux sont devenus des moyens d’agrandir leur espace. Le fait qu’ils puissent être utilisés par les jeunes pour se connecter avec des gens qu’ils ne connaissent pas ne signifie pas qu’ils le fassent. En mettant l’accent sur les risques, les adultes ont perdu le contact avec les avantages que ces sites offrent à la jeunesse.”

Tout à fait, renchérit Christo Sims, étudiant à l’école d’information de Berkeley, la plupart des pratiques observées montrent que les jeunes utilisent les sites sociaux pour compléter leurs relations sociales hors ligne plutôt que pour se faire de nouveaux amis à l’autre bout du monde. “Cela dit, il y a bien sûr eu des cas où les jeunes ont développé des relations en ligne qui s’étendaient au-delà de l’école, de leur quartier ou de leurs groupes d’activités. Les jeunes les plus marginalisés (comme les homosexuels, les minorités ethniques ou les immigrants) dans leurs univers locaux et sociaux vont plus souvent en ligne à la recherche d’amitié ou d’intimité.” Les pratiques axées sur les centres d’intérêt produisent plus souvent des interactions avec des gens au-delà de leur région ou des groupes sociaux auxquels les jeunes appartiennent. “Quand dans ces cas-là des amitiés se développent, elles ressemblent à des relations entre correspondants, partageant des impressions sur ce à quoi la vie ressemble dans leurs villes respectives, discutant des défis ou des problèmes à être adolescents.” Des interactions qui ressemblent plutôt à une auto-exploration ou à un jeu sur l’identité.

Les sites de réseau social, les jeux en ligne, les sites de partage vidéo, les gadgets comme les iPod et les téléphones mobiles, sont désormais les accessoires de la culture des jeunes. L’extension des liens d’amitié et des intérêts
Les espaces en ligne permettent aux jeunes de se connecter avec leurs pairs par de nouveaux moyens. La plupart des jeunes utilisent les réseaux en ligne pour étendre leurs relations amicales entre leurs contextes familiers, l’école, les organisations religieuses, les activités sportives et autres activités locales. Ils peuvent être always on, en contact constant avec leurs amis par SMS, messagerie instantanée, téléphone mobile ou connexion internet. Cette présence continue exige une maintenance et des négociations à travers des communications privées comme la messagerie instantanée ou les téléphones mobiles et à travers des communications publiques comme les sites sociaux tels que MySpace ou Facebook. Avec ces pratiques conduites par l’amitié, les jeunes sont en contact constant avec des gens qu’ils connaissent déjà dans leur vie réelle. La majorité des jeunes utilisent les nouveaux médias pour passer du temps avec leurs amis et étendre leurs liens d’amitié de cette façon.

Un plus petit nombre de jeunes utilisent également leur connexion pour trouver de l’information ou explorer leurs centres d’intérêt qui vont au-delà de ce à quoi ils ont accès à l’école ou de ce qu’ils trouvent dans leur communauté locale.
