British orchestras have been snubbed in a list of the world’s best. The London Symphony Orchestra, in fourth place, is the country’s sole representative among the twenty finest bands, according to a panel of leading international critics.

This list needs two health warnings. First, any orchestra is only as good (or bad) as the maestro waggling the baton. I’ve heard the Vienna Philharmonic, for instance, play wonderfully and atrociously – in the same week.
