 Adobe officially unveiled the P2P video streaming capabilities of Flash 10 to
developers this week. The technology itself is still in its infancy, but the mere fact that Adobe
decided to embrace P2P for Flash 10 made a lot of headlines earlier this year. Many people,

GigaOM, wondered whether Adobe was taking aim at the CDN market with this technology and
whether we will soon all watch our YouTube videos in a P2P fashion.
The short answer is: We won’t — at least not with Adobe’s help. The
current P2P implementation, which goes by the name Real-Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP),
isn’t really suited for mass-scale video delivery. Instead, it focuses solely on scenarios
in which one client exchanges live video or audio data with another client. Think video
conferences, Flash-based VOIP or even multi-player games. Just not YouTube. Not anytime soon.
RTMFP is essentially based on the idea that real-time video or voice interaction between two
users of Flash or Air applications shouldn’t have to deal with the latency and bandwidth
burden of a server-based relay. It’s just faster and cheaper to let the kids talk amongst
themselves. Adobe does use a central server to authenticate users and facilitate the exchange of
the data, but the actual video streams flow directly between the users of the application in
question.

So who is running that server? RTMFP will eventually be supported by future versions of
Adobe’s Flash Media Server, but the company wants to first integrate it into its new Cocomo cloud services, which
went into beta last month. For now, only a subset of all Cocomo servers run by Adobe support
RTMFP, but Adobe developer Nigel Pegg assured me that his team hasn’t seen any capacity
problems just yet.
Pegg first wrote about the new protocol earlier this week on Adobe’s Collaborative Methods blog, detailing
how Flex developers can add RTMFP support to their applications with a few lines of extra code.
He told me that one of the big advantages of this solution is that it switches effortlessly
between centralized and P2P data delivery. “We tend to see performance degradations after a
certain number of receiving participants is reached,” he said.
One example for such a problem would be if you use a Flash P2P video chat and your broadband
connection simply can’t support to serve all participants. “What’s cool about
how Cocomo approaches this is that, once that limit is reached, Cocomo’s foundation classes
swap down automatically, in mid-stream (to server-based video delivery)”, Pegg explained.
Speaking of video delivery: Adobe goes to great lengths to dispel the myth that it plans to
P2P-ify all web-based Flash video with this new protocol. “Flash player 10 will not enable
swarming, multi-cast or broadcast quality live video,” the protocol’s FAQ (PDF) reads, and it goes on: “RTMFP
will have no impact on the business of a CDN.” The company even tries to avoid the acronym
P2P completely, instead talking about client-to-client streaming.
Of course, the fact that Adobe doesn’t support any YouTube — or even
Ustream-like environments — with RTMFP doesn’t mean that the company
won’t go down that road eventually. Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch told Om earlier this year that the company is “taking small
steps” and “using P2P in a very basic form” to make sure it doesn’t break
web video. Which could mean that this is a first step down a potentially very disrupting path.

Whither BitTorrent? The company is picking itself up and putting itself back together after
recent
exec departures and layoffs. And it has
finally shed its consumer business, the download store that had helped kicked off
Hollywood’s last few years of digital dealmaking, but never did much after that.
We just got off the phone with BitTorrent VP of Marketing Simon Morris, who filled us in on the
company’s changing strategy, as well as the recent hubbub about it moving away from the P2P
protocol to one that would interfere with VoIP and other activity. Morris said that following
the company’s multiple rounds of layoffs, BitTorrent is now “in safe shape” to
move forward. A lightly edited transcript follows.
NewTeeVee: So, I saw that the Torrent Entertainment Network is no longer
up. When did that shut down?
Simon Morris: I think it was Nov. 17, a little over two weeks ago.
NewTeeVee: Was that due to lack of use?
Morris: It was due to two things. We found it very hard to make it a profitable
business endeavor. If you look at the things we’re trying to do as we shrink down the
company due to the economic environment, we’re experts in content delivery over the
internet. With the Torrent Entertainment Network we were stepping into a new domain of
merchandising of consumer entertainment products. In many ways, the retrenchment of the company
has been really focusing on what we’re good at.
NewTeeVee: Can you give specific numbers on how many users or downloads you had?
Morris: No. It wasn’t sufficiently successful for us. We investigated all
sorts of different approaches: try before you buy, download to own, download to rent,
ad-supported streaming. Ultimately, I wouldn’t say us retrenching away from it is any
indication it can’t be done, it’s just pure resources.
NewTeeVee: It seems from your shutdown FAQ that you’re
doing a good job of taking care of obligations to former customers.
Morris: We have DRM servers; we’ll just leave them up. It seems from a PR
point of view far more sensible to leave those things in place.
NewTeeVee: So, what’s happening with your remaining businesses? How is the
P2P CDN business going?
Morris: We’re focusing both on our consumer BitTorrent client but also on
our DNA content delivery service. The client is more popular than ever. Though I don’t know
if you saw the article in The
Register this week? We’re now talking to the guy about writing a followup. You will
find his opinion may have changed.
NewTeeVee: That was about moving to the UTP protocol?
Morris: It was about moving from P2P to UTP. The tone of the article and the
hysteria surrounding it was about creating a greedy protocol to bring the Internet to its knees,
and in fact it’s the opposite, we’re working on a more polite, gentler protocol.
We’ve briefed the ISPs, including Comcast, and we’re ultimately not trying to do
something that would damage ourselves.
NewTeeVee: And as for the DNA product?
Morris: The DNA client also has the benefit of this polite protocol, which has
actually already been implemented in the DNA client. The new protocol is UTP, based on UDP, but
with a very important layer built on top that gives it particular congestion control.

 The ambitious ad-supported music service Qtrax
has announced a deal with its second major label: Sony. As part of the deal, Qtrax will offer
Sony's digital music catalog for free to those who install its music downloading client.
As with Qtrax's deals with EMI and Universal, Sony only agreed to
license its regular digital music catalog, consisting of the same music it has already licensed
to digital music stores like iTunes and free, ad-supported sources such as imeem and SpiralFrog.
Qtrax's ultimate goal, however, is to go far beyond that, allowing users to download unreleased,
live, rare, remixed and other major label music that's not part of that official catalog, from
Usenet or possibly another P2P source. Unlike current P2P networks, Qtrax would share ad revenue
with labels and publishers of those works.
In that way, Qtrax president and CEO Allan Klepfisz told Wired.com, the company would be able to
legitimately offer as many as 30 million songs as compared to the 8 million or so currently
available on iTunes. That idealized offering remains a glint in Klepfisz's eye. although it is
worth noting that Qtrax has brought another major onboard for the existing version of its
service.
"We are always exploring new and exciting ways of bringing our music to fans in the digital space
and are very happy to support Qtrax and their innovative ad-supported business model," stated
Sony global digital business and US sales president Thomas Hesse. "Sony BMG has a well deserved
reputation for innovation," said Qtrax's Klepfisz. "We welcome the addition of this vast and
vital catalogue to Qtrax's worldwide service," Klepfisz continued.
Note: The Sony label still calls itself Sony BMG, although the Bertelsmann Group sold its share of
the company to Sony in August. As a result, we prefer the more accurate "Sony" to "Sony/BMG."

gratis/strong, que se adapta a tus gustos y que es fácil de usar. En cuanto a mi rol, soy
uno de los fundadores y hago de todo aunque me centro más entre el desarrollo de producto y

streaming directo vía web. ¿Qué ventajas entendéis que tiene sobre
soluciones basadas en P2P como era, por ejemplo, Joost o son todavía Vuze y otros como
Zattoo?/b/p pQue no te tienes que descargar un programa en el ordenador y luego instalarlo...
hablamos de inmediatez y universalidad. /p pLa propuesta de valor de Zattoo es diferente, al darte
la televisión en abierto sin tener que sintonizar nada ni instalar ninguna tarjeta. Con
todo, las cifras de la misma propuesta de valor directamente desde la web sería aún
más grande. Zattoo ha declarado que tiene un millón de descargas de su programa.
Nosotros tenemos un millón de usuarios únicos al mes también. Simplemente digo
que cuantos menos frenos para el usuario, mejor./p blockquote class="cita"pEs difícil decir
qué tendrán los usuarios al lado de la tele dentro de dos años, pero sí
te digo que la conectividad va a multiplicarse bien a través de set top boxes como el
nuestro que te den acceso a muchos más contenidos, bien desde el propio televisor que se
conectará a la Red./p/blockquote pbEn cuanto a experiencia de usuario, se comenzó
buscando algo similar a la televisión: nada más entrar ya se activaba el
vídeo, ahora mantenéis en la versión ".com" una más similar a Hulu.
¿no funciona en la web el replicar la experiencia tv?/b/p pOfrecemos dos sabores distintos
para llegar a todo el mundo. En el .tv nos acercamos más a la experiencia de
televisión a la que le añadimos la posibilidad de ver contenidos on demand. Este
entorno es ideal para aquellos que tienen una pantalla grande o que conectan el ordenador a tu
televisor o para un futuro entorno de set top box conectado a la tele y con mando a distancia./p
pEn el .com lo que pretendemos es satisfacer a una demanda más acostumbrada al entorno web
donde lo importante es trabajar en potenciar y darle visibilidad al contenido. Aquí la
experiencia televisiva de entrar y automáticamente ver una parrilla de programación
adaptada a tus gustos es menos necesaria./p pLo importante para nosotros es la
personalización y la adaptación al usuario./p blockquote class="cita"pHabrá
que ver cómo queda la oferta de TDT, cómo se desarrolla el HD y el cable porque TODOS
competimos por la atención del usuario./p/blockquote pbPrecisamente quería
preguntarte por el camino contrario, internet hacia el televisor. Hace poco anunciasteis un set-top
box que permitía ver ADNStream. Creo que es un requisito obligado para el vídeo en
internet, pero tengo muchas dudas sobre el modelo "set-top box ligado a un proveedor" en lugar de
uno abierto. ¿qué piensas que tendrán los usuarios al lado de la tele dentro
de dos años?/b/p pNuestro diseño no va a estar cerrado a contenidos de otros,
habrá más contenidos que los de ADNstream con un menú de entrada cuidado y
claro. No es "totalmente" abierto en el sentido que no hay un navegador que te permita ir donde
quieras como en el PC. Para ello tiene que mejorar algo más la tecnología. Estoy
seguro de que lo lograremos pronto pero no es inmediato./p pEn cuanto a qué tendremos dentro
de dos años, es difícil hacer predicciones en un sector que cambia cada tres meses,
pero sí te digo que la conectividad va a multiplicarse bien a través de set top boxes

Once subscribed, you can watch television streamed to your computer, via a

href="http://uk.techcrunch.com/2008/12/03/live-tv-on-the-iphone-livestation-previews-its-app/"set
to announce an iPhone app/a that will do the same thing. Like we said, it seems like a great idea
-- who wouldn't want to watch some TV while waiting for the train or sitting the doctor's office --
but investment money and promises do not a working iPhone app make.br /br /Even the Livestation rep
says it's still in development right now, and he won't give a date other than "soon." I have no
doubt that we'll soon see streaming TV on the iPhone -- with the growing popularity of sites like
Hulu and Netflix's own streaming video service, and a similar promise of streaming shows from a
href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iTV/"i.TV/a, it definitely seems like that's where media is headed,
even portable media. But this isn't something to hold your breath for quite yet -- I'm happy with a

P2P users and Open Source advocates alike were a little perplexed when a
href="http://torrentfreak.com/record-labels-to-sue-vuze-limewire-and-sourceforge-081114/"
target="_blank"news got out last month/a that the French music industry association SPPF is suing a
href="http://www.sourceforge.net" target="_blank"Sourceforge/a as part of a lawsuit campaign
against P2P vendors. Sourceforge has been hosting the Open Source multi-network P2P client
Shareaza, and SPPF aparently wanted them to stop doing so. Or so we all thought.br / br / It looks
like the reality is far more grim. a

target="_blank"Informationweek is reporting today/a that Sourceforge apparently got targeted
because "its engineers carried out the development of (Shareaza)". Someone apparently really didn't

de près des 3/4 de sa connectivité. Les développeurs du célèbre

le protocole UDP au détriment du protocole TCP actuellement préféré, en
protestation contre les politiques de bridage mises en place récemment par de nombreux
fournisseurs d'accès à Internet. a

près de la moitié de trafic total mondial, avec Bittorrent comme principal
responsable d'une grande partie de toutes ces données. Pour remettre tout cela en
perspective, penchons-nous rapidement sur ces deux grands protocoles d'échanges de
données utilisées sur la toile. Leurs différences sont loin d'être
négligeables.br / br / A ma droite, acronym title="Transfer Control Protocol"TCP/acronym.
C'est le protocole utilisé pour près de 98% de trafic mondial. Pour envoyer des
informations, les deux machines effectuent ce que l'on appelle un span
class="italique"handshake/span ; par ailleurs des mécanismes de contrôle
vérifient que les données ne se perdent pas en route ou sont reroutées
ailleurs, assurant une intégrité des échanges appréciable. Pour
établir une connexion entre deux machines Bob et Alice, il y a 3 étapes :br / br /
« Salut Alice, ça va ? J'aimerai bien t'envoyer un truc, ça pose un
problème ? » (SYN)br / « Salut Bob, non j'ai rien de mieux à faire,
envoie la sauce ! » (SYN-ACK)br / « Okidoki, ça va arriver sous peu. »
(ACK)br / br / Et à partir de là, Bob peut envoyer ses données à
Alice.br / br / Cette mini-conversation a lieu entre autres pour naviguer sur le web, papoter avec
les amis sur les services de messagerie instantanée, ou encore télécharger des
fichiers par FTP. Si le protocole détecte des pertes, dans le cas d'un réseau
surchargé, le protocole fait en sorte que les paquets soient renvoyés dans un
délai raisonnable tout en ralentissant la cadence pour éviter un embouteillage trop
important.br / br / A ma gauche, acronym title="User Datagram Protocol"UDP/acronym. Ce dernier
n'inclut aucun système de handshake, résultant en une vitesse accrue, au
détriment de l'intégrité des données. On l'utilise dans la VoIP (ou
voix sur IP) ou encore dans les jeux vidéo en ligne. En effet, dans ce genre de cas, peu
importe si quelques paquets se perdent en chemin, puisque dans des applications comme la VoIP, peu
importe si on perd un peu d'infos tant que notre interlocuteur reste intelligible. Il s'agit donc
d'une alternative très intéressante pour envoyer beaucoup d'information rapidement,
au risque de perdre quelques bricoles en route ; on se débarrasse de tous ces paquets aussi

class="smilies"/ br / br / Jusqu'alors, µTorrent, véritable
référence sur laquelle s'appuient tous les clients tiers (Azureus, Deluge, KTorrent
et des dizaines d'autres), utilisait TCP. Le trafic du P2P est gigantesque et les FAI ont mis en
place des mesures, parfois drastiques pour privilégier le trafic dit prioritaire, comme la
navigation Web, évitant que toute la bande passante disponible disparaisse.br / br / h3Une
transition à haut risque/h3br / br / Là où ça coince, c'est qu'une
transition vers UDP du trafic bittorrent rendrait impossible de privilégier certains types
de trafic sans faire souffrir les amateurs de jeux vidéo et les entreprises qui reposent de
plus en plus sur des solutions de VoIP pour leurs communications. En effet, il est techniquement
impossible de mettre en place du filtrage sur le contenu sans utiliser des techniques très
intrusives. Si encore les FAI disposaient des ressources matérielles pour mettre un place
une telle entreprise de scan des données transitant par leurs serveurs, il y a fort à
parier que les utilisateurs auraient vite fait de crier à l'atteinte de leur vie
privée. Aucune entreprise sérieuse aux données confidentielles n'accepterait
un tel contrôle.br / br / br / div class="flot_gauche"a

diminuerait de près de 75 %. Les Fournisseurs pourraient alors se résoudre à
mettre en place des quotas de données brutes par utilisateur, avec un coup
supplémentaire pour les utilisateurs au trafic entièrement légitime. Le
débat fait actuellement rage au sein de la communauté Bittorent, et nombreuses sont
les voix qui s'élèvent contre cette mesure qui pourrait mettre le réseau
à genoux et perturber le trafic mondial. Les scénarios catastrophes ne manquent pas,
comme la décision de rendre illégale la possession d'un client Bittorrent par les
différents gouvernements. On en est bien sûr pas encore là mais les
répercussions envisageables ne laissent pas moins des sueurs froides chez les responsables
réseau et les entreprises dont la qualité de la bande passante est primordiale. En
effet, payer une fortune son fournisseur ne sert pas à grand-chose si les câbles qui
relient les fournisseurs entre eux sont eux-mêmes engorgés.br / br / La nuit
dernière, la société Bittorrent, qui édite µTorrent, a
href="http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=379206#p379206"a réagi violemment/a aux
accusations du Register en déclarant que la manoeuvre était au contraire là
pour mettre en place un contrôle des surcharges réseau plus efficace que ce que TCP a
à offrir. Cette déclaration tardive ne semble pas convaincre grand monde.br / br /
h3Conclusion et liens qui vont bien/h3br / br / Les cyniques diront qu'il ne reste plus qu'à
espérer que les développeurs sauront faire la part des choses. Quoi qu'il en soit,
cela pose la question de la responsabilité des éditeurs de logiciels quant à
l'état du réseau résultant de leur utilisation. L'internet actuel repose sur
l'idée naïve que tout le monde joue fair-play. Cela n'est pas sans rappeler la faille
DNS critique de l'été dernier, elle aussi le résultat d'un certain laxisme
dans la sécurité des fondations du Web. Il sera peut-être nécessaire de
