Warning! This holiday season you will be tempted to purchase one of those set-top boxes that
deliver movies directly to your TV set. You will be lured by the idea of having this content on a
digital tap, serving it up without ever needing to get off the couch. Don’t be fooled!
While these devices and services are definitely getting better — and even
approaching awesome — this holiday season is not the time to buy.
There are a lot of entrants in the set-top box space, but big names you’re already familiar
with will grab most of the attention this season. Apple,
Netflix and now Blockbuster all have set-top box solutions ready to pump piping
hot video content to your TV.
Of the three biggies, the Apple TV has
been out the longest. The box costs $229 for the 40 GB model and $329 for the 160 GB one. It
plays content, which is purchased or rented on an a la carte basis from the iTunes store, as well
as music and other content stored on your network. New releases are available for purchase (but
not always rental) day-and-date with their DVD release.
Why you should wait: Apple makes excellent products, but $229 isn’t chump
change. If you watch a lot of television shows — especially in high definition
(HD) — sticking with your cable or satellite provider might be more
economical. Plus, MacWorld is right around the corner in January. Even though my colleagues
over at The Apple Blog say a hardware update is
unlikely (Apple just did a software update for the device), why take that chance?
Where Apple takes a surgical approach to its
set-top offering, marketing a single solution, Netflix is blasting away with a shotgun —
and that’s not a bad thing. The company has worked tirelessly over the past year to get its
online streaming service up and running on a number of devices including the Roku ($99), TiVo ($149 -
$299), Xbox
($199), and Samsung and
LG
Blu-ray players ($399). Movies are streamed (not downloaded) so there is nothing kept locally on
your device — and HD streams are rolling out across most of the partnerships. Content is an
all-you-can-eat smorgasbord included your Netflix subscription price.
Why you should wait: Netflix offers a subscription plan, rather than a la carte
rentals. Because of complexities in the licensing and release windows, that meansit doesn’t
get access to new releases. So no matter what flavor box you buy, after the novelty of it all
wears off, there aren’t enough titles to choose from (unless you consider Improve Your
Sailing Skills must-see TV).
Blockbuster’s device, launched just last
week, is the latest entry in the set-top box battle. The rental chain is using 2Wire’s MediaPoint
hardware to power the service. Blockbuster says the box is free, but you do have to pre-pay $99
for 25 rentals. Boxes are available through Blockbuster.com and select retailers. The video chain
also said that, like Netflix, it will be integrating its on-demand service into Blu-ray
players and other devices such as game consoles and DVRs. Movies use progressive downloads
(not streams) for DVD-quality video, and the device supports HD. Because the movie rentals are a
la carte, new releases are generally available within 30 days of the DVD release, according to
Blockbuster.
Why you should wait: The service just came out last week, so it hasn’t
gone through a rigorous review process. Let other people find any aggravating bugs before you
plunk down your money for one.
While I may come across as a Debbie Downer, dashing your set-top dreams for this holiday season,
let me offer a bit of optimism. All of these options will only get better and cheaper in the
coming months, so your patience will be rewarded.

br/pWe’ve all been patiently waiting to see what Nokia would come up with, and our patience
has been rewarded. The release is certainly interesting, as Nokia has announced a new flagship
phone, the N97, which is packed with features. The N97 has a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel resistive
touchscreen display which supports tactile feedback, and a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out
sideways from the phone. Dubbed the “world’s most advanced mobile computer” by
Nokia, the phone also features an “always open” window to favorite internet or social
networking sites. If the mentioned specifications weren’t enough, Nokia has also thrown in
HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, 32GB on on-board memory, microSDHC card
expansion up to 48GB, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, video capture up to 30fps and a
battery that can last up to a day and a half of continuous audio playback, or 4.5 hours of video
playback. Nokia will be offering that load of features for the phone at €550
($693), and should be shipping in the first half of 2009. With a phone like this, HTC’s Touch
Pro will need to be careful, or it might just get knocked off its perch. /p pPermalink: a

This is pretty cool... I managed to see it once as a spot of light tracking across the night sky.
These folks saw a lot more than that! Not many photos, but worth checking out. nbsp; nbsp;
It’s not everyday that astronomers take a snapshot of the International Space Station from
the ground that actually show it’s shape. It takes perfect timing, patience and probably a
huge amount of luck to get it. You just have to be in the right place at the right time to do it.
However there are few who appear to have all these attributes and more... nbsp; nbsp; Enjoy!

width="1" height="1" //divpGianfranco Zola handed Chelsea a multitude of reasons to revere him as
their greatest ever player. Last night he gave them cause to toast his move into management as West
Ham restricted Liverpool's rise to the top at an angst-ridden Anfield. Reaching the summit has
rarely been greeted with such bewilderment in these parts./ppLooking down on Chelsea and Manchester
United is the only view Liverpool want this season and, as Rafael Benítez repeatedly said
afterwards, the league table makes pleasant reading today. But - there is always a but - it should
look much better. Benítez knew it, Liverpool's players knew it and the boos that greeted the
final whistle, swift yet audible, showed a frustrated home support knew it, too. A second
successive 0-0 draw at home to mid-table opposition was not the response of championship
contenders. For the second league game in succession, Liverpool were left to reflect on an
opportunity wasted./pp"We have one more point than Chelsea now so, if we can beat Blackburn at the
weekend, we will stay top of the table," said Benítez, spelling out the facts. "Yes we are
frustrated again, it is clear we deserved to win and some people can be disappointed. We are
disappointed. But we are also top of the table and the fans will enjoy seeing the table
tomorrow."/ppLiverpool were dominant last night and but for an inspired performance in the West Ham
goal from Robert Green they would have achieved their aim of establishing a three-point lead over
Chelsea. Yet this was a far more satisfying evening for the genial Italian than the ambitious
Spaniard who, with George Gillett in attendance, called on Liverpool's joint-owners to conclude
talks on his contract extension as soon as possible. "I am waiting for a communication,"
Benítez said. "Maybe we have to finish the conversations now and just think about the
football."/ppHis contract had no bearing on this stalemate, however, and only two errant offside
decisions against Carlton Cole late on, plus a wild miss from the substitute Luis Boa Morte,
prevented Zola's plan of containment and counter from working to perfection. The visitors' point
was delivered around the outstanding Green, Matthew Upson and James Collins, although a lack of
confidence in front of goal from Liverpool also contributed to the outcome. Robbie Keane,
substituted to his obvious disbelief for the 15th time in his brief Liverpool career, was a notable
but far from isolated culprit in the absence of the injured Fernando Torres./ppBenítez and
Jamie Carragher had pleaded for patience from the crowd following the frustration of being held to
0-0 by Fulham last month. Liverpool also gave their backing to the family of Michael Shields last
night, the fan jailed for allegedly attacking a Bulgarian waiter after the Champions League Final
in 2005, as they campaign for his release before a judicial review on Thursday. Once the Kop's
mosaic of "Free Michael Now" had come down, the siege of Green's goal began. But this was a night
that would stretch reserves of patience to the limit./ppCole cleared off the goal-line from Albert
Riera, Sami Hyypia headed the first of several invitations over the West Ham bar and saw a second
header blocked on the line by Cole again - all inside the opening 21 minutes. Steven Gerrard and
Dirk Kuyt also missed good openings before the interval, yet it was West Ham who came closer to a
breakthrough when their former Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy beat José Reina from 25 yards
only to see his drive rebound off the inside of a post./ppUntil a pulsating finale, when Kuyt, Boa
Morte, Ryan Babel and Cole traded chances at will, the momentum flowed towards Green. One save from
the former Hammer Yossi Benayoun, to tip the Israeli's half volley at close range, was sublime.
"I've told Robert [Green] that, if he keeps performing like this, he is going to be in the England
team," said Zola, manager of a club that had lost on their seven previous visits to Anfield. "He
has taken some stick this season but now he is getting what he deserves."/ppBenítez denied
reports, however, that Michael Owen would be the January solution to such frustrating nights. "I
can guarantee we are not going for Michael Owen," he said./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right:

that we lost the fight/i”).

img class=face src=http://planet.ubuntu.com/heads/sridhar.png alt= pJust for a second, put yourself
in the shoes of an average PC user. You use the software that came with your computer, plus perhaps
some others that you downloaded, bought in a box or #8216;borrowed#8217; from a friend. You#8217;ve
heard some good things about something called #8220;open source#8221;, but you haven#8217;t the
foggiest clue of where to get it or what applications to try. You aren#8217;t a technical person,
have limited time and even less patience. Ultimately, you#8217;re looking for something that
#8216;just works#8217; and is either free (of cost) or clearly better than what you#8217;re using
now. Why make the effort otherwise? Honestly, you#8217;d rather be down at the pub watching the
cricket with yournbsp;mates./p pHow would free software advocates best woo such a person into their
camp? They aren#8217;t going to immediately repartition their hard drive and use GNU/Linux
exclusively. They would more likely be willing to try some free software on their existing OS,
provided that the barrier was sufficiently low. If you#8217;re lucky, that toe-dip will lead to
deeper immersion in the world of FOSS, and hopefully also into some appreciation of the philosophy
beyond thenbsp;practical./p pIf this person has a knowledgeable friend or pays attention to certain
information sources, they might get some ideas on what software to use. Applications like Firefox
and OpenOffice.org are fairly popular choices these days, but what about less publicised treasures
like the GIMP or ClamWin? Sure, there are a title=Introduction to Linux, Free Software and Open
Source href=http://www.linux.org.au/linux#FindAppsWeb sites/a that let you search for FOSS
equivalents to proprietary applications, but these still require somenbsp;effort:/p ol liSearch for

application you wish to install, so can become tiresome verynbsp;quickly./p pHow could we simplify
this process? What I propose is a software management application. Let#8217;s for the sake of
brevity call it emFOSS Pack/em, named after the closest analogue I can think of, a
href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_PackGoogle Pack/a. The process is intended to be as simple
as possible for the endnbsp;user:/p ol liThe user downloads a single application (emFOSS Pack/em)
and installsnbsp;it./li liWhen they launch FOSS Pack, they can select from a menu of categorised
FOSS applications to install, similar to how a GUI package manager front-end works
onnbsp;(GNU/)Linux./li liThe user selects the applications they want, and then they are downloaded
and installed innbsp;batch./li liUninstallation should be as simple as installation, all within
FOSSnbsp;Pack./li /ol pHere#8217;s the killer feature: FOSS Pack should be able to scan the
user#8217;s system for proprietary applications. These are identified based on an internal list,
which also contains information on FOSS alternatives to those applications. Those alternatives are
presented for easy download andnbsp;install./p pFOSS Pack contains descriptions of each
application, so the user doesn#8217;t have to visit another Web site to understand what they do
(although a hyperlink should be provided as well). The option should exist to be able to select
only from applications that have Linux versions, as a means of facilitating an OS transition. FOSS
pack should also be able to automatically check for updates at regular intervals, and offer to
install them whennbsp;available./p pI#8217;m not expecting any of this to be as clean as a real
package management system. FOSS Pack will likely have to execute the external installers. Perhaps
in the future the applications authors could co-operate with FOSS Pack maintainers to deliver a
more seamlessnbsp;experience./p pIt looks to me that a lot of the pieces to create FOSS Pack are
already there, and as is often the case in the FOSS world all that#8217;s required is to tie them
together in an appropriatenbsp;way./p pstrongLotD:/strong a title=K12 Open Technologies

My macbook pro was stolen and I am overseas, insurance will pay for a new one, but i have no way of
buying one and getting it shipped without paying through the nose in ridiculous customs... so i'm
going to wait until at least early next year. i could maybe arrange someone to bring it over, but
it's a big ask.
i've been looking at the likelihood of a speed bump.
at the moment we have the following intel cpus in the macbook pros:
Code: P8600 2.4 $241 25w 3mb
T9400 2.53 $316 35w 6mb
T9600 2.8 $530 35w 6mb These are the leaked upcoming cpus to be announced on December 28.
Code: T8700 2.53 $241 25w 6mb
T9550 2.66 $316 35w 6mb
t9800 2.96 $530 45w 6mb there is also the q9100 and q9000 quad core cpus running at 2.26 and 2.0.
there is no consensus on the pricing. there is a listing for q9100 as $851, but who knows...
so to me it looks like apple could smoothly step up to a 2.53 base and top out at 2.96 if they are
willing to live with 45w drain...
of course, apple may have factored in the saving of $40 or so they will get when the old cpus drop
in january and will continue until the clarksfield cpus hit our doorsteps sometime toward the end
of 2009. apple has never made us suffer more than 9 months between bumps before though, so they
have to bump sometime in the middle between october 2008 and what is likely to be around october
2009... if they bump in feb it works out nicely.
the 17" of course has high hopes for a q9100, but at the price point of $300 wholesale over the
current high end model, apple's high profit margin tax may make it very expensive indeed.
*maybe* apple will reintroduce BTO matte screen option at the same time? that would make me
happy.
i'm kidding myself on the matte screen and apple being generous though. economic times are tough.
which will yield higher profits? make a few extra sales from idiots like me who will wait or lose a
few sales from idiots like me but increase their profit margins from idiots who don't know what
patience is.
just thought i'd throw it out there and show that apple could easily move a step up in february, if
they felt generous, while they intro'd the 17" unibody...
mots doux du type « Accès is denied Erreur 530 » Â...
chaines.
A suivre!
