You know what? Johnston might be onto something. His voice here is all Robert Smith whimper (a familiar sound to Suede's Bernard Butler, who produced this LP as well as Black Kids' first proper album), while Michael Ramirez's bright, sharp guitar riffs are Johnny Marr in full-on punctured-bicycle-on-a-hillside-desolate shimmy. I might just be getting old, but these old things work like a charm on "Turn Cold", filled out by handclaps and occasional R.E.M.-tinged acoustic guitar strums along with rapidfire basslines and steady kick-kick-snare drumming. "If these walls never cease to close in, don't me turn cold," Johnston cries, echoed by a backing singer.
