pAfter 17 grueling months, Swiss adventurer a
href="http://gizmodo.com/5046407/solar-powered-car-attempts-to-circle-globe-as-slowly-as-possible"Louis
Palmer's around-the-world trip in a solar-powered car/a is finally over. Altogether, he traveled
32,000 miles and across 40 countries./p pPalmer, who touched down at UN climate change talks in
Poznan, Poland, said the feat proved that solar power was a viable alternative to carbon-based fuel
sources. Though to do what Palmer did, you'd need to drive a tiny three-wheeler tugging along a
solar array almost as big as the car itself./p pWhile the car probably needs a major redesign (and
perhaps some more solar panel breakthroughs) to even inch close to becoming a regular on highways,
it idid/i disclose some promising technology. The car reached 55mph speeds and could travel for
300km on a single charge. Through the 17 months on almost non-stop driving, it only broke down
twice./p pThough this car's adventure is over, Palmer's not ready to give up eco-driving yet. He's
planning a trip with six vehicles around the world in 80 days (ha!) that would draw power from
hydro, geothermal and wind energy. [a

pEditors Note: We are posting this article from our July 1959 issue to offer an historical
perspective on some of the issues being discussed at the United Nations Framework Climate Change
Conference in Poznan, Poland, which began December 1 and runs through December 12./ppThe theories
that explain worldwide climate change are almost as varied as the weather. The more familiar ones
attribute changes of climate to Olympian forces that range from geological upheavals and
dust-belching volcanoes to long-term variations in the radiation of the sun and eccentricities in
the orbit of the earth. Only the so-called carbon dioxide theory takes account of the possibility
that human activities may have some effect on climate. This theory suggests that in the present
century man is unwittingly raising the temperature of the earth by his industrial and agricultural
activities./p a href=http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=carbon-dioxide-and-climate[More]/a

As more than 10,000 delegates and observers gather in Poznan, Poland, to discuss the next phase in
the battle against "climate change," a U.N. agency at the center of that hoopla badly needs to do
some in-house weather-proofing.
