width="1" height="1" //divpSpeculation is mounting that manager Roy Keane has parted company with
Sunderland. Keane is understood to have been in talks with the chairman, Niall Quinn, and other
members of the Sunderland board this morning. There has been no confirmation from the Stadium of
Light yet, but Keane is due to hold his pre-match press conference at 1pm for Saturday's trip to
Manchester United./pp/ppSunderland sit 18th in the Premier League, having lost five of their last
six games. Keane was booed after their most recent match, a 4-1 defeat to Bolton on Saturday, and
admitted afterwards that he had doubts as to whether he should be in the job. "I ask myself every
day if I'm the right man for Sunderland," he said. "I asked myself this morning, and I said I was.
Sunday morning, if the answer's no, we'll have to look at it."/pp/ppKeane took on his first
managerial role at Sunderland four games into the 2006-07 season and took them from the bottom of
the Championship table to the title and promotion. Last season they finished 15th in their first
year back in the Premier League, avoiding relegation by three points. They started this season
brightly, climbing to sixth in September. However, despite spending nearly £70m on 33 players
since his arrival at the club, Sunderland have since plummeted into the relegation zone after a
dreadful run of results./pp/ppemMore details to follow/em/pdiv style="float: left; margin-right:

width="1" height="1" //divpEngland are ready to resume their tour of India after a security report
from Chennai alleviated safety concerns. That, coupled with the prospect of similar assurance from
Mohali, has convinced the England and Wales Cricket Board that it is safe for the two Test matches
to go ahead./ppWith the exception of Ryan Sidebottom, ruled out by a side strain, and Stuart Broad,
who is being allowed a few more days to recover from a hamstring injury suffered during the recent
abandoned one-day series before flying out to Chennai, it will be a full England squad - including
Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison, and reinforced by nine members of the performance squad - that
will fly to Abu Dhabi today for a holding camp, where they will practise before moving on to
Chennai on Monday. The first of two Tests is scheduled to begin there on December 11./ppThe
announcement from Lord's of the intention to resume the tour came after two days of meetings
between ECB officials, security advisers and government departments. "The only consideration in all
our discussions has been the safety and security of the team and support staff," explained Hugh
Morris, the managing director of England cricket. "We have been delighted by the input of the
Professional Cricketers' Association and also the willingness of the Board of Control for Cricket
in India to act upon our recommendations regarding security. While we have sought to reassure
players that their safety is paramount we have not pressurised any player into making the trip
against their will./pp"Those who leave for Abu Dhabi are all anticipating travelling to India if
both the head of the PCA, Sean Morris, and I are happy that Reg Dickason's security plans have been
activated. The board and players will be kept fully informed." /ppHe added: "The PCA and ECB have
worked extremely closely on this issue, and the players have been fully supportive throughout. We
will access the highest calibre of security advice on a regular basis so that we can provide the
players with the latest accurate information. I have been assured by the ECB that they would never
compromise the players' safety and security." Both Hugh and Sean Morris were due to travel to India
last night to meet Dickason and will fly on to the United Arab Emirates to brief the players./ppThe
key to the unanimous decision to return was the positive assessment of conditions by Dickason, the
ECB security expert. Dickason was in Chennai yesterday, inspecting the team hotel, the /ppMA
Chidambaram Stadium and the route between the two, and has expressed himself satisfied with the
strong arrangements that will be put in place by the Chennai police under its commissioner, Thiru K
Radhakrishnan./pp"We can provide absolute total security," the police chief said yesterday after
Dickason had completed his tour. Dickason will now carry out a similar exercise in Mohali, before
completing his reports. Yesterday the chief executive of the ECB, David Collier, praised the way
the Indian authorities had handled the situation. "Everyone has been highly cooperative and
helpful," he said. "Everything that Reg has asked for has been agreed."/ppIf it has been viewed as
an expensive extravagance to bring the tour party home for such a brief period, then to persuade
the Test party in its entirety to return when so much talk was of dissidents is something of a
triumph. There had been suggestions from influential figures that several players, possibly
Flintoff and Harmison, were intent on staying at home regardless of the outcome of the security
report./ppMeanwhile, it was confirmed that West Indies will tour England in the early summer in
place of Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka had been pencilled in provisionally, but player commitments to the
Indian Premier League, given the backing of their cricket board, meant it was no longer a viable
option. The tour will feature two Tests, at Lord's and Chester-le-Street, and three ODIs. West
Indies' visit will provide a lead into a busy summer that also includes the Twenty20 World Cup and
an Ashes series. Its timing, with the opening Test scheduled for May 6, precludes any hope of a
large window of opportunity for England players to ply their trade in the IPL./pdiv style="float:

width="1" height="1" //divpIndia will embark on a major upgrading of security facilities at its
international stadiums in a desperate attempt to prevent the economic collapse of the international
game in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attacks./ppEmergency levels of security, perhaps
unprecedented in cricket history, have been guaranteed for England's return to India for Tests in
Chennai and Mohali, but there is no guarantee that the Indian government will be so amenable to
special measures — such as the provision of special security forces
— in the future./ppIndian cricket has therefore concluded that permanent
security measures must be introduced for all major competitions to allay players' fears about their
safety, guard against mass withdrawals and to protect the country's status as cricket's thriving
economic powerhouse./ppIndia's greatest worry is that the country that provides roughly 70% of
cricket's revenue will become the country that nobody wants to tour — causing
it to follow Pakistan towards the prospect of a depressing future playing home matches in Abu Dhabi
or Dubai./ppFor India to have to take such a step would ultimately have a disastrous effect on the
finances of the game and England, and its top players, would not be immune./ppThe driving force
behind the security measures is, unsurprisingly, Lalit Modi, vice-president of the Board of Control
for Cricket in India and commissioner of the Indian Premier League. Modi knows that the IPL will
not receive such security support from the state, so he is now pressing for what amounts to a total
modernisation of India's stadiums, with security the overwhelming priority./ppModi said after the
Mumbai atrocities: "Security is something we need to think about seriously because becoming
sidelined like Pakistan due to security threats is something that is logical. We have to ensure
that the security measures we take are the best. We shouldn't allow such attacks to disrupt our
determination."/ppHis response has been swift. He has written to representatives of the eight
grounds that stage IPL Twenty20 cricket — to insist upon new security measures.
He has contacted Shashank Manohar, the board's president, pressing for all cricketing associations
to convene an emergency meeting at the earliest opportunity./ppIt is intended that all these
measures will be in place long before the start of the next IPL tournament in April. Kevin
Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff are among the most sought-after England players —
although Flintoff is widely reported as having ruled out a return to India for the Test series when
the England squad makes its expected departure at the end of the week./ppMeasures include the
installation of permanent CCTV cameras at every stadium and the provision of turnstiles
— rather than just manned gates — at entry and exit points
to allow a more controlled check on spectator entry. Security arrangements at the eight IPL grounds
will be managed by a central agency answerable to the IPL and funding will be provided by the
Indian board. Modi also wants disaster management teams to be appointed to devise definite plans in
the event of a terrorist strike at a cricket stadium./ppIndia has always prized its rotation
system, retaining its 21 grounds, including some in such outlying places as Guwahati and
Visakhapatnam, despite much criticism from touring sides, but those grounds that do not
enthusiastically implement the new measures may find that security concerns end their status as an
international venue./ppThe IPL's governing council had already begun to examine development needs
at its eight stadiums, recognising that many of India's stadiums remain disgracefully underfunded
for such a wealthy cricketing country. Security, by necessity, has now shot to the top of the
agenda./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

width="1" height="1" //divpClose your eyes and picture the scene. The air is warm with adrenaline
and fake-tanned flesh, and thick with name-dropped designer labels. The atmosphere is one of
camaraderie, but also competition; the scent of hairspray and this season's cult perfume almost,
but not quite, masks an underlying buzz of nerves. /ppNo, I'm not talking about a Premier League
dressing room on a Saturday. I'm talking about the ladies loos in your office, or an office very
near you, at around 6.30pm one night this week or next. Because we are about to face one of the
toughest fixtures in the fashion calendar: the Christmas party. /ppThe top three all-time worst
wardrobe-crisis-inducing moments, in no particular order, are: the job interview, the first date,
and the Christmas party. But the Christmas party wardrobe crisis is, arguably, the worst of all.
After all, if you dress really, really badly to a job interview or a first date, chances are you
never have to see those people again. /ppDressing for Christmas parties is hard work for the same
reasons that the parties themselves are often quite hard work. First, Christmas parties tend to be
about getting drunk with people you already know, rather than meeting new people. It is much more
difficult to impress people with your dazzling wit when they have heard all your funniest and most
faux-self-deprecating anecdotes twice already. Second, there is the pressure to be all festive and
twinkly and marzipan-sweet, and no one apart from Cheryl Cole manages to do this without
sacrificing all fashion cred and sex appeal in the process. /ppSo it makes sense that the first
coping strategy of getting dressed for a Christmas party is the same as for dealing with the actual
party: fix yourself a large drink. Just enough to stop you taking the whole thing too seriously. Go
slow on the top-ups - 'tis the season to be merry, not so hammered that furry antlers start to seem
like an amusing accessory. /ppThe one unbreakable rule of Christmas parties is that festive-themed
accessories - antlers, Santa hats, tinsel trims - are a bad idea. Not because I'm trying to be some
sort of couture-obsessed killjoy, but because Dressing Up As Christmas screams of dumbed-down
literal mindedness. In other words, it's not just that the Santa hat looks stupid, but that it
actually makes you appear to be stupid. Beyond that, trust your instinct: the outfit that makes you
look at your reflection a few seconds more, that makes you start to imagine yourself having a good
time, is the outfit you should wear. And what's more: we think we've found that outfit for you.
These party outfits are Christmassy in a Wonderful Life kind of a way, rather than a Four
Christmasses kind of way. Some of them even have sleeves. Are we good to you or what? Why, I almost
feel like wearing a Santa hat./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom:

width="1" height="1" //divpThe Football Association is to write to Liverpool for an explanation
into the orchestrated support shown for the jailed fan Michael Shields during Monday's 0-0 draw
with West Ham United at Anfield./ppOfficials at Soho Square are considering whether to bring
disciplinary charges after taking exception at the manner in which Liverpool have publicly backed a
man who has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the attempted murder of a Bulgarian waiter,
Martin Georgiev, in May 2005./ppAnother Liverpool fan admitted being responsible for the crime
before later retracting his confession and Shields' case will go before a high court review
tomorrow. The FA, however, is alarmed that Liverpool should openly use a live televised game to try
to influence the matter./ppRafael Beniacute;tez's players wore T-shirts bearing the slogan Free
Michael Now during their pre-match warm-up and the actress Sue Johnston was invited on to the pitch
with Shields' parents to make a speech calling for the justice secretary, Jack Straw, to "do the
right thing"./ppA mosaic was held up in the Kop spelling out Free Michael Now and the match-day
programme contained an article declaring the 22-year-old's innocence. "Liverpool fan Michael
Shields should be here at Anfield for tonight's game," it began. "Instead, he will be sitting in a
prison cell."/ppThe FA's concern is linked to the recent disciplinary case against the Ipswich
midfielder David Norris for supporting the former Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick. Norris
had been charged with improper conduct after making a handcuffs gesture in dedication to McCormick,
who had been sentenced to seven years in prison for causing the death by dangerous driving of two
young brothers./ppThe FA's disciplinary department fined Norris pound;5,000 and is alarmed that
Liverpool should also publicly back someone convicted of a serious crime and, in the process, open
themselves to allegations of playing judge and jury. /ppThe matter became a subject of controversy
on radio phone-ins yesterday and the FA will, at the very least, remind Liverpool that it does not
believe it is the club's role to take on such issues. "We are not comfortable about this," one
source told the Guardian./ppThere is also an element of concern as Liverpool, according to the FA,
had not informed the authorities of their plans. In 1997, their then striker Robbie Fowler was
fined 2,000 Swiss francs by Uefa for revealing a T-shirt expressing his support for the city's
sacked dock workers./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

Last month, Mike wrote about how the English Premier League was a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20081103/1047072724.shtml"making/a threatening overtones towards
Justin.tv, after it discovered some users on the site were streaming broadcasts of its soccer
matches. It's the usual stuff from sports leagues, complaining that the sites aren't doing enough
to stop piracy, and that their safe harbor shouldn't protect them, and that the DMCA takedown
process isn't good enough. Now, a piece in The Guardian wonders if the large-scale piracy, along
with a spending slowdown, will a
href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2008/nov/26/premierleague-bskyb"hit the value of TV
rights/a deals when they come up for renewal, with broadcasters unable to justify the same level of
spending should viewer figures fall. br /br / This scenario isn't hard to imagine, but should it
occur, it will be thanks to a lack of business acumen, not piracy. These sites exist, and thrive,
because they serve demand untapped by the Premier League and its rightsholders. For instance, the
rights situation means that in England -- where the league's based and its games played -- fewer
games are broadcast on TV than in many places in the world. Here in the US, nearly every match is
broadcast each weekend; just a handful make it onto UK TV screens. British pub owners tried to
serve the untapped demand for this by buying satellite systems from foreign countries, but the EPL
a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/21/technology/21jazeera.html"shut that avenue off/a in the
courts. Likewise, users in the UK and elsewhere turn to sites like Justin.tv because they don't
have other options. The match they want to see isn't available on television, or they're not near a
TV set when the match is being played. I'd argue this drives use of the services much more than a
desire for free content does. br /br / The rights situation domestically in the UK is the way it is
because of the long-held view that putting games on TV will hold down attendance; but the small
stadium sizes and increasingly geographically distributed fan bases (along with high ticket prices)
do this already. And indeed, the experience of other sports leagues around the world would indicate
that giving fans the ability to watch their teams' games on television does little, on its own, to
hurt attendance. That sort of view seems to color the entire TV rights situation for the Premier
League: it tries to manufacture some sort of scarcity in an attempt to increase its revenues. But
the popularity of sites that make broadcasts available online makes it clear they'd be better off
answering this demand with services of their own. br /br / Here's a novel idea: instead of trying
to crack down on the likes of Justin.tv, why not require rightsholders to offer free streams of
games as parts of their deals? Then, the Premier League and its broadcast partners get to serve
this demand, instead of Justin.tv or Chinese P2P services, and get to capitalize on it through
advertising or other means. It might have some effect on pay services by giving fans with the least
willingness to pay a free service to use, but again, I'd argue that most people would still prefer
to watch their teams' games on a bigger screen and in higher quality enough to pay for it. And the
additional fans the services would reach could make new converts to paid services as well. Whatever
the EPL decides to do, it's impossible to understand how it thinks it can benefit by alienating
fans and making it difficult, if not impossible, for them to follow their teams.p
