Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films screening at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival
in the out-of-competition sections of Premieres, Spectrum, New Frontier, and Park City at Midnight.
Celebrating its 25th year, the 2009 Sundance Film Festival runs January 15-25 in Park City, Salt
Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah.

Yesterday we shared with you the
competition slate for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, which, depending on the paper you read,
was full of the dark and disturbing or the sad and melodramatic. Good to know we'll be smiling in
the cold mountains of Utah come January. Today, the Sundance Institute has announced their
non-competition films; this includes the Premieres section, which is usually full of studio flicks
-- stuff that's set to debut in theaters the following month or so, and films that feature big
stars; the big guns. Then we have the Spectrum section (with 16 dramatic films and seven docs), the
Midnight section (eight films), and the Frontier section (six films).
Among the ones that stand out to me at first glance are:
-
I Love You Philip
Morris (Premiere), with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor playing prison lovers.
-
Adventureland
- The director of Superbad follows that flick up with a comedy set in a theme park.
-
The Informers (Premiere),
based on the popular Bret Easton Ellis novel, and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger,
Winona Ryder and Mickey Rourke.
-
Moon (Premiere), which is that freaky space
flick starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey.
-
Manure (Premiere), starring Billy Bob
Thornton as a manure salesman.
-
Spread, starring Ashton Kitcher as a guy who
seduces older women. (Wonder if he's right for that role?)
-
Helen ( Spectrum), starring Ashley Judd as a
psychiatrist who fights her own depression.
-
The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle
(Spectrum) -- I just love that title.
-
Spring Breakdown (Midnight), starring Rachel
Dratch, Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, Will Arnett, Rachel Hamilton.
As we do every year, Cinematical will be on the ground in Park City, Utah bringing you
reviews, interviews and enough Sundance flavor to send a brisk mountain chill through your soul.
Check out the full non-competition slate (with descriptions) after the jump.

Media Matters for America -

During the December 3 broadcast of The Rush Limbaugh Show, guest host Mark Davis
asserted that
Cecilia Muñoz, senior vice president of the Office of Research, Advocacy, and
Legislation at the National Council of La Raza, and others at NCLR "are
amnesty fetishists" and said, "[T]hat is what you get" in an Obama administration -- "a fan of
amnesty." In fact, the position taken by NCLR and Muñoz, who has been named by Obama to be
the director of intergovernmental affairs in his administration, on immigration is far from
radical, contrary to Davis' suggestion. NCLR strongly advocates passage of comprehensive
immigration reform, a position that is shared in principle by members of Congress from both
parties and by President Bush.
NCLR states on its website:
NCLR supports comprehensive immigration reform that includes the following principles: 1) a path
to citizenship for the current undocumented population; 2) the creation of new legal channels for
future immigrant workers; 3) a reduction of family immigration backlogs; and 4) the protection of
civil rights and civil liberties. By legalizing immigrants who live, work, and contribute to life
in the U.S., the U.S. could deal fairly with hardworking people who have responded to an economic
reality ignored by the law. At the same time, the U.S. can become more secure by enforcing the
new law and by allowing undocumented immigrants to come out of the shadows and participate fully
in their communities.
Bush supported a
bipartisan
bill that would have "creat[ed] a temporary worker program" and given undocumented immigrants
who passed criminal background checks and remained employed the opportunity to apply for a green
card in the future, and ultimately citizenship. NCLR sharply criticized the "Senate's failure to move a
comprehensive immigration reform bill forward" when a cloture motion to cut off debate on that
bill
failed. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) once sponsored a
bill with Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and several other Democrats and
Republicans to create a temporary worker program and give illegal immigrants a path to apply for
a green card and ultimately for citizenship. (As Media Matters for America has noted,
during the presidential campaign, McCain abandoned his support for that bill, saying during CNN's January 30 Republican
presidential primary
debate that he would no longer vote for it if it came up for a vote in the Senate.)
From the December 3 edition of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show:
DAVIS: One quick tidbit in transition news. I believe a president-elect is judged by those he
brings into the fold. So, joining the White House staff in the Obama administration will be
Cecilia Muñoz. She currently serves as senior vice president for the Office of Research,
Advocacy, and Legislation at the National Council of La Raza. The National Council of La Raza
makes LULAC look reasonable. These folks are amnesty fetishists. Cecilia Muñoz, in her
post, [reading] "advocated for federal legislation to give the estimated 12 million" -- this from
CNS News, Penny Starr has the byline -- and I guess the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants
-- yeah, that's estimated by people who lowball that figure -- to give them [reading] "a path to
citizenship." And she has been tapped for the job of director of Intergovernmental Affairs.
And again, it's funny -- I just offer this not to raise an eyebrow, I mean, hello, it's a fan of
amnesty in the Obama administration. Whoa, that's shocking. This is what you get. I love the
emails that I sometimes get. "Mark, I'm concerned that Janet Napolitano will not be, you know,
strong enough on our borders." Really? Really? Well, if enough Americans had been concerned about
that, they would not have voted for Senator Obama. Of course, no -- no Homeland Security chief
under President Obama is going to be ardent enough about protecting our borders. It's only in the
last 18 months that President Bush's Homeland Security chief has been ardent enough about our
borders.

 Finally, someone at
the Punisher: War Zone premiere asked
Lexi Alexander the big question -- what the hell
was all that "taking your name off the film" talk? Give a hand to SciFi Wire for doing so.
Alexander's answer managed to confirm and deny the post-ComicCon drama that surrounded
Punisher: War Zone. "No, no, I never was going to take my name off the film. Let me say
this. Harry Knowles [of Ain't It Cool News] is one of the greatest people I know. He's a great
supporter of mine. I'm his biggest fan, not because he supports filmmakers, [but] because I think
he fights for film ... I think in this case, what happened is when the first trailers came out, I
think he knew and he's been told there was kind of trouble. So he wrote, "F--k, they should have
just let her do it, and she was pushed aside." [That is] true. He did write the right thing, and he
stood up for me and for this film. I think that each Internet site that took it on brought it to a
new level ... [What Knowles wrote] really is the correct thing. I was never fired, and I never
wanted to take my name off. "
What Knowles wrote (if I have the right piece) was this: "Lexi Alexander has been kicked to the
curb -- part of that treatment was her "honeymoon" from Comic Con. However, there's more totally
awesome wedding gifts that Lionsgate has given the blushing bride. She's off the movie and wrapped
up in a non-disclosure clause - so we won't be hearing from her anytime soon, UNLESS THINGS CHANGE
RADICALLY." That explains the deafening silence -- though I'm curious how one can be "pushed
aside," yet remain unfired. However that works, it's clear Alexander kicked ass, made the
Punisher she wanted, and is getting rave reviews from the film geeks for her trouble.
There's nothing like a happy ending.

England because apparently they have the good weed. Everybody in these pictures is stoned off their

The venerable New York Review of Books was launched amidst a newspaper strike in the winter of
1963, and has continued unabated ever since. Devoted to intensive and nuanced coverage of politics,
the arts, literature, science (and now movies and the Internet!), the paper, as it’s called,
is considered to be the premiere journal of the American intellectual elite. nbsp; Robert Silvers,
its longtime editor, who shared the post with Barbara Epstein until her death in 2006, spoke with
ThoughtCast in the WNYC studios in New York. nbsp; nbsp; 40 min. podcast
