CogTool 1.1.3
CogTool... Designers want to know how users will interact with their systems,
but they often do not have the time or resources to test their designs with actual users. This is
especially true for systems intended for trained users. It can be expensive to train users with a
prototype, but unskilled users do not interact with a product in the same way as a skilled user.
Cognitive performance modeling aims to solve this problem by predicting how a skilled user will
interact with a system. Simulation and analysis take the place of expensive training and testing.
Predictive human performance modeling has one of the longest research histories in Human-Computer
Interaction. Starting with Card, Moran, and Newell in the 1980s, the prediction of skilled
performance time has enjoyed a constant stream of validation and expansion into many areas of
user interaction with computers. Over one hundred research papers have been published about GOMS
and the Keystroke-Level Model (KLM). Given its validity and predictive value, it is surprising
that modeling has not become widespread as a tool for design in the user experience community.
Our belief is that the cost of learning and constructing correct models, even ones as simple as
the KLM, is perceived to be too high to justify the benefits of estimating skilled performance
times.
We don't believe that this has to be true. With the support of tools, the time and training costs
of performance modeling can be greatly reduced, and the accuracy of resulting models can be
increased. Our project has produced a software application that takes the first steps toward
these goals. We have already achieved great reductions in the time to produce new KLM-GOMS
models. We have also shown an improvement in the accuracy of predictions compared to previously
published examples of KLM.
Detailed information is provided in the CogTool User Guide. We
highly recommend that you read this guide to get the most out of the CogTool system.
To help you get started quickly with CogTool, we have also provided a Tutorial. This document walks
you through an example in detail, but it is not as comprehensive as the CogTool User Guide and it
refers to the CogTool User Guide, so you need both.
The ability to execute task models integrated with driving is not available in the current
version. If your primary interest is models integrated with driving, you may still use the
old version, which requires a
Mac OS X system (but does not run on Intel Macs).
WHAT'S NEWVersion 1.1.3: Release notes were unavailable when this listing was updated.

suraj.sun tips a report up at CNet which begins: "Browser makers, grappling with outmoded
technology and a vision to rebuild the Web as a foundation for applications, have begun converging
on a seemingly basic but very important element of cloud computing. That ability is called local
storage, and the new mechanism is called Indexed DB. Indexed DB, proposed by Oracle and initially
called WebSimpleDB, is largely just a prototype at this stage, not something Web programmers can
use yet. But already it's won endorsements from Microsoft, Mozilla, and Google, and together,
Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome account for more than 90 percent of the usage on the Net
today. 'Indexed DB is interesting to both Firefox and Microsoft, so if we get to the point where we
prototype it and want to ship it, it will have very wide availability,' said Chris Blizzard,
director of evangelism for Mozilla. ... Microsoft publicly endorsed Indexed DB on its IE blog:
'Together with Mozilla, we're excited about a new design for local storage called Indexed DB. We
think this is a great solution for the Web,' said program manager Adrian Bateman."

And just like that, today we have the third photo leak of the mysterious BlackBerry slider.
Unlike the first
time we saw it but much like the second, the device
has been placed next to a Curve 8900 for the sake of a size comparison. On its side the slider is
noticeably thicker than the 8900 , but today it has been turned on its side in order to let us
know exactly how thick this sucker is. What this device is actually called is anyone’s
guess, but the general consensus is that this is not the Storm3. So what then is it?
Lately a rumor has been floating around that it is actually a Bold owing to its identical styling
queues to the current Bold 9700. Adding to this rumor is a UAProf found on RIM’s website
for a 9700a that lists a portrait HVGA+ display (as opposed to the Bold 9700’s landscape
HVGA+ display) and this all seems rather possible. Of course dealing with prototypes things can
and will change as needed, so it looks like we’re going to have to twiddle our thumbs a
little while longer until some more information comes to light. Hit the jump for a pic of
device’s rear sans battery cover showing off its brand new F-S1 battery.

Blueprint Magazine describes a very
neat machine:
In a small shed on an industrial park near Pisa is a machine that can print buildings. The
machine itself looks like a prototype for the automotive industry. Four columns independently
support a frame with a single armature on it. Driven by CAD software installed on a dust-covered
computer terminal, the armature moves just millimetres above a pile of sand, expressing a
magnesium-based solution from hundreds of nozzles on its lower side. It makes four passes. The
layer dries and Enrico Dini recalibrates the armature frame. The system deposits the sand and then
inorganic binding ink. The exercise is repeated. The millennia-long process of laying down
sedimentary rock is accelerated into a day. A building emerges. This machine could be used to
construct anything. Dini wants to build a cathedral with it. Or houses on the moon.
What do you think, readers? What would you build with a giant 3D printer that lays down sticky
sand?
