costs in the face of the worsening economy. With most of the cuts occurring this month, the carrier
expects to take a $600 million charge on severance payments and other related costs. ATT didn't
identify what areas would be most affected by the layoffs, but it did say it would be staffing up
in areas such as wireless, video and broadband, though it didn't specify any numerical targets.
Back in April, ATT said it would a

h4But not as crap as 2001/h4 pWhen you are very sick and you are trying to find out what is wrong,
you get a second opinion from another doctor - and so it is with the quarterly market statistics
tracking server shipments and sales. Gartner usually comes first, and then IDC follows in quick
succession with a slightly different set of public stats. Together, the Gartner and IDC figures
give those of us on the outside of vendor walls a sense of how healthy or sick the server business
is..../p

Times (NYT) is a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/11/cash-crunch-at-new-york-times-nyt-400-million-due-in-may"running
on fumes/a. And one of the challenges the company faces in trying to avoid bankruptcy is that
shutting-down money-losing operations actually costs money./p pFor example, shutting down some New
York distribution operations, which the NYT announced it would do in early September, will cost
about $50 million (disclosed in an a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/e/081202/nyt8-k_a.html"8K filing
yesterday/a). The move will eliminate $30 million of losses annually, which is good, but the NYT
can't afford to write $50 million checks these days./p p(To put the $50 million in context, the
company only had $46 million of cash at the end of Q3 and it had to borrow more money to fund its
operations in the quarter.)/p pBottom line, the closure expense, which will presumably hit the
books in Q4 and Q1, will further weaken the company's balance sheet. The NYT says it is working
with creditors to "manage" its debt obligations, but it has yet to explain how it plans to come up
with the $400 million it needs to pony up in May./p p style="padding-left: 30px;"On September 8,
2008, the Company announced that, in January 2009, it will close City Suburban, its distribution
organization that delivers The New York Times and other newspapers and magazines to newsstands and
retail outlets in the New York metropolitan region. Going forward, The New York Times will be
distributed to newsstand and retail outlets through a combination of third-party wholesalers and
the Company's own drivers./p p style="padding-left: 30px;"Approximately strong530 full-time
equivalent employees will be affected by the closure and the Company plans to provide severance
packages to them/strong. On November 25, 2008, members of the drivers' union ratified an agreement
reached between the Company and the union, including severance payments in connection with the
closure./p p style="padding-left: 30px;"As a result, strongthe Company estimates that it will
record total costs of $48 to $53 million in connection with the closure, consisting primarily of
approximately $30 million for staff reduction costs and a $14 million charge related to
above-market operating lease agreements./strong The remainder of the estimated costs are primarily
related to transition costs, accelerated depreciation on certain assets and funding of a union
pension plan. The strongmajority of these costs will be recorded by the end of the Company's 2008
fiscal year-end/strong, with the remainder recorded in the strongfirst quarter of 2009/strong. In
addition, the Company is currently negotiating to sell a City Suburban location that it owns. The
timing of the sale is not currently known./p p style="padding-left: 30px;"The Company expects the
closure of City Suburban to strongimprove the operating results of The New York Times Media Group
by approximately $30 million on an annual basis/strong. This is a result of an estimated decrease
in costs of approximately $120 million to operate City Suburban, offset in part by an estimated
decrease in revenue of approximately $90 million. The revenue decrease is expected to be in other
revenues (from the elimination of delivering third-party publications) and in circulation revenue
(from the sale of The New York Times to wholesale distributors rather than retailers)./p pstrongSee

width="130" height="165" /Nothing says serious about cost cutting and process quite like hiring a
CFO with a black belt in Six Sigma management. With or without the tanking economy, Google (a
href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=GOOG" class="ticker"
title="GOOG"NSDQ: GOOG/a) has been heading towards maturing growth—you can't
keep up triple-digit growth or even double-digits indefinitely—and the addition
of McKinsey vet and Bell Canada planning exec Patrick Pichette as CFO a
href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-industry-moves-google-imports-new-cfo-pichette-from-bell-canada"in
August/a was one sign that cost containment was on the way. The slowing of online ad growth coupled
with the unexpected speed of the economic downturn has only accelerated Google's need to show
maturity of a different sort. That would explain tonight's a
href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122826503489174369.html?mod=yahoo_hsru=yahoo" title="long WSJ
article"long WSJ article/a about how Google is taking the responsible approach by cutting back on
its ubiquitous product approach—along with some of the food perks and redundant
offices. CEO Eric Schmidt told the Journal Google has to "behave as though we don't know" what's
coming. That means cutting what Schmidt calls the "dark matter"—"projects that
'haven't really caught on' and 'aren't really that exciting.'" Engineers may still get their 20
percent time but staffing and resources for their projects, particularly those without signs of
real revenue potential, will be much harder to come by. Google needs hits that make money, not just
headlines. /p p -- bNarrow investment focus/b: The top priorities include display and mobile
advertising and Google Apps. Schmidt told the Journal engineers and sales resources are being
diverted to those areas. The paper reports that projects at risk include Google Notebook and Google
Audio Indexing. /p p -- bAdding ads/b: Google hasn't started selling the classic front
page—some of the most expensive real estate left online. But it has added
advertising to Google Finance and will add it in some parts of Google News. /p p -- bHiring
(firing)/b:nbsp; Hiring continues but at a much slower pace. Google execs said this fall that the
company would cut back on contract workers, then numbering about 10,000. Still no specifics.nbsp;

alt="blackberry-storm-vzw.jpg" title="blackberry-storm-vzw.jpg" width="216" height="370" /Good news
and bad news from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion: Way after hours at 9:35 p.m., the company a
href="http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/081202/0457377.html"announced/a that it blew its third quarter. But
RIM (RIMM) says "exceptional" response to its new gadgets led to record subscriber growth at the
end of the quarter./p ul liRIM says Q3 sales will fall between $2.75-$2.78 billion, below consensus
of $2.96 billion and about 9% below its forecasted range of $2.95-$3.10 billion./li liRIM says it
added 2.6 million net new subscribers during the quarter, 10% below its forecast of 2.9 million./li
liWhy? Later than anticipated product launches, the lousy economy, and unfavorable currency
trends./li /ul pBut, on the plus side, RIM says its new Bold and Storm smartphones are seeing an
"exceptional" response:/p p style="padding-left: 30px;"Daily net subscriber account additions
reached a record level on the day the BlackBerry Storm launched in the United States and RIM
achieved a record number of weekly net subscriber account additions during the last week of the
third quarter. The strong demand for new products has continued into Q4 and RIM is working closely
with its partners to deliver sufficient product to take advantage of the growth opportunity in Q4
and beyond./p pThe touchscreen BlackBerry Storm is still backordered at Verizon Wireless. It'll be
crucial for RIM to meet demand there in the next few weeks or it could lose potential buyers to
Apple's (AAPL) iPhone -- which would be bad news for Verizon (VZ)./p pRIM's after-hours charts
haven't updated on Google or Yahoo, but we wouldn't be surprised to see its stock open lower
Wednesday. Investors have been preparing for bad news from RIM, but its Q3 revenue will come in
below even the Street's most pessimistic analyst./p pNext update will be Dec. 18, when the company
posts final Q3 results and gives Q4 guidance./p pstrongSee Also:/strongbr /a

Atari is banking on Tetsuya Mizuguchi's next project, a music game with the working title
" QJ," to reestablish the celebrated developer at the top of his, uh, game -- or
to strike a chord with Wii owners, at least. The publisher announced today that it will bring Q
Entertainment's QJ to Wii, but omitted further details. Marching behind a string of
Lumines sequels, Mizuguchi has stumbled
offbeat with his last several experiments, including Ninety-Nine Nights, Gunpey
and Every Extend Extra Extreme. But QJ's music foundation suggests that Mizuguchi could be drumming up renewed inspiration from
his own cult classic, Space Channel 5.
Additionally, Atari announced the Q3 ("Cubed") compilation disc for Xbox 360, which will
include Mizuguchi's XBLA games: Every Extend
Extra Extreme, Lumines Live and Rez HD, along with all released DLC. The collection
has been given a tentative price of €30 (roughly $40) and has yet to be dated for release.
