It may not
have been as polished as his later works Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums, but
Wes Anderson's film debut, Bottle Rocket, brimmed with a beautiful brand of naivete not
concentrated as strongly in his later films.
One reason for this is the film's excellent
soundtrack. Anderson's movies tend to feature top-notch tunage, but there's something about
those Bottle Rocket songs and Mark Mothersbaugh instrumentals that gives us that "so
fresh" feeling.
But before Bottle Rocket was a feature-length film, it was a 13-minute short film (trailer), with completely different music that
Anderson had hoped to use in the feature, only to be told by the studio that the film should not
feature jazz.
To coincide the release of the Bottle Rocket Criterion Edition, which includes the
original short film version,
Fantasy Records collected the songs from its soundtrack and will release them digitally on
December 9, when the Criterion edition of the film will be released.
"I was listening to a lot of jazz at the time, especially Coltrane's albums on Blue Note and
Sonny Rollins' A Night at the Village Vanguard," stated Anderson. "I was inspired by the
use of American jazz in French new wave movies like Breathless. I still love this
music... The studio didn't want us to use jazz in the feature version. We didn't license a lot of
this music at the time because we couldn't afford it."
Time heals all wounds. Here are two songs from that soundtrack, courtesy of Fantasy Records,
available here as QuickTime streams:
Vince
Guaraldi Trio - "Skating" (from Peanuts, aka Charlie Brown)
Zoot Sims -
"Jane-O"
Other songs included on the short film soundtrack include Artie Shaw's "The Chant," Sonny
Rollins' "Old Devil Moon," Chet Baker & Art Pepper's "The Route," Duke Ellington & John
Coltrane's "Stevie," Art Blakey covering Horace Silver Trio's "Nothing but the Soul" and the
Vince Guaraldi Trio's "Happiness Is."

i've put together a promo video in FCE HD 3.5 and exported as an MPEG-4 and posted on my website
and would like people to stream it or download and watch later. many people are having trouble
viewing it, however, even after installing Quicktime. i would love some advice on what settings to
use for export that will:
-allow most people to watch it
-maintain good quality

I edited a video in FCP and exported it as a quicktime. The resulting file is a little over an
hour, about 13gb in size, and has 14 chapters. The quicktime movie plays perfectly. When I build
the DVD in iDVD it works perfectly. However, once it's burned I lose the audio in the middle of the
13th chapter until the end. I've deleted preferences, re-exported the quicktime, created new DVD
projects, used an older template (I'm now using a version 7 template).... I'm not sure what's going
on! Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have recently been unable to view the Quick/Pro Tips videos on the Apple web site. When I click
on Play the video displays the Apple logo and then stalls at that point. I have repaired
permissions but it made no difference. I am using an iMac and QuickTime Player v.7.5.5
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi all,
I am hoping for a little help here. I would like to make a ringtone for an iphone from the audio of
a quicktime movie.
I havenot figured out how to import just the audio into garageband or export it from imovie.
This should be easy-ish, right?
If I have to, I can rerecord the sound. What would be the best method to do that? (I could use
either the internal mike on a mbp or a voicerecorder on an old ipod).
Cheers,

A colleague and I are attempting to create a screencast using video created with Snapz Pro X. We
successfully, eventually, managed to delete the appropriate frames and merge the clips together (to
the best of our knowledge) and so we decided to export the movie.
We were somewhat less cautious than might have been sensible given it was the first time we were
using this program but as it had taken him a fair amount of hours to get the movie into a useful
state it's not surprising. We clicked file > export movie... and then I believe we got a pop-up
asking us to choose QuickTime or the other option - which is the default. He clicked export and so
our movie was exported in MPeg 4 format.
When we tried to then open the movie it opened in iTunes but, though it played, the whole movie was
just black as if every frame was a black picture. It was precisely the correct length, just
black.
We wondered whether it was a mistake we made so we went back to iMovie and clicked 'export to
QuickTime' this time around and it did indeed open with QuickTime but again it was black.
I thought it might be that the movie had already been saved in the black MPeg 4 state and so we had
just exported the black movie to QuickTime. I'm fairly sure that's the wrong answer and it doesn't
help us understand why it exported a black movie in the first place.
Any help will be much appreciated. Sorry for the long question - I thought it would be better to
give you as many details up front. If we do work it out, I'll post the answer back here too in case
someone else does the same things wrong that we did.
