I want to buy a 17-inch MBP but I am wondering if I should wait until the new one comes out. One
with the updated RAM, frontside bus and video card. I am set on the 17-inch because I want the high
resolution screen. I am not a gamer but I am a big Photoshop user. That said I don't know if I need
the upgraded video card. The RAM and frontside bus would be nice. The other thing is price. With
the discount and rebate the 17-inch MBP is about $2,500 on Amazon.

width="1" height="1" //divpMany shoppers found yesterday that the price at the till was less than
the one on the label, as the cut in VAT came into effect./ppAlistair Darling announced last week
that standard value added tax would be cut from 17.5% to 15% for 13 months, to raise consumer
confidence. The reduction would cost the government pound;12.5bn in lost revenue and retailers
pound;200m as they reprice items./ppShops that have decided to pass on the reduction to consumers
have two weeks to bring labels into line with the prices they charge. Tesco and Sainsbury's dropped
their prices over the weekend, before the official cut. DSG International, which owns Currys and PC
World, cut its prices hours after the chancellor ended his speech./ppOther businesses introduced
the rate yesterday. "Most retailers, particularly major retailers, are passing the VAT cut on to
customers," said a spokesman for the British Retail Consortium. /ppA group of 20 retailers
including MS, Next and Sir Philip Green's Arcadia, said last week they would pass on the reduction.
MS has not reduced advertised prices but customers get the reduced price at tills. At Asda, price
labels on shelves are being changed but reduced VAT will be automatically calculated at checkouts.
Discount store Aldi has already rounded down prices of 350 non-food items (there is no VAT on food)
and 500 "special buys". While gas and electricity are on an unchanged 5% rate, telecoms services
are on standard VAT. BT spent the weekend changing its billing systems so customers would benefit
from yesterday. /ppIts basic broadband was pound;7.95 for the first three months and is now
pound;7.78; its top of the range broadband was pound;23.99 a month and is now pound;23.48. The head
of BT's consumer business, John Petter, said: "We have had a bit of a hectic weekend. It makes for
slightly jagged price points so ... we will probably at some stage tidy up our prices just to get a
sensible price point customers can add up in their heads."/ppVirgin Media cut its call charges
yesterday and hopes to introduce the new rate across all services soon. Any customer inadvertently
overcharged would get a rebate in subsequent bills./ppBT's public payphones have also been changed.
Although the minimum remains 40p, callers get more time, as do mobile customers with top-up cards.
Vodafone and Orange have added 25p-worth of calls to their pound;10 top-up vouchers. Customers who
pay by monthly contract will see VAT fall on their next bill./ppThe price of petrol will not drop.
A spokesman for the AA said that, based on the weekend's average price, the most recent available,
VAT at the new rate accounted for 13.62p of the price of a litre - 1.69p less than it did at 17.5%.
But the government is also raising fuel duty by 2p a litre, so customers lose overall, with an
extra pound;200,000 a day to the Treasury./ppOne filling station began offering fuel with no VAT.
Chris Woodruff, who runs the Jet station in Darsham, Suffolk, claimed his was the cheapest in the
country, at 79.9p a litre for petrol and diesel at 93.9p a litre, for the first 10,000 litres sold:
"We're practically giving it away. It'll probably cost us pound;1,000 in lost profits, but we
wanted to make a point. In rural Suffolk, we don't have a network of public transport, so whenever
the government puts up fuel duty it hits hard."/pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px;

I was wondering if it is possible to move a Drobo back and forth between several Macs? Or are there
preferences or something in Drobo Dashboard that keeps important info, and then make this not an
option?
Also, am I right to assume that when you put your first couple drives in a Drobo, that they have to
be blank/empty and that they have to be formatted by the Drobo software? Or could you put 2 x
1/2full 1TB drives and one blank 1 TB drive in?
Thanks in advance.
Macsales.com (OWC) has some good rebates on Drobo today. I was thinking of getting one.

Since I've converted over to OS X recently I've gotten a lot of help on the different Mac forums
like this one, Macrumors and Macnn. I thought I'd give back to the community after I've lurked
around for awhile.
I thought that it'd be nice to alert everyone to this eBay seller who sells Applecare. I bought it
for my new Aluminum Macbook from them for really cheap after using live.com's 25% cashback.
memorymate, the seller, also has a program where they give 10% direct deposit to buyers if you
mention my eBay ID since I bought it from them as well. This is legitamate, and my friend got
Macbook Pro Applecare for only $130 after all discounts. All you have to do is mention my eBay ID,
portapottyguy, in the comments section when you are checking out. I got my
Applecare for only $95 for the Aluminum Macbook. Don't miss out on this chance! Message me to let
me know if you are going to use my ID to purchase.
They deliver almost immediately by e-mail, and even though most people are wary about e-mailing
Applecare and fraud, they are legit. I can show you a screen shot of my warranty, and you can see
that I actually bought from memorymate.
This is their store:
http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/memory...Q_fromZQQ_mdoZ
When they give you a 10% discount, they do a direct deposit so you lose less than a dollar to
paypal fees, but it doesn't screw up your live.com rebate.
Again, let me know if you have any questions! I just wanted to give back to the community since
Applecare might be one of the best things to get for your Apple computers, but the retail price is
ridiculously high.

I'm looking to pull the trigger on a 24" iMac 2.8. Amazon has it at $1644 (with $100 mail-in

Do you foresee prices dropping between now and Jan 1? Or, should I just purchase now?

vs. 1st gen black MB.
I was an original Macbook owner. I have the black, 2.0Ghz model with integrated video and 2gb ram,
80gb HD etc. from summer/2006.
My fiance needs a new computer, but just for writing and browsing. My thoughts were to give her my
macbook, which is just fine for that.
I don't have a ton of money, but I feel like I would be wasting my time with a new macbook. I am a
pretty heavy CS3 user, as a hobby, but a frequent user nonetheless. I work with a lot of .cr2 raw
files that are all over 10mbs, and my system tends to get quite toasty and sluggish. I also have
recently started using my MB for games, when I have the time, which tend to run like they're stuck
in mud.
I know the new MB's have discrete video and are a significant upgrade over what I have, but I feel
like I'd be better off with a penryn MBP, 2.5Ghz/8600 GT Nvidia, matte screen, either refurbished
from apple for 1499 or NEW from amazon, with a rebate for 1549 from the release before this one.
That was the previous top of the line 15inch MBP. I couldn't possible afford the new MBPs, and I'm
not a huge fan of glossy screens anyway.
I guess what I'm asking is how does the performance compare between those two models (new MB vs
penryn MBP) considering they're essentially the same price.
