height="187" /The Register/a is reporting the a href="http://sl.reuters.com/"Reuters Second Life/a
bureau has closed, and adds about the embedded reporter there:/p p style="padding-left:
30px;"Reports of a marketing evac team swooping in a virtual huey to snatch Eric Reuters from the
firm's Sadville bureau - while harried by squadrons of flying penises and pursued by crazed locals
bent on acts of bestial sexual brutality - could not be confirmed./p pI can add details: For a year
and a half, I reported under the byline a
href="http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/author/eric/""Eric Reuters"/a in Second Life, before
settling in at my new home here at a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/"SAI/a./p pSo what happened?
Is Second Life dying? No, but the buzz is gone. For all the sound and fury over recent a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/10/linden-lab-s-survival-plan-spike-second-life-user-fees"price
hikes/a and a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/11/linden-lab-pulls-back-second-life-price-hikes"layoffs at
Linden Lab/a, Second Life has a community of fanatically loyal users. Since Linden Lab derives its
revenue from user fees, not advertisements, Second Life is much more likely to survive the Web 2.0
shakeout than most other startups./p pIt's hard to say what, if anything, Linden Lab can do to make
Second Life appeal to a general audience. The very things that most appeal to Second Life's
hardcore enthusiasts are either boring or creepy for most people: Spending hundreds of hours of
effort to make insignificant amounts of money selling virtual clothes, experimenting with changing
your gender or species, getting into random conversations with strangers from around the world, or
having pseudo-nonymous sex (and let's not kid ourselves, sex is a huge draw into Second Life). As
part of walking my "beat," I'd get invited by sources to virtual nightclubs, where I'd right-click
the dancefloor to send my avatar gyrating as I sat at home at my computer. It was about as fun as
watching paint dry./p pBut here's how Linden Lab can make Second Life more fun and a better
business:/p ol listrongBuild good newbie-oriented content./strong Linden has always taken the
position they're in the 3D platform business, and can't be expected to build anything with their
own tools or even know what others are doing in Second Life. That argument didn't fly when the a
href="http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2007/08/14/virtual-speakeasies-defy-second-life-gambling-ban/"gambling
scandal/a broke and it doesn't work now. Second Life has a monster learning curve, and Linden Lab
needs to hold new users' hands through every step of their first five or six hours. A big content
push isn't even that expensive: the company has proven a
href="http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/03/03/linden-lab-hiring-up-to-40-part-time-content-creators/"it
can pay Second Lifers $10/hr/a to do these things and have skilled content creators begging for the
job./li listrongAcknowledge that Second Life's reputation is now a liability./strong This isn't the
worst thing in the world, but it does mean Second Life can't sit back and hope word-of-mouth brings
in hordes of new users like it did back in 2006. Second Life needs to advertise, and the ads need
to be hip. New CEO Mark Kingdon has an ad background and should have the right r sum to pull off a
makeover./li listrongRadically simplify the user interface./strong The Second Life UI is a mess,
and there's been no major changes to it in Second Life's 5+ years. Making the Second Life
experience easy-to-use, even graceful, isn't a nice-to-have, it's a business imperative./li
listrongAbandon the idea that Second Life is a a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/10/second-life-offers-business-teleconferencing-now-penis-free"business
app/a./strong I wasn't in Second Life to play, I was there on assignment for Reuters. The login
server would crash. I'd try to reach sources, but Second Life's IM window would hang on "waiting"
all day when trying to figure out who was online. "Teleports" -- the ability to move from point to
point anywhere in Second Life -- would stop working and I'd get locked out of my own office. These
weren't one-offs, they were my daily, first-hand, happens-all-the-time experiences. For all its
bugs, Second Life is tolerable as a playground, but enterprise users will never and should never
use it for business. Re-focus on the core mission: Keeping the hobbyists happy and converting
potential recruits into hardcore (read: fees-paying) users./li /ol pNone of these things will make
Second Life palatable to the general public, but it will draw new traffic and keep a lot more
potential users with the right temperment for Second Life from quitting in frustration on their
first day. That might be enough for the next year or two./p pThere's an incredible depth, passion,
and camaraderie to the Second Life community that more popular online experiences like MySpace or
World of Warcraft can't match. And while I didn't find it compelling, there really is something
awesome about buying be able to "buy" a grid of blank 3D space, mold it like clay into an elven
forest, a futuristic space station, or a bdsm dungeon, and then invite your friends to hang out./p

I just saw this on Attack of the Show, and it seems pretty cool. It's a music streaming website
that's free, and you don't have to register or anything.
Don't think it'll last long though. Someone will be all up in arms about it.

pYahoo (a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=YHOO" class="ticker"
title="YHOO"NSDQ: YHOO/a), which has been trying to sell off its European comparison shopping
service a href="http://kelkoo.com/" title="Kelkoo"Kelkoo/a for a while now, has finally found a
buyer, according to a
href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/21/yahoo-finally-sells-kelkoo-and-brings-cash-in/" title="a
report"a report/a: it has been sold to a little-known UK-based private equity firm called Jamplant,
for something less than euro 100 million ($126 million). Yahoo bought the service in 2004 for a
price then of about 475 million euros (now $598 million). Also, the founder and ex-CEO of Kelkoo
Pierre Chappaz wrote a href="http://www.kelblog.com/2008/11/kelkoo-quitte-yahoo.html" title="about
the deal"about the deal/a (in French) on his blog strikebut again, Yahoo hasn't said anything yet

sell-off came when a

title="Yahoo re-tooled Kelkoo's Grenoble, France, HQ"Yahoo re-tooled Kelkoo's Grenoble, France,
HQ/a in September as an RD centre. Chappaz refused to name the price but said it was "below 100
million euros" - that means Yahoo makes a loss of at least 375 million ($472 million) euros (not
including any profits in made in that time, of course). Chappaz said: "The difference is the price
of management incompetence that led Yahoo's (stock price to fall) below $9." /p p Never heard of
Jamplant? You're not alone. Chappaz said it's a new investment unit created by the founders of that
other price comparison site USwitch, which sold to E.W. Scripps (a

standalone company. /p pKelkoo has 270 staff in Grenoble and in London. Its latest business
involved powering a white-label price comparison site for ITV (LSE: ITV) and similar deals with The
Independent. Chappaz: "During the past year, several funds approached me to restart Kelkoo with
them. I told them no. Despite my commitment to Kelkoo, I would prefer to devote myself to Wikio.
The sell-off of Kelkoo by Yahoo ... after the failed agreement with Google (a

br /What it doesbr /br /The tagline of this search engine is “Exposing the hidden
jobs”, and it aims to emphasize the essence of the search process in question. According to
the site, the percentage of unadvertised jobs is stationed at no less than 70 %, and the aim of
LinkUp is scouring the jobs listed on corporate websites, saving the user both time and procedural
headaches. br brSmall, mid-sized and large companies are then screened in order to come up with
fresh and up-to-date career opportunities. The latter aspect is important, as there are many job
search engines that include postings that are outdated and obsolete. br brOf course, there is also
a section of the site that caters for those who wish to advertise jobs directly on the website.
This is part of the navigation menu that can be located at the bottom of the page, a menu which
also includes items like “Browse Jobs” and “Top Employers”. br brAll in
all, the site stands as a useful resource that intends to makes life easier for those on the
lookout for employment opportunities. You can check it out for yourself at www.linkup.com. brbr /br

My apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum, but I figured since this was related to Keychain
Access that the OS X forum would do.
I've successfully installed my digital ID on my MacBook, but when I copied the file to my iMac and
tried to install it, it doesn't register as my personal certificate. Therefore, I can't
sign/encrypt email sent from my iMac.
I also tried to redownload the digital ID directly from my iMac. Didn't work.
Any suggestions?

Spyre, et al (all our intrepid ATI beta testers who are here to listen)
It is obvious by now that there is a serious problem with cat 8.11 and a pair of 4850s in
Xfire.
There have been many who complained of this in the main 8.11 thread. I decided to do some further
testing, and was able to replicate it on several motherboards, as well as with clean, and existing
installs.
The first set of tests, I had a pair of 4850s (reference design, bone stock, Asus labels) running
in xfire in a Gigabyte MA780G-DS3H (780G) mobo. With an existing install (cat 8.10 with the
hotfix), I tried both a clean install (using the uninstall manager, then driver cleaner), and upon
boot, made it to the little vista circle that shines, then a BSOD and the atimkdag
I also rolled back and tried installiing directly OVER the same 8.10 with hotfix, and that was even
more of a trainwreck, as obviously the hotfix doesn't register properly with its .Net database, and
windows. This yielded a completely roached machine that was rolled back in safe mode.
I then did move the boards to an Asus M3A78-T (790GX mobo) and did a complete fresh install of
Vista 32, did windows update, then did a clean install of the 8.11 package (Cat software suite) and
not only did it BSOD after the vista glow thingy, but it also did not see the northbridge, nor the
IDE controller.
So in all cases, there seems to be clearly be a problem with 8.11 and the 4850s. Dunno what else to
do at this point.
It is also clear that there is some wierdness with the 8.10 hotfix as it concerns registration and
what Vista as well as ATI install utility think is installed. Its definitely a somewhat dirty
install.

Motivation: Most genotyping technologies for single nucleotide polymorphism
(SNP) markers use standard clustering methods to ‘call’ the SNP genotypes. These
methods are not always optimal in distinguishing the genotype clusters of a SNP because they do
not take advantage of specific features of the genotype calling problem. In particular, when
family data are available, pedigree information is ignored. Furthermore, prior information about
the distribution of the measurements for each cluster can be used to choose an appropriate
model-based clustering method and can significantly improve the genotype calls. One special
genotyping problem that has never been discussed in the literature is that of genotyping of
trisomic individuals, such as individuals with Down syndrome. Calling trisomic genotypes is a
more complicated problem, and the addition of external information becomes very important.
Results: In this article, we discuss the impact of incorporating external
information into clustering algorithms to call the genotypes for both disomic and trisomic data.
We also propose two new methods to call genotypes using family data. One is a modification of the
K-means method and uses the pedigree information by updating all members of a family
together. The other is a likelihood-based method that combines the Gaussian or beta-mixture model
with pedigree information. We compare the performance of these two methods and some other
existing methods using simulation studies. We also compare the performance of these methods on a
real dataset generated by the Illumina platform (www.illumina.com).
Availability: The R code for the family-based genotype calling methods
(SNPCaller) is available to be downloaded from the following website:

Supplementary information: Supplementary data are available at

I recently saw a TV add for phone service using what looks like a bluetooth key plugged into any
computer to get free local and domestic long distance for about $40 the first year and then $20
each year thereafter. Since my IMAC already has bluetooth I was wondering if there was some way I
can plug a phone into my computer to make free calls? If you are doing this, can you explain how
you are doing it? Does it work with cell phones or do you need a phone with a regular phone jack?
Do you need to register your phone number somewhere to keep your existing phone number?
I've heard of people using a computer to make phone calls for years but never understood how they
are doing it. Thanks for the help!

You log into the iTunes Store. You buy music. It only plays on your authorized computers. In theory
this helps keep illegal distribution of music over the internet down but in reality it is just a
hinderance to everyday users that are required to register their iPhones and iPods and computers to
play their own files that they legally own.
Apple started catching onto the idea that this whole DRM music thing isn't a concept to be
continuing into the future and reached an agreement with the label EMI last May and starting the
"iTunes Plus" service allowing purchase of DRM free music from the iTunes store. Since then EMI
along with other major labels like Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony BMG have
started offering their music DRM free via routes other than iTunes like Napster, Amazon, and
MySpace music.
While the iTunes store doesn't seem to be doing half bad in sales in the last year Apple needs to
make the move to DRM free music across all of its..

It's raining in the Middle East and bloggers are taking to their keyboards to register their
thoughts at the change in climate.
We kick off our round up with Stilettos
in the Sand from Saudi Arabia, who writes:
We are in for heavy rain. It has rained quite hard in other parts of the Sandbox, but we've
gotten only a few drops and sprinkles, here. Rain is good. We look forward to it and relish it. A
good rain cleanses everything and turns the trees green and lush - so much prettier than the tan
and gray we are so used to and it controls the dust. If it is overcast all day today and we
finally get some rain you will hear no complaining from me!
Our second stop is in Libya, where Khadija Teri welcomes
the rain too. She notes:
The rains have finally come, accompanied by lightening and thunder. The weather is cooler and the
dust has settled. We'll see how treacherous the roads are today. Usually the first big rains
bring on flooding because the drain systems in the roads are clogged with sand and garbage. But
never mind - no one expects anyone to be on time in weather like this.
Speaking of treacherous roads, Seabee, from Dubai, United
Arab Emirates, is happy that this year rain wasn't blamed for road accidents, but that the
drivers were.
Here's a picture taken by Seabee showing the dark clouds which gathered in Dubai's sky:
When the first drops fell from the sky, Seabee predicted that
the rain will be blamed:
Woke up this morning to a strange darkness, peered out and saw gray clouds and wet ground.
We had the first rain of the season.
So here's a prediction.
Tomorrow's papers will report chaos on the roads, including multiple crashes.
The rain will be to blame.
Motorists will be exonerated. Driving inappropriately in the conditions will not be the
cause.
The rain dunnit.
Kuwait too had a change in weather and intlxpatr,
who reports that the mornings are chilly, posts this picture of the light fluffy skies which have
gathered in the sky, signaling some rain:
From Israel, Dr Savta
also reports nicer weather.
Lately the weather has been beautiful. Yes, even those couple of days of rain were beautiful. The
heat of the summer is gone and it’s still warm enough to go out without a sweater. If it
were only like this all year round!
But for one Israeli mother, A
Soldier's Mother, the rains summon a different feeling. She writes:
Now, the rain means Elie and the soldiers are probably wet; the winter means they may be cold;
the summer means they are hot and likely uncomfortable. I've always loved thunder and lightning,
the power of the storm fills me with awe. But the world of wind and rain is less friendly when
you have a son outside in it.
