width="1" height="1" //divpOne of Prince Charles's allies in his battle against modern architecture
has attacked the "disappointing to dismal" design of British postwar towns./ppSparking anger among
architects, Andres Duany flew in from America and yesterday unveiled a 64-point litany of mistakes
made by British architects and planners over the last 50 years. /ppHe accused architects of being
"infantile" in pursuing ego-driven visions and said they were "heedless of technical and social
dysfunction and widespread lack of popularity" caused by their designs./ppDuany is one of the
original designers of Poundbury, the prince's new town in Dorset, and said the leading lights of
modernist architecture including Richard Rogers, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Peter Eisenman were
"increasingly irrelevant"./ppHe called on architects and planners to step aside and allow a new
generation of amateurs to lead development in the 21st century. /ppThe broadside was met by a
vociferous response from leading modern architects who have become used to regular disputes with
the prince and his allies. Sunand Prasad, president of the Royal Institute of British Architects,
said Duany was "living in another world"./ppHe conceded that architects' craft skills and
traditional knowledge had been swept aside too easily between the 1950s and 1970s, but said
architects were now building the "highest performance" buildings ever./ppDuany's outburst, will
reignite a battle between architects who believe in modernism and his own "church" of new urbanism,
which argues that towns should be built to strict codes, often based on traditional design./ppDuany
used new urbanism to design Seaside, the Florida community which provided the backdrop to the film
The Truman Show, and Charles has embraced the principles of new urbanism on projects to design new
settlements from Newquay, Cornwall to Llandarcy, near Neath. /ppHis intervention was timed to
coincide with the unveiling of a masterplan for Hertfordshire, his most ambitious UK scheme yet. In
it he advocates a new town and a series of garden villages built on open land in which residents
would be obliged to grow fruit and vegetables for market./pp"It is inexplicable why architects and
planners continue to pursue radical innovation as if it were 1945 every morning," he said./pp"Only
architecture, confusing itself with fashion as a platform for cultural expression, continues to be
avant garde, heedless of its cost overruns, social and technical dysfunction and widespread lack of
popularity."/ppHe cited "gratuitous shapes" in buildings such as winged roofs which quickly go out
of fashion, "amazingly rude" colours on shop signs which "are just a vulgar way to attract
attention" and civic buildings that "look common" when they should be grand./ppOut-of-town retail
parks, excessive road signage and "placeless architecture that could be anywhere in the world" were
also criticised. Duany advocates a return to "matter of fact architecture" as exemplified by the
traditional English village. /ppPrasad said it was "obviously untrue" that the majority of
architects want to express themselves regardless of context. "It is not so much the innovation and
the ego that is causing the problem," he said. /pp"It is the commercial pressure to build large on
sites which can't take it; it is the haphazard development of towns and the widespread confusion
over our democratic planning process."/ppPrasad said many of Duany's complaints seemed to stem from
the decision to build a car-based society, and the way highways engineers took control of urban
design./pp"It was wrong to aim for a society dominated by cars," he said. /pp"But most architects
and planners have moved on, so he is really railing against a problem that doesn't exist
anymore."/ph2What not to do/h2p· Avoid fashionable architecture - buildings that are
obsessively of our time will be out of date too soon/pp· Civic buildings should be grand and
private buildings should recede into the background/pp· Avoid overly transparent facades -
mess inside a building looks like an unkempt yard/pp· Avoid many buildings by one designer -
diversity is the hallmark of a great place/pp· Avoid meandering streets - excessive curves
confuse and aggravate/pp· Avoid gated-off estates - they undermine social
interaction/pp· Avoid businesses in the suburbs - every job means one less person to enliven
a town centre/pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

RESIDENTS: The city has decided to implement the much-discussed program of enlivening facades.
Houses will stay as they are, at their core, but individual facades will be created to reflect the
spirit of that house, however the community organizer sees that spirit. Some will look like a
haunted mansion from a cartoon, some like an Arabian palace, others like a cloud city, some houses
will just look like a giant vegetable. You can contact your community organizer if you wish to
volunteer your time, but be aware that these facades will be implemented with or without your help.
Some houses will be harder to get into, some will be near impossible, but the benefits will be
apparent once the program has been fully implemented. Oh my goodness, yes, there will be so many
interesting ones. A western saloon, a microwave, an Arthurian castle, a ski hill, a beautiful

Tectoy, the company that brought licensed Sega games to Brazil, designed a console specifically for
emerging markets. The Zeebo gives users access to a library of games that they can download for a
fee, a plan Tectoy believes will thwart piracy problems. Tectoy has more companies than Sega
signing up to have their games distributed via the Zeebo too. A product list on the Zeebo page
shows Namco Bandai and Capcom supporting the Zeebo with a handful of titles. Tekken 2, Street
Fighter Alpha, Sonic Adventure, and a mysterious version of Double Dragon are slated to come out on
the console. Resident Evil 4 is sort of on the list too since you can see a link to a broken image
in Tectoy’s HTML code, but the linked image says Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition. What?
One possibility is TecToy is distributing PC versions of these games since Resident Evil 4 and
Sonic Adventure have PC ports. However, games like Alpine Racer 3 and Tekken 2 don’t. TecToy
could distribute PlayStation ports, but that would require emulation for PsOne and PS2 games.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Tectoy tackles the problem or if they’re going
to use fancy mobile phone ports of console games like they’re doing with the Sims. Sure, all
of these games are ”last-gen”, but Tectoy’s distribution
mechanism is so unusual it’s rather interesting. The Zeebo is close to a tangible version of
the Phantom console.
Update: A tipster who wishes to remain anonymous shed some more light on the Zeebo system. The
console uses BREW, a platform for mobile phone games and some of the titles listed like Ridge Racer
and Pac-Mania are reportedly mobile phone games. Resident Evil 4 has a mobile phone version too so
it’s quite possible that version will be distributed on the Zeebo. Some of the Zeebo mobile
phone ports will be changed with new user interfaces, but it looks like the Zeebo is going to
primarily deliver mobile phone games to a TV probably not near you.

pCapcom has introduced a new wedge between PS3 and Xbox 360 camps by announcing different Limited
Edition versions of its 2009 surefire hit, Resident Evil 5, for both consoles. Both Limited Edition
versions will come in an extra large box (compared to the regular version, of course), where inside
gamers will find a 2GB USB flash drive that is specially designed after a game item, a 32-page
color art book and a waist pouch in the form of yet another in-game item. The Xbox 360 ldquo;Deluxe
Editionrdquo; will boast a metal case and soundtrack CD, while PS3 owners can benefit from a
making-of extra on the game disc itself. According to Capcom, this is no amateurish outing as it
has been produced with ldquo;Hollywoodrdquo; expertise, rendering the disc the ldquo;worldrsquo;s
first PS3 game software/Blu-ray video hybridrdquo;. Which Limited Edition would you rather root
for, and will it influence your console purchase if you haven't yet done so already?/p pPermalink:

Anti-government protesters are still occupying Bangkok’s two major airports.
Thailand’s tourism officials have estimated that 240,000 passengers are still stranded in
the country.
Initial flight
schedules have been released for stranded passengers. Tourists who want to leave Thailand are
embarking on a bus trip towards
Malaysia even if they will have to pass Thailand’s southern provinces, where an
insurgency exists.
As expected, Thailand’s highest Court found the ruling party guilty of
electoral fraud. What is the implication of the order? The ruling party is disbanded, the
Prime Minister could no longer hold public office, and other party leaders are barred from
holding a public office for five years. A caretaker
Cabinet is now in charge of Thailand, led by Deputy Prime Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul. Out
of 34 cabinet ministers, only 12 have been banned from holding public offices. The remaining 22
can continue to govern until a new Cabinet is ready.

Deputy Prime Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul. Photo credit:
Thai Photoblogs
Since the Prime Minister has stepped down already, will the protesters finally leave the
airports? No. They do not want to recognize the authority of the caretaker Cabinet. So they
remain in control of the airports. The protests continue.
It is clear by now that the airport siege orchestrated by the People’s Alliance for
Democracy (PAD) is supported by Bangkok’s business elite and the military. There is
no
shortage of food for the more or less 15,000 PAD members in the airports. It was also
reported that 5,000 blankets were donated to PAD a few days ago.
Even the police forces are not too determined to disperse the protesters. They seem contented to
drop
fliers from helicopters onto the Bangkok airports ordering PAD to leave the premises.
In his final message as Thailand’s leader, the ex-Prime Minister declared: “I did my
best to administer the country.” Thailand Crisis reacts:
“By traveling to Peru for one week, in full national crisis, to attend a totally useless
APEC meeting? By hidding in Chiang Mai, afraid of his own shadow, afraid of the army? Sure he did
his very best. Thaksin’s brother-in-law will remain one of the
dullest Thai Prime Minister ever.”
While the Court was delivering its decision, government supporters were outside the building. The
crowd did not like the Court’s decision. Nirmal Ghosh observes:
“Disbelief, disappointment as dissolution handed down on PPP (People Power Party). Some
people are boo-ing. The verdict is photocopied and distributed. One woman snatches it from
another and crumples it, throws it on the ground & stamps on it. There is a sense of
deflation in the crowd; they seem rudderless.”
The airport chaos is hurting Thailand’s tourism industry, even the economy of its neighbors. But it
must be pointed out that ordinary persons, Thais and foreigners, are suffering more. Tourists are
stranded; Bangkok residents are losing their jobs, especially those who are working in the
airports. Thai Tales had a conversation with a travel
agent:
“Today I walked past my travel agent on the way to lunch. She said that she would be paid
half her salary this month and that the travel agency could close if the situation continued.
But, she said, her plan was to sell iced coffee from a cart if she was no longer a travel agent.
“The fallout may indeed be incalculable, but when it’s people you know, people who
make your life a bit easier by being good at their jobs and a bit more pleasant by just being in
it, the costs suddenly become measurable and terrible.”
Nomadic Matt, who works in the airport, has lost his
job:
“The damage is done though. There will be no high season this year and an expected 1
million people will be out of work because of the drop in tourism numbers (including me as I work
at the airport!!!!). No one is going to want to come visit now. Most tourists are canceling their
vacations and many that are interviewed just want to leave and never come back.”
To avoid being beaten by partisans, Richard Barrow could not wear red
or yellow T-shirts outside his house. Red is the color of government supporters; and yellow
is PAD’s color:
“I had to pop out just now in the car to go and run an errand in town. I forgot I was
wearing a yellow shirt as today is Monday. I hadn't change after coming back from school. My
neighbor was really scared for me and told me that I should go back and change first. Things are
getting scary on the streets. Hardly anyone wears yellow these days. And if they do, then only on
Mondays. Hardly any teacher at my school wears yellow in case they are associated with the PAD.
Some parents told me that they told their children not to wear red or yellow when they go out any
more. What my neighbor said to me is true. In particular if I go out late at night. This is how
bad it is getting on the streets these days.”

Political cartoons by Sacravatoons
Traffic around the airport has deteriorated. Dreaming of Hanoi writes:
“My day-to-day life has not been affected. Work is normal, as is my social life...Our
school is nearer to the airport, and it seemed like there was a mass exodus into Bangkok from
that direction. The highway was clogged. We had to hop out of the taxi and walk all the way to
Sukhumvit. We then took motorcycles home. This trip usually takes 30 mins, but on Friday night it
took over an hour; I’m sure it took even longer for those who chose to sit and wait in the
traffic.”
Recognizing that ordinary persons are suffering, Brit in Bangkok
criticizes the elite:
“The ones who I feel sorry for though are the ‘average' Thais and not the wealthy
Thais that are destroying this country and trying to take democracy away from normal people.
Meanwhile, I'm making sure that all my purchases from now on will be from market stalls as much
as possible, in an attempt to support every day Thais and not these wealthy as*holes that run
this country. The less money these jokers have the better and, from now on, I'm going to make
sure they get none of mine.”
Andrew Biggs has a message for both the
politcians and protesters:
“What has happened to my beloved Thailand? If you truly love Thailand, you should not be
wearing yellow or red. We are past that. It was cute six months ago but it is deadly now. It
doesn’t matter if you hate or support the government. Let’s stop this madness.
Somchai, resign. PAD, get out of the airport.”
Via Twitter, Bangkok residents are reacting to the latest updates:
Secadra: Protesters
still there and the pro-gov aren't happy with the decision. Not much happens in a rush
Charlespulaski: Thai
court orders ruling party dissolved What kind of Mickey Mouse Democracy is this? Can they even do
that?
Nomadicmatt:
Well, once they open up that damn airport, I'll be moving….where should i go?
Badtzrawks:
excitement?!?! man, it doesnt seem that PAD will return us our airports loey ah' no sign!!
Noobam: I'm a PAD too
but I don't agree with the strike at the airport at all. Esp. with bullshit govt like this

has announced that PS3 units in Japan will be getting a freebie disc containing demos and trailers
from the PSN.brbrThe immediate benefit, of course, is that the new PS3 owner doesn't have to go
online and download all of the content from PSN. Some choice slabs of meat were compiled and put on
discs for the users' convenience.brbrThere are two kinds of discs to choose from: the red disc is
for general content, while the white one is for mature audiences. Strange why the span

content.brbrWhile everything on the discs are already available on PSN, here's something
interesting. Apparently, the span style="font-style: italic;"RE5/span demo is not exclusive to the
Xbox 360 in Japan. It's now part of the White Disc!brbrRed Disc (Family Friendly)brullia
