Looks like the kids at T-Mobile USA are well aware that their company's future will
depend on offering both compelling
handsets and a
competitive network for them to ride on. Reuters reports that the Deutsche Telekom
subsidiary has been exploring all its options with regard to the provision of 4G services,
including potential joint ventures with cable companies and even spectrum sharing with AT&T,
though the likeliest candidate for the moment remains Clearwire's
WiMAX infrastructure. Asked about a potential merger with Sprint, who controls 51 percent of
Clearwire, T-Mobile's CEO Robert Dotson declined the idea, explaining that "what you never want to
do is take one company that is going through challenges and take another company going through
challenges." Reports of ongoing discussions between Clearwire and T-Mo have been around since last
September, and the latest from Dotson suggests that his company is keen to get a resolution either
way as soon as possible.

AppleInsider has rounded up its stable of "people familiar with the matter" and
squeezed them for info on Cupertino's plans for the near term. Firstly, they've heard that a
27-inch version of the currently available 24-inch LED Cinema
Display is on its way, sporting a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and targeted for release "by June."
The more exciting tip from those in the know, however, relates to the well aged Mac Pro and its
future upgrade path. Apple has apparently firmed up plans to offer 6- and 12-core options (to
replace the current 4- and 8-core variants), though the star of the show internally is said to be
Intel's
Xeon 5600, rather than the similarly specced Core
i7-980X that had been rumored. This seems to be motivated by the fact the i7 beast can't do
dual-CPU configurations, which are necessary to offer a dozen cores. Pricing for the single Xeon
CPU model is expected to be close to the current $2,499 starting sticker, but release dates still
elude us.

The analysis of cancer genomes has benefited from the advances in technology that enable data to be
generated on an unprecedented scale, describing a tumour genome’s sequence and composition at
increasingly high resolution and reducing cost. This progress is likely to increase further over
the coming years as next-generation sequencing approaches are applied to the study of cancer
genomes, in tandem with large-scale efforts such as the Cancer Genome Atlas and recently announced
International Cancer Genome Consortium efforts to complement those already established such as the
Sanger Institute Cancer Genome Project. This presents challenges for the cancer researcher and the
research community in general, in terms of analysing the data generated in one’s own projects
and also in coordinating and interrogating data that are publicly available. This review aims to
provide a brief overview of some of the main informatics resources currently available and their
use, and some of the informatics approaches that may be applied in the study of cancer genomes.

Communiqué de Presse
JVC Professional Products, division of JVC U.S.A., today announced the new, 10 MegaPixel
DLA-SH7NLG, a 4K D-ILA projector incorporating three 1.27-inch 4K2K D-ILA display devices for
high-quality imaging and dual ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps for 5,000 ANSI lumens of
brightness. Combining superb definition and resolution with low-cost maintenance, the 4K2K D-ILA
projector is available now and is ideal for planetariums, museums, simulators, and medical
institutions, as well as high-spec design and monitoring facilities.
The new model joins the DLA-SH4K, which debuted in January 2008 as a 4K D-ILA projector and
quickly drew high praise. Like its predecessor, the DLA-SH7NLG achieves ultra-high resolution of
approximately 10 megapixels (4,096 x 2,400), which is five times the resolution of full HD, plus
the projector has a stunning 10,000:1 native contrast ratio.
Notable features of the new DLA-SH7NLG include:
1. With approximately 10 megapixels of resolution, JVC’s 4K2K D-ILA devices can
simultaneously display two or four screens in WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolution. Multi-screen
projection is facilitated by four DVI (Dual-Link) input terminals supporting an array of PC input
formats. The DLA-SH7NLG also offers a low latency mode for simulation environments.
2. True black quality with stunning 10,000:1 native contrast thanks to a wire-grid optical
engine.
3. Dual 330W ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps, producing 5,000 lumens of brightness. In
single lamp mode, the DLA-SH7NLG can automatically choose the lamp with less cumulative operating
time for maintenance efficiency. This, plus the addition of a low-power mode, enable lamp life of
approximately 3,000 hours, which is about double that of conventional projectors. Such features
allow the DLA-SH7NLG to offer low running costs even under heavy professional use.
4. Elaborate design offers operational flexibility, including stacking two projectors to
display 3D images or installation on a +/- 90-degree tilt. The DLA-SH7NLG only weighs about 110
pounds, excluding lens.
5. Three different lenses, including short-focus and telescopic models, are available for
various projection environments.
The DLA-SH7NLG operates on normal AC 100-220V power and consumes less than 1.1 kW.
Convergence can be adjusted to 1/10 pixel accuracy via GUI control, and three gamma tables are
included. Six test patterns, including a crosshatch and color bars, enable image adjustment
without external signal sources.
Projection configuration data is easily stored and uploaded from a USB memory device. The
Ethernet-compatible DLA-SH7NLG can be configured via a PC Web browser, and multiple projectors
are networkable for operation via a single PC. Plus, for improved maintenance, e-mails can be
generated automatically to send lamp replacement reminders and error status notifications.
The DLA-SH7NLG has an MSRP of under $150,000 plus lens and is available immediately.

Publication Date: 2010 Mar 17 PMID: 20233458Authors: Quintales, L. - Sanchez, M. - Antequera,
F.Journal: BMC BioinformaticsABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: DNA microarray technology allows the analysis of
genome structure and dynamics at genome-wide scale. Expression microarrays (EMA) contain probes for
annotated open reading frames (ORF) and are widely used for the analysis of differential gene
expression. By contrast, tiling microarrays (TMA) have a much higher probe density and provide
unbiased genome-wide coverage. The purpose of this study was to develop a protocol to exploit the
high resolution of TMAs for quantitative measurement of DNA strand-specific differential expression
of annotated and non-annotated transcripts. RESULTS: We extensively filtered probes present in
Affymetrix Genechip Yeast Genome 2.0 expression and GeneChip S. pombe 1.0FR tiling microarrays to
generate custom Chip Description Files (CDF) in order to compare their efficiency. We
experimentally tested the potential of our approach by measuring the differential expression of
4904 genes in the yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe growing under conditions of oxidative stress. The
results showed a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.943 between both platforms, indicating that
TMAs are as reliable as EMAs for quantitative expression analysis. A significant advantage of TMAs
over EMAs is the possibility of detecting non-annotated transcripts generated only under specific
physiological conditions. To take full advantage of this property, we have used a target-labelling
protocol that preserves the original polarity of the transcripts and, therefore, allows the
strand-specific differential expression of non-annotated transcripts to be determined. By using a
segmentation algorithm prior to generating the corresponding custom CDFs, we identified and
quantitatively measured the expression of 510 transcripts longer than 180 nucleotides and not
overlapping previously annotated ORFs that were differentially expressed at least 2-fold under
oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS: We show that the information derived from TMA hybridization can be
processed simultaneously for high-resolution qualitative and quantitative analysis of the
differential expression of well-characterized genes and of previously non-annotated and antisense
transcripts. The consistency of the performance of TMA, their genome-wide coverage and adaptability
to updated genome annotations, and the possibility of measuring strand-specific differential
expression makes them a tool of choice for the analysis of gene expression in any organism for
which TMA platforms are available.post to:

Thanks everyone for your questions to my previous post
on this subject. Now the results:
Everyone should install the Maemo Extras application catalog. Just unleash your phone by
installing this
repository.
After you are done installing this we go to the questions:
-
How is XMPP working out?
Good, so go doing your Facebooking or Jabbering everywhere. not to speak you Google Taking
-
The “Unlocks with ’sudo gainroot’” needs a
footnote:
* you need to enable the Maemo Extras application catalog (see above) and install
“rootsh”
* or, alternatively (and less conveniently), you need to enable R&D mode with the flasher
command-line tool on a PC, with the N900 connected over USB
-
Does the browser (fennec iirc?) include support for playing back Ogg video and
audio?
Ogg support can be added as an additional download. You do have the real Firefox now, or so
claims Nokia.
-
Telepathy supports skype? Haven’t heard of this, but it would be _really_
cool!
As written in my post “you have skype, but no skype app which is a
plus.” Yes telepathy handles skype as it handles any other protocol. MSN call
support is coming soon as well.
-
I’d really like to know how easy is to exploit all the cool features of N900 in a
self made program (with Maemo SDK or maybe QT 4.6). I mean, the N900 has a built in
camera, AGPS, accelerometer, FM-transmitter and so on... is it possibile to write a custom
program that uses one or more of these things? For example (it is really just a
weird example) if I want to take a photo with the camera each time the phone is
“shaked”, I could do it? If I want to save my GPS coordinates every 30
minutes in a text file, I could do it?
I guess I won’t be answering that question in this life time… If (and only if) I
ever try programming anything for maemo it will be in Python. I guess you can do pretty neat
things with QT + other libs as this
application shows. A detailed example of that app here
(De-Spotify related).
-
Test a/v calling on gtalk, jabber using telepathy works or not?
tried once and didn’t work. It could have been me or my other peer either being retarded
or just using Linux with the wrong sound config (experienced it before and it had nothing to do
with i.e. skype being wrong)
-
I have seen many people talking about unexpected errors, slow performance, etc.
What´s your overall experience?
I experience it as the easiest piece of tech I have ever had. It really is fast and gives me no
headaches.
-
Can you install .deb packages that are valid for a standard PC?
I guess I should elaborate in this question but I won’t. A deb package made in your PC
for the N900 architecture (armel) should work. But a standard x86 deb will not.
-
Can you install pidgin?
Why on earth would I want to do that? Telepathy is totally integrated in my contact list and
relevant applications… Pidgin in this context would be like having a skype application:
Just overhead! Think of this as a new approach at the way you
communicate, not a reproduction of an ineffective way of doing things.
-
I assume you mention OpenSSH from a client perspective. Can the N900 run the server
side? (not sure that makes sense, but I am curious)
It can and it rocks.
-
How many apps you feel it can run in parallel before it feels bloated?
I have my screen full of phone related apps, browser windows, multimedia stuff and random apps
(terminal, chess, camera) and it still does not feel bloated at all. I really mean it. I never
get irritated by this phone!
-
For how much you bought it and from where i am in Egypt and i want to buy one?
I did not buy it. I am just borrowing it (sort of) from a friend @ Nokia.
-
Its usefulness ...
It helps me being more effective when I am on the move and at the office. So it
really is useful. Not to speak of its awesomeness when enjoying my private time (i.e. camera
& video features)
-
I’ve ordered one that wont arrive for another month =( A few questions related to
barcodes. Can you take a picture of a barcode show it full screen and have scanners scan
it?
I read somewhere that you should be able to do so. Google it mate. I don’t need that and
really don’t have time to test that, sorry.
-
Is there a barcode scanner tool? Bonus for price comparison tools. Sometimes I’ll
be browsing used game stores and see a game fairly cheap and wonder whether I can get it
cheaper elsewhere.

If it isn’t too much trouble, I would like to know how well emacs works on the
device, I notice it doesn’t have a meta key.
Have given emacs way too many chances in other devices to make my life harder in this one. I am

goes for vi/vim so do not hate the player, hate the game!
-
Web browsing while playing music (recorded or streaming); heard complaints that
playback may become choppy.
Works like a charm even under crappy wi-fi conditions.
-
Listening to music over BT stereo headphones and answering calls. Voice commands over
BT?
Lost my BT headset for a while ago and I really am not interested in buying a new one. If
someone has experience on this please answer in the comments.
-
Video calling. I know it’s not there yet in the integrated skype. But what about
Fring or Gtalk or Ytalk?
Tried skype and it worked like a charm. Do not use any of the others, sorry.
-
Voice announcements of incoming messages while listening to music over BT?
No idea. Read #18
-
Smoothness of video playback, whether recorded or streaming? (Again, heard complaints
of choppiness.)
I recorded the audio and video at a concert last weekend and it really worked well. It might
just be me and my lack of interest in video/audio quality in general.
-
Does it have what it takes to play h264 videos in mkv containers?
How can i test that?
-
Can you try different resolutions?
Why should I ever wish that? Drop me the command and I will run them
-
How is the sound quality on mp3, ogg and flac files?
Great. Nokia ere is king among mobile producers. Nothing can even compare to it, specialy when
playing from the speakers. When using headphones it just rocks!
-
How is the performance like for traditional desktop apps(amarok, akregator,
openoffice.org)?
I dreamed of installing the debian extra for maemo but never got far with it. Now I really do
not feel like blowing up my preciously nice working N900.
-
How is the performance of the ‘big’ desktop environments
(xfce, gnome, kde)
Hope I never have the time to go through that operation so I won’t have an
answer.
-
I’d like to see tested is how well this device works as a phone while all the
other crazy hacks are going on.
Works like a charm!
-
Test call quality, battery life, address book functionality, etc.
Cal quality is good. Battery life could be better (will last one day and two at the
most)Â Â and Address Book functionality is very nice specially if you
think about how well integrated everything is. I have had several smartphones over the years
and never seen anything like this.
-
I am curious how well the calendar works, and more importantly, how well it
synchronizes with Google Calendar.
I’ve heard it works like a charm although I do not use Gcalender so I
couldn’t tell.
-
Does it run X11?
I want to know but I don’t. It might do as I can connect to external machines with ssh -X
and get apps running on the N900 (such as eclipse)
-
In other words, is it pie-in-the-sky to expect to use it as a full-blown Linux box?
It ain’t a box, it’s a pone with debian. Isn’t that enough for you? It
certainly works for me!
Thanks for reading!

Apple may be bringing two heavy hitters to the market early this summer according to some rumors
fresh from the pages of AppleInsider. First up is a potentially gorgeous 27 inch, 2560 by 1440
resolution LED-backlit Cinema display which will be a handsome upgrade from the current 24 inch
model. The 27-incher has reportedly been gracing the halls of Apple for some time now, waiting
for market prices to drop to an affordable level for launch. For those with a cash flow that
seemingly has no end, there will also reportedly be a new Mac Pro on tap for June which will
feature not one, but two Xenon 5600 hexacore chips from Intel. This dodeca-core monster machine
will be accompanied by a single chip Mac Pro model which is expected to launch in 2.66GHz,
2.8GHz, 2.93GHz, and 3.33GHz configurations. Those rumored
Core i7-980X Mac Pros are not off the table but that configuration is highly unlikely given
the recent release of the Xenon 5600 processor line and the compatibility these processors offer
with the current generation of Mac hardware.

Install the Agent and head to its configuration screen. There you can choose which images you want

You can also specify the interval between wallpaper changes, customize the maximum size of your
local image cache (the default is 100MB), and enable or disable updates and notifications. Desktop
Agent can also be set to launch when Windows starts up, and you can select which category you want
to appear first when opening the main program window.
There are plenty of stunning images available, though I do have two small gripes. Resolution could
be higher (scaling leads to some predictable graininess on my 1920x1080 display) and there's no
support for dual-monitor configs. Still, I'd much rather see this on a customer's desktop than
Webshots...
