Lorsque Ephraïm Paradies, jeune médecin juif du 17e siècle, accepte de soigner Abigaïl Lopez da Costa, fille d’un riche négociant d’art, atteinte d’une mystérieuse maladie, il n’imagine pas qu’il met le doigt dans l’engrenage d’un amour infernal, celui d’une passion destructrice qui sera celle que la malade éprouvera pour son médecin, au point d’en perdre toute raison.

Un récit qui s’imbrique dans une autre histoire, se déroulant à Paris dans les années 1980, celle de Rebecca Lopez da Costa, lointaine descendante de Abigaïl et de Leo Gualtieri, écrivain italien pas vraiment abouti, qui va vivre aux crochets de Rebecca avant de s’enfuir comme un lâche, voleur de surcroît.

Mise en abîme de deux récits, confrontation de deux destructions psychologiques dues à une passion dévorante pour un homme qui ne comprend pas ou beaucoup trop tard.

Avec en toile de fond la présence de Rembrandt, auteur du tableau "La Mariée Juive" (1665, visible au Rijksmuseum à Amsterdam), qui représenterait Abigaïl et Ephraïm selon la petite histoire.



Alternant récits du passé, l’époque de Rembrandt van Rijn, et la période 1987-2003 dans un Paris grouillant de vie, Luigi Guarnieri à qui on doit "La double vie de Vermeer" décrypte le phénomène de l’irréversible destruction psychologique. Qu’elle se nomme Rebecca ou Abigaïl, son héroïne se laisse littéralement mourir d’amour, femme incomprise des autres et de cette société qui ne lui accorde pas la place qu’elle souhaite. Abigaïl est naturaliste, Rebecca doctorante en Histoire en de l’Art. Chacune aime un homme qui ressent de la tendresse pour elle mais ne peut répondre aux attentes démesurées.

Deux histoires d’amour qui s’entremêlent au fil des pages dans un roman en forme de miroir, avec de tels échos entre les deux que peu à peu les destins se répondent et finissent, par se croiser, d’une certaine manière.



Le tout est mené d’habile manière, dans un style élégant. Ecriture poétique et simple à la fois, rythme agréable, ce fut un bon moment de lecture, empreint d’une grande sensibilité à l’égard du personnage de Rembrandt, décrit sans concession mais avec beaucoup de respect.

Both sides say they wonder whether the recent passage of Proposition 8 in California, which banned gay marriage, will influence the outcome in Iowa, and whether the issue of same-sex unions will return to the forefront as state legislatures return to session early next year." Iowa couple Tim McQuillan and Sean Fritz, who were married very quickly once the judge gave his ruling, were the only couple to be married before the ruling was stayed at the county's request.

Marriage Equality USA to hold public 'town hall' in Los Angeles December 7: "Co-organizer and Chapter Leader Geoff Scowcroft states the purpose, 'is to let the community speaks its mind on what happened in the recent election and to map a new direction for the Same-Sex Marriage Movement.' While other Town Halls have been organized Scowcroft says, 'The messages in these discussions have been controlled by the same organizations that planned the failed strategy for the campaign. The format has lacked the transparency that many in the community feel is essential for a clear understanding of the issues. INDIANA: Same-sex marriage likely off the agenda for 2009: Lawmakers will face plenty of challenges when they meet in January for the 2009 legislative session, with the top priority being the creation of a balanced two-year budget amid a tanking economy. But one hot-button issue that's likely to be left off the agenda is gay marriage. The GOP-controlled state Senate has voted three times since 2005 to pass the proposed amendment, which would have to pass two consecutive, separately elected General Assemblies and then win approval in a statewide vote to take effect. Telic didn’t know what to do next. The barn was gone. Not gone with splinters everywhere, hinting that there was once a barn. This was gone like it had been edited out. Nothing left but dirt.

The sun was setting, and the cows were wandering back, the first few lowing in confusion.

It wasn’t a big farm. A few dozen cows, twice as many chickens, and a family of German Shepherds who maintained order. Now it was an even smaller farm, lacking what had been its largest building.

He turned to look at the farmhouse, hoping it was still there, and secretly fearing it would not be. Reassured by its lack of absence, a memory clicked, and he remembered his grandfather telling stories about the war. Everyone called it the “Reality War”, because calling it “World War Five” or “Interplanetary War One” didn’t quite cover it.

Yes, it had affected everyone on Earth, plus the lunar and martian colonies. But it wasn’t a war of tanks and missles. It was a war of technology. Computer virii seemed harmless enough until 2,000 people died when the life support on their dome on Mare Crisium went spastic. Half of them cooked, the other half froze. Once the temperatures reached either 50C or -50C, the system lowered the air pressure to 50 Pascals.

Then came the nanotech. Microscopic, general-purpose assemblers. Powered by low-dose microwaves, they were like a miracle. They worked better as air pressure decreased, so the first big use was going to be expanding our presence on Mars.

200 cubic meters of them were packed onto a rocket. During the count down, an alarm sounded. An access hatch at the top of the payload area was open. At the same time, a TV satellite started transmitting power and instructions to the nanobots. In hours, the entire launch facility was gone.

The war had begun. No one knew (or at least no one said) who was behind each attack. For all the news said, it could be rival internet gangs.

The war ended a few years later with millions of casualties and a newfound respect for computer security experts. The UN unanimously agreed that using software to kill people was just as offensive as using nuclear weapons. There would be no forgiveness for next time.

Despite the difficulty in determining who had launched which attacks throughout the war, this somehow worked. Life got back to normal.

Some people wanted to get away from technology, including Telic’s grandfather. He had been an accountant all his life, and was hired by the US government as part of a team that generated economic forecasts for various attack scenarios. By the time the war was over, he was tired of seeing the damage done, even if it was mostly on paper.

So he bought this farm in Northern California and settled down.

Recalling the history brought clarity, and Telic knew what his next step should be. Slowly walking back to the house, he plugged in and fired up the old hardened laptop his grandfather had left in a box marked “Justin Case”. No one named Justin had come by looking for it, so like many things in disused corners of a farmhouse, it sat there until needed.

The laptop finished booting, and one of the folders on the desktop was named “nano”. After a few minutes of reading, Telic knew a lot more about the war. Which side he was on, and where he was headed with a small package and an old microwave oven.
