For past two years, I have been pointing towards a subtle but important shift that has
started to take place - the globalization of the Internet. Thanks to a broadband boom in Europe,
Asia and in new emerging economies such as Brazil and China, we are seeing the Internet traffic
shift away from its historic US centricity. The trend was confirmed by our friends at
Telegeography who have put together a clever Internet Map of the
world.
They point out that in 1999, 91 percent of Asia and 70 percent of African Internet capacity
connected to the US. In 2008, only 54 percent of Asian countries’ international Internet
capacity connects to the US, while only 6 percent of African countries bandwidth connects to the
US, as Europe has become more of an Internet hub for Africa. According to their study, the International Internet capacity grew at a
compounded annual rate of 57 percent between 2002 and 2008. In 2008, international Internet
bandwidth rose 62 percent over 2007 as backbone operators continued to upgrade their networks to
meet rising traffic requirements.
Telegeography says the most annual growth was on optical cables that connected to Latin America
and South Asia, which increased 119 percent and 112 percent, respectively, between 2007 and 2008.
“The declining share of traffic routed via the U.S. actually reflects a healthy trend in
the development of the global Internet,” said TeleGeography Research Director, Alan
Mauldin.
My long standing belief is that today’s network patters are like trade route patters of the
Industrial age, and mirror the economic shifts in our societies.

width="1" height="1" //divpCanada's prime minister managed to head off the fall of his conservative
minority government and cling to power yesterday after engineering the suspension of
parliament./ppThe extraordinary decision by Canada's governor general, Michaeuml;lle Jean, to grant
Stephen Harper's request to suspend parliament saved him from a confidence vote set for Monday that
he was almost certain to lose. It also spares Canadians from going to the polls again, just weeks
after elections in October./ppBut the reprieve for Harper takes Canada into uncharted
constitutional territory and creates a political vacuum at a time of global economic crisis. It is
also temporary. Parliament will resume in the new year and the government is due to introduce its
budget on January 27./ppIn attempt to shore up his political prospects in the interim, Harper told
reporters in Ottawa yesterday that his budget would include measures to help the economy, and that
he would try to regain the confidence of the opposition. "Obviously we have to do some
trust-building," he said./ppYesterday's decision brought angry protests from the opposition Liberal
and New Democratic parties, which had called on Jean to refuse the prime minister's request to
prorogue parliament. They accused her of disregarding the will of the majority in parliament.
/ppCanada's crisis was provoked last week when Harper introduced an economic plan that included no
stimulus measures but called for a three-year ban on strikes by civil servants and the abolition of
public financing for political parties. The Liberal party leader, Steacute;phane Dion, accusing
Harper of seeking to politicise the economic crisis, formed a coalition with the leftwing New
Democratic party. The two also secured support from the separatist Bloc Queacute;beacute;cois to
bring down the government. /ppAlthough Harper retreated on both measures, the opposition refused to
back off, raising a political skirmish to yesterday's crisis proportions./ppDonna Dasko, one of
Canada's best-known pollsters, said the move to scrap public financing was the tipping point for an
opposition that had been demoralised by Harper's re-election. "It was so provocative," she said.
"It was purely an effort to take away the modest public support that the political parties
have."/ppAs tensions rose, Harper appeared on national television on Wednesday night vowing to
block a coalition from coming to power. "Canada's government will use every legal means to protect
our democracy, to protect our economy," he said./ppHe said his opponents were undemocratic and
accused Dion of being allied with Queacute;beacute;cois separatists. Harper used the word
"separatist" four times in the five-minute address./ppSpeaking after Jean's decision, the NDP
leader, Jack Layton, said his party would vote down the government in January./pdiv style="float:

width="1" height="1" //divpMorrisons, Britain's fourth-biggest supermarket chain, yesterday
announced a better than expected 8.1% leap in third-quarter sales, in stark contrast to the poor
performance of bitter rival Tesco./ppThe company, also one of the UK's largest food manufacturers,
has successfully attracted cost-conscious shoppers with "Price Crunch" deals such as its pound;4
Sunday roast lunch offer. Its advertising campaign starring Top Gear presenter Richard "the
Hamster" Hammond has also helped to bring customers in. /ppRival Asda yesterday said it is also
performing well as shoppers worried about their jobs conserve cash by trading down to value brands
and own-label goods. Asda's American parent Wal-Mart said November was a strong sales month, though
it refused to give precise figures. /ppAsda boss Andy Bond said: "Offering shoppers everyday low
prices across both food and non-food continues to deliver strong sales and market share gains. The
extra 900,000 customers coming through our doors is clear proof that our strategic focus is the
right one for these difficult times."/ppAsda claims it is growing at almost twice the rate of Tesco
and Sainsbury's and still outpacing Morrisons, which said yesterday it is pulling in an extra
700,000 shoppers a week, compared with last year. Tesco reported its worst sales figures for a
decade and a half this week./ppRecent data from TNS showed that Tesco grew the least among the big
four supermarkets during October. Its market share is estimated to have dropped 0.4 percentage
points to 31.3% as a result of the success of Morrisons and discount retailers./ppBradford-based
Morrisons, meanwhile, said Christmas will be "hard-fought" as it announced that sales in stores
that have been open for at least a year increased 8.1% in the 13 weeks to November 2. The City had
been expecting a rise of about 7.1%./ppMorrisons has been particularly successful in attracting
"value" shoppers, including a quarter of a million taking up its cut-price Sunday lunch
offer./ppMorrisons' results were in contrast to those of Tesco, which said this week that
like-for-like sales, excluding petrol, rose 2% in the past three months - half the growth achieved
in the previous quarter. Tesco's chief executive Sir Terry Leahy was uncharacteristically downbeat,
saying that while he was pleased with progress "we are also realistic - the current economic
climate and the strain this is putting on consumers everywhere is something that all businesses are
feeling, including ours."/ppRetailers across Britain are hoping that the Bank of England's
one-point reduction in interest rates announced yesterday will help support consumer confidence and
see off the threat of one of the worst Christmas trading periods in a generation./pp"We all know
how tough it is for the consumer," Morrisons finance director Richard Pennycook said yesterday of
the rate reduction. "Any incremental steps that can help ease that situation must be
positive."/ppHowever, shares in Morrisons dropped as much as 5% after it announced plans to spend
pound;223m on buying 38 Co-op stores, which the chain is selling as part of its move to gain
regulatory approval for its pound;1.6bn acquisition of Somerfield's 800 stores announced in the
summer./ppAnalysts said the price looked steep. The retail team at investment bank JP Morgan
pointed out that Morrisons sold 117 former Safeway stores to Somerfield four years ago for
pound;260m. It is now paying 86% of that for just 43% of the retail space./ppThe deal also means
that Morrisons will be suspending its share-buyback programme, having spent pound;145.4m of a
planned pound;1bn over two years. Provided it does not make any more acquisitions, the company may
return pound;500m next year./ppPhilip Dorgan, analyst at Seymour Pierce, said the third-quarter
results were good "but they are history. At first sight, we don't like the acquisition and next
year Morrisons could face the heady brew of falling like-for-like sales, falling margins and a
struggle to integrate a costly acquisition."/ppHe said the 38 stores have an average size of
13,000sq ft (1200sq metres) and the full cost of the deal is equivalent to pound;642 a square foot
- which, when compared with Morrisons' own enterprise value per square foot of pound;729, "doesn't
look that good a price, especially when you consider that the acquired stores are around one third
of Morrisons' average store size"./ph2The promotions/h2pstrongSeptember/strong Five

width="1" height="1" //divpThe US consumer is in full-scale retreat, retailers confirmed today, as
dire sales figures confirmed a bleak outlook for the peak shopping season./ppMajor retailers such
as Macy's, Abercrombie Fitch and GAP reported sales declines of more than 10% in November. Retail
figures are a bellwether for the US economy with consumer spending accounting for more than
two-thirds of economic activity. Shops hoped that Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and
traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, would jump-start consumer outlay but industry
experts were downbeat./pp"The American consumer is a train wreck," said Howard Davidowitz, chairman
of Davidowitz Associates, a New York-based retail consultancy. "We don't know when it is going to
get good but I think the worst is yet to come. The results are terrible and will continue to be
terrible."/ppShopperTrak, a retail monitoring firm, said total sales at US retailers rose 1% during
the Black Friday weekend but analysts believe much of that gain will have been stoked by deep
discounts and will hit profits. Black Friday earns it moniker from the fact that most retailers
move into an annual profit in the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas./ppA leading retail
trade group said the decline in November sales hit every section of the industry, affecting
performances at previously robust sectors such as bargain stores and drugs outlets. The
International Council of Shopping Centers, which represents stores including GAP and JCPenney, said
sales at 37 major retailers fell 2.7% over November ndash; the worst start to the holiday season in
35 years - and is forecasting an overall dip of 1% in the final two months of the year./ppRetailers
said the late timing of the Thanksgiving holiday of this year had also dented November figures,
with more sales pushed into December as a result. However, the ICSC said it added up to two
percentage points to the sales decline, which still left sales in a deficit overall./pp "We have
never seen anything as weak as this. It is simply the recession and it is really taking its toll on
consumer spending. And it is not just discretionary spending. It is across the board, with every
segment showing a decline," said Michael Niemira, chief economist at the ICSC./ppThe best performer
today was Wal-Mart, which beat expectations with a 3.4% sales rise at stores that had been open
more than a year. The world's largest retailer added some gloss to the ICSC's figures. Without
Wal-Mart's contribution, November sales would have fallen 7.7%./ppThe worst performers among
individual retailers included Limited Brands, owner of the Victoria's Secret lingerie stores, which
saw a 12% fall in like-for-like sales. Target, a close Wal-Mart competitor, posted a 10.4% decline
and Abercrombie Fitch, the clothing retailer, said sales fell 28% as it refused to join competitors
in aggressive discounting./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

Media Matters for America -
21 hours and 22 minutes ago
On the December 3 broadcast of The War Room, co-host Rose Tennent read from an
article about Deborah Lawrence, an artist who submitted an ornament for the White House
Christmas tree
celebrating, among other things, Rep. Jim McDermott's (D-WA) support for a resolution to
impeach President Bush. Tennent read a quote from the article in which Lawrence said of the
attention surrounding her ornament: "It took on a life of its own, obviously. In a way, I'm
speechless." Tennent responded: "Good, stay that way. Don't talk," to which co-host Jim Quinn
added, "That's right, don't talk. Shut up, bitch."
According to
The Washington Post, first lady Laura Bush "asked members of Congress to pick local
painters" to decorate ornaments for the White House Christmas tree. McDermott "contacted a local
arts organization, which asked Lawrence, a collage artist, to create the local entry."
Media Matters for America has documented that Quinn previously introduced a
segment on Sen. Hillary Clinton by playing Elton John's "The Bitch is Back." Additionally, on October 7, Quinn asserted that Rep. Nancy
Pelosi, whom he referred to as "the Queen Bee," "hated" Clinton "because she didn't want Hillary
to be the most important woman in Washington," adding, "I'm sorry, but it seems to be the nature
-- I shouldn't say the nature of all women -- but it seems to be a trait that flows through, for
whatever reasons, the gender, if you will." Quinn has also stated that to feminists, even "a childless
feminist who looks like a Bulgarian weightlifter in drag" can be a "real woman," and has
repeatedly referred to the National Organization for Women as "the national organization for whores."
Talkers Magazine lists Quinn & Rose among its "Heavy
Hundred," which it describes as the "100 most important radio talk show hosts in America."
According to the show's website, it airs on 18
radio stations and XM Satellite Radio.
From the December 3 broadcast of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose:
QUINN: She needs something --
TENNENT: She sounds frightening.
QUINN: -- to become gainfully employed somewhere doing something for her fellow man besides this.
TENNENT: Argh. Yup, that's right. So, anyway, so she thought that she was making a very brave
statement -- turns out that the White House has decided that, "You know what, don't think that's
appropriate, we're not gonna hang it on the Christmas tree." So, but you know what? They have a
luncheon -- I didn't know this -- for all of the artists, then -- a Christmas luncheon. Guess
what? She jumped on the plane and flew to D.C. -- D.C. to go to the luncheon.
QUINN: Oh yeah --.
TENNENT: Yeah, she's there.
QUINN: She's there for the free meal.
TENNENT: Can you believe it?
QUINN: She's probably homeless and lives out of a shopping cart.
TENNENT: I just think that's a shame -- that's a shame.
QUINN: Well, you know --
TENNENT: Well, she said -- oh, she said, "An artist doesn't always get this kind of attention."
This is the artist speaking.
QUINN: Yeah, 'cause they're hardly ever that stupid.
TENNENT: Plus, like, you're weird. Like, now I'm starting to think that there's something really
wrong with you. That's the attention you're getting right now, sweetie. She said, "It took on a
life of its own, obviously. In a way, I'm speechless." Good, stay that way. Don't talk.
QUINN: That's right, don't talk. Shut up, bitch.
TENNENT: She said, "It's disappointing that I won't get to see it on the tree." And did you think
you would?
QUINN: Yeah, you know, I'll tell you what. There's -- there's always Photoshop. You know, you
could take a picture of it and --
TENNENT: She's an artist. She can figure all of that out, right?
QUIINN: Sure. Take a picture of the White House tree, put your little ball on it --
TENNENT: Yeah.
QUIINN: -- put it up on the morning of December 25th -- you know, the winter solstice celebration
-- and I'm sure you'll have a great time with it.

pATT (a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=T" class="ticker"
title="T"NYSE: T/a) is shedding 12,000 jobs, or 4 percent of its workforce, as it seeks to rein in
costs in the face of the worsening economy. With most of the cuts occurring this month, the carrier
expects to take a $600 million charge on severance payments and other related costs. ATT didn't
