The other teams were told of Honda's decision at a meeting of the Formula One Teams' Association in London on Wednesday and the workforce were told last night that they would be on three months' notice as from the start of January. /pp"They [Honda] have a month to find a buyer, otherwise they are closing the team," one highly placed source quoted the Honda team bosses, Ross Brawn and Nick Fry, as telling a meeting of the Fota. He added that it was no real surprise given the team "were running up costs to a level that were self-evidently unsustainable". /ppIf Honda withdraws, some will conclude that it has vindicated the stance of the FIA president, Max Mosley, who warned earlier this year that the sport was becoming unsustainable in the current economic environment because of the high costs required to compete. The withdrawal will mean only 18 cars on the starting grids in 2009 and could prompt other teams to re-think whether formula one is currently worth the investment./ppHonda has consistently under-delivered in terms of hard results in recent years. In 2008 the team finished ninth in the constructors' championship despite having recruited Brawn, the former Ferrari technical director who masterminded five of Michael Schumacher's seven world championships, as team principal. /ppBrawn had been pinning hopes on gaining a performance advantage in 2009 when new technical regulations, introducing slick tyres and radical aerodynamic changes, would play to Honda's technical strengths. New Yorker music critic Alex Ross won this year's Guardian first book award for his history of 20th century music The Rest is Noise:

"The chair of the judging panel, Guardian literary editor Claire Armitstead, said: 'In some quarters this book has been seen as not having a popular appeal. Our prize – which, uniquely, relies on readers' groups in the early stages of judging – proves that, on the contrary, there is a huge appetite among readers for clear, serious but accessible books.' According to one judge: 'Where Ross lifts his book above the 'expert' and impressive to the 'good read' category is in the way he wears his learning lightly, never clutches for false or contrived ways of explaining music, and never dumbs down in order to explain.'"

The sales slump comes as the only other player in London's electric car market, the Nice Car Company, went into administration. /ppSet up two years ago, the company had been selling an all-electric version of the French-made Aixam Mega. Nice had planned to bring out more models, including a two-seater and an MPV by the end of the year but, according to Bremner, sales had dropped lately to less than a single car per week./ppBremner added that consumers could also have been put off the G-Wiz after it failed a crash test last year. Because the vehicle is considered a quadricycle rather than a car, it does not need to pass the stringent crash tests of the other cars on the road./pp"Last year, they had some unfortunate publicity around the crash performance of that vehicle because Top Gear crash-tested one in the same way that you would a conventional car and it was found wanting," said Bremner./ppHartridge said the furore had no doubt had an impact on sales. January 2009 will mark the first anniversary of Apple's switch in positioning Apple TV from something that transferred computer-based content to a PC to a video vending machine that allowed direct ordering over broadband. In doing so and cutting a few dollars off the price, the company became the leader in a small category of products exclusively focused on displaying networked content. However, it's been far from alone there. The installed bases of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which offer similar functionality, far exceed those of Apple's little box. Recently the long-delayed SlingCatcher came out of the gate, which -- with a little finagling on a PC screen-- can display virtually any video content available via broadband on a television using its SlingProjector technology.

Vudu, a startup that had launched a similar a la carte device, has pushed deeper into the custom installation channel as of late. And CinemaNow, which had partnered with HP on its MediaSmart televisions and standalone device, was recently purchased for $3 million by Sonic Solutions. The acquiring company likely has designs on using the service to support its at-home DVD burning technology QFlix.

And on the low-end from Roku -- the roots of which were as a developer of PC-stereo bridging products -- has come a nondescript box that streams movies from Netflix for $99. A year before MovieBeam finally had its plug pulled, its receiver device was available for even less than that.
