I was thinking since Ipod Touch has wireless connection. Would it be possible to make the touch
sync to your pc or mac using the wireless connection and router instead of the wired usb
connection?

My dad bought one. And I think it nice. Access only through LAN and even from web if you have a
router since it have a FTP service.
I have a MyBook myself, a Firewire/USB edition , and I am ok with, I complained with the noise in
the beginning but I grew up with it as long I don't swapping much files with it.
I look for a MBWEII at Costco, it will be a backup module I will store at my parents domicile, to
secure my datas in case of fire or thief. Does Seagate's external drives have some equivalents?

Hey I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction for a min rack-like cabinet. I
currently have my modem, router, and some USB drivers laying on the floor stack with wires
everywhere. I'd like to get a little cabinet maybe like 1-2 feet tall to organize it in and keep it
tidy. I'd prefer a cabinet with a window so I can see status lights inside, etc. Basically a mini
rack setup for a small home network. Not sure if a product like this is available but there always
seems to be someone on here that knows of "that product"
Thanks everyone!

Hi,
I just got a Time Machine, and now it's currently backing up my system.
I can get on the internet just fine through both the Mac side and the Windows side (using
Parallels).
However, a Windows notebook cannot get online now. It was working just fine before. Furthermore, it
can find and connect to the network. But when we open Firefox, it says it can't connect.
Will Time Machine now work as a general router while it's backing up? What's going on here?
Thanks!

So I have recently been flooded with issues regarding technology around my house. I have just sent
my PS3 in for a warranty replacement (which was a smooth process), have gone "wired" after my
well-loved Netgear 802.11B router would not work well with my new iMac and just the other day, my
hard drive crashed on the new iMac.
Thankfully I do backups periodically so I should not loose a lot of data. I have not been using
Time Machine because my external is not large enough to handle the backup (it's around 200GB and
the iMac is 320GB). I have started looking at the Time Capsule as an option for backing up as well
as to replace my router and get N connectivity. Is this a smart all-in-one purchase? I've always
thought the Airport Express Base Station was overpriced so I was considering getting a Linksys
router.
Also, for backups, I'm not sure I need the wireless capabilities of the Capsule. I built my current
external using a MacAlly enclosure and could do the same for about $100 to get a 500GB external
that I just daisy-chain in with my existing drive.

I'm a Mac newbie with a MBP. I can see my Windows XP system in the Finder under shared, as well as
a networked hard disk I added with an smb connection. These systems are all on a linksys
router.
However, when I go to the terminal and try to access these same systems by name, using ping, ssh,
etc., the Mac cannot find them.
And my XP box cannot find my Mac using ping from a Cygwin terminal.
Any ideas what I should be trying to make this work?
(The other systems are on dynamic IPs; I'd rather not switch them to fixed IPs and hard code them
into /etc/hosts.)
Thanks.

inside my parents house, there is broadband internet, netgear router, PCs, a mac, and a ps3. i have
a mac at MY house. what i want to do is setup some sort of network so that any pc/mac/ps3 can
access files, media, printers, etc. In addition to this,i want to be able to "dial in/ log in" from
across the internet and thru the router connection at my house or from someones laptop.
my understanding of how this stuff works isn't zero but, i'm not exactly sure of everything i need
2 do in order 2 get this working the way i want....
also would BOTH routers need ports forwarded, or jus the parents router with the network?
btw, the host machine thats on all the time would be an XP machine, unless theres someway to host a
network somewhere on the internet or something... but that sounds like a whole nother ball of
wax
plenty of input would be GREAT! TIA

I woke up at 10 ish AM this morning with this:
I have Jay Freeman's VNC server installed on my phone and have had it for quite a while. I'm very
unsure of if it was accessed through EGDGE/3G or through my router. My router is WEP encrypted with
a local address of 192.168.1.1xx
Anyone think they could think of how someone even possibly attempted connecting through port 5900
on purpose to my phone from that IP ? How did they find MY phone's IP ?
I just thought that was just a little bit creepy !

Hi there - first post so hello!
Recently bought a touch but cant seem to get on the internet with it. My touch has got my network
name under settings - wi-fi and choose a network. My broadband name is there with a full strength
signal but when i try and connect through safari it just says "cannot open page".
Not sure if i maybe need to tell my router to allow me to connect with my touch? If this is the
case how do I do it? My router is an EchoLife HG520.
Thanks for any ideas.

Chrysler has been toying
with in-car connectivity for months now, so it's really no shock to see the next logical step being
taken. At the San Francisco Auto Show this week, the automaker is set to showcase a "Web Edition"
package, which would theoretically be available as a dealer-installed option for most Chrysler,
Jeep, and Dodge vehicles. The bundle would include an
Autonet Mobile router (branded as
Uconnect Web), a Dell Mini 9, 8GB iPod touch, Sony PSP and an Eye-Fi WiFi SD card; couple that
with one year of internet service and you've got everything that makes up the $1,999 asking price.
Reportedly, a slimmed down option will go for $1,100 and only include the router, service and Mini
9, though there's no indication of when it'll be hitting new whips. Nor if Chrysler will survive
long enough to tell us.

There is a wireless router (non Apple) on the second floor of my house (my dad's office), the only
problem is that it cannot reach most of downstairs. For example it cannot reach my bedroom, only my
parent's bedroom, which is directly below the router. This means I have to go to my parent's room
if I want to go online on my Macbook. Bummer :(. And my sister is getting a laptop for her
birthday, so something needs to be sorted.
So to try and solve the problem, my dad got an Airport Express (the 802.11n one) in order to try
and bridge or extend the network downstairs. But neither of us know how to get it working. I tried
setting it up with the Airport Utility but with no success. And a trip to the Apple Store didn't
help either. The guy at the Genius Bar told us the router would work bridging/extending the
network, but no joy either.
I've been told that it needs to be set up with the router's setting on a web page, but I've not
been able to access them (admin privileges?).
In short, I need an Airport Express to bridge/extend a Wi-Fi network from a non-Apple Wi-Fi router.
Any thoughts? Cheers :)

This is pretty ingenious: a href="http://www.kryogenix.org" target="_blank"Stuart Langridge/a was
bothered by the fact that his torrent downloads were eating up all of his bandwidth, making it
impossible to do other things. His solution? A short Python script that stops all of his torrent
transfers whenever he is on the computer, and resumes them as soon as the screen saver kicks back
in. This hack was made possible by Transmission's API, anda
href="http://www.kryogenix.org/days/2008/11/15/pause-torrents-while-im-using-the-computer"
target="_blank" the script can be downloaded here./abr / br / Another solution would of course have
been to implement some sort of Quality of Service traffic management, preferably on the router
level, as it is possible with advanced open source router firmware platforms like a

flexible when it comes to different contexts, so why not regulate the software on your machine

I am experiencing an INCREDIBLY slow internet connection via wi-fi on my new MacBook Pro. Not only
that, but I am lucky if my laptop will even stay connected to my router or if I can get it to
reconnect. I just upgraded to the new model from the previous 17" model and i never had this issue.
In fact, I just opened my old MacBook Pro and NO problems at all.
Anyone else experiencing this?
