Are there any IM apps that will alert you when you recieve an IM (on wifi of course) even though
you're haven't open the app on your screen. For example if you are in safari and someone IMs you,
it'll beep or something letting you know you have an IM. I have the AIM app and have it set to "do
not log me off when I close app", but every time I click back to the app, it signs back in and I
see I have a few messages that were sent to me when I was in safari or something.

Trying to open .pdf files locks up PathFinder and crashes: Yep, DevonThink.
I have been having this problem for months. I had direct contact with PathFinder's programmer and
he couldn't figure it out. All we came up with is that it seems to be an OS X issue. Safari also
used to crash when opening a .pdf but I fixed that by installing a third party pdf plugin. (not
Adobe. I am not sure of the name.)
Yep will preview the .pdf okay but if I click to actually open the .pdf file it crashes instantly.
Same with DevonThink. Any ideas?
Here is the crashlog from PathFinder:

Google Earth Plug-in 43.11498.3261 Google Earth Plug-in... Google Earth... in your
browser... on your Mac!
Google Earth Plug-in and its JavaScript API let you embed Google Earth, a true 3D digital globe,
into your web pages. Using the API you can draw markers and lines, drape images over the terrain,
add 3D models, or load KML files, allowing you to build sophisticated 3D map applications. If you
have an existing Maps API site, you can 3D-enable your page with as little as one line of code.
How do I start?

I just got a new 24" monitor for my MBP (2.4, SR), my first external monitor I've used on this
computer. However, ever since I started using it, programs keep crashing. Safari and Word 2008 have
especially been crashing, but that may be because those are the two programs I've use the most
often.
Even more weirdly, Safari hasn't just been crashing, it's also frozen in weird ways. A couple
times, the window was still there, and the Dock said that Safari was still responding, but the
entire window was blank white. Completely white, with no buttons or anything else visible. Yet it
was still functioning, since double-clicking on the top of it minimized the window into the dock.
When I de-minimized it, I could see the window again, but the bookmark and tab bars were weirdly
compressed.
A couple times I also noticed patches of "static" or dithering on my desktop.
Does anyone have any idea what could be doing this? Could there be something wrong with my graphics
card?

Hi all! I've had - my touch since summer and have fumbled my way around in it and most of the time
I can figure out what I need. Went away for a week and used the available wireless network - touch
worked fine when the network did. Since I've been home, it recognizes my wireless network but will
not connect so that all of the internet applications work - no mail, no weather (says update
failed), no safari (message: safari couldn't open the page because the server stopped responding)
Doesn't work when I go to restaurants or other places with wireless access. Any suggestions on what
to look at, change or fix? Sure would appreciate any help with this - I really miss being able to
grab mail when I want it. TIA!

How nice would that be! Being able to upload screenshots or anything really right from your
touch!
This would be great! The more I can do from my iPhone the better!
Also a better arciving tool would be nice. I downloaded TheZip but it doesn't seem to work? Packing
and extracting rar would be nice to.

img class=face src=http://planet.ubuntu.com/heads/emmajane.png alt= pI've been having some random
problems with my RSS reader, a href=http://liferea.sourceforge.net/Liferea/a. I think it was a
permission problem on the settings folder, but it was enough of an annoyance that I started to set
up the Google Reader for my feeds. But I almost immediately bailed. I didn't like how the
application felt at all. I'm so used Liferea after years of using it that it was hard to switch my
mental model over to quot;this is a Web site.quot; It wasn't just the buttons and the GUI, it was
also how the application worked. In Liferea I know when I'm caught up because the stories stop
coming. The data is downloaded to my machine and I can read it and then it's read. But in Google
Reader the data keeps coming. It reaches further and further into the history of the Web site to
pull more and more stories and it feels as though you will never catch up on the news feed. (Being
able to search for a feed instead of having to know the URL for the feed was, however,
ibrilliant/i.) /p pAs I neared the end of my ten minute foray into using Google Reader I started to
think about why I want my desktop experience to be different from my Web experience. Do I want my
desktop experience to be a Web experience? Have you seen the new a
href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wI6Tr0Tz5UgOS/a (links to YouTube demo), a
href=http://www.thinkgos.com/cloud.phpCloud/a (links to site)? (a
href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOS_(operating_system)More about gOS here/a and a
href=http://www.thinkgos.com/here/a. It's based on Ubuntu.) Your computer as a thin client to the
cloud of applications out there. Brilliant, but also really scary to think that realistically my
data IS actually all out there. (I like to pretend I'm in control at least once a week.) So
although I have switched back to my desktop application, Liferea to keep track of news, I've
started thinking a little bit more about applications and data and access and status. (Have you
watched the Van Jacobson talk yet? He talks about a
href=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6972678839686672840amp;q=engeduaccessing data/a too.)
/p pSo let's look at the quot;statequot; of my computer. A while ago Mark blogged about the new a
href=http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/233user switching status applet thingy/a. Now that
I'm using 8.10, I'm also using this little widget. Was it a
href=http://mjg59.livejournal.com/Matthew/a who was talking about wanting a system that just
iknew/i when he was on a plane and therefore turn off the wireless when booting? (I think so...I
think it was part of the power management talk and how things just ought to know without you having
to tell them.) Regardless of who said it first, quot;statesquot; are definitely of interest. I am
almost finished writing a href=http://safari.oreilly.com/9780137007752Front End Drupal/a (and will
begin the editing process this weekend) but for the last month (or three) I have been almost always
set to quot;awayquot; in a href=http://www.pidgin.im/Pidgin/a (I don't like the red icon for
quot;do not disturbquot;, so I use quot;awayquot; instead). Not because want others to leave me
alone, but because the little clock icon reminds me that I ought to be working. Years ago I had
very interesting conversations with sociologist a
href=http://www.kmdi.utoronto.ca/people/bios/GaleMoore.aspxGale Moore/a about interruption and
instant messaging. And now here I am thinking about how I do, or do not, want to be interrupted.
quot;Statequot; isn't just the status of me or my computer, it is the status of
quot;wequot;...that's me, me and my computer and you and me. /p pThere are currently four states in
the status switching applet:/p ul liOnline/li liAway/li liBusy/li liOffline/li /ul pBut what if I
could define my states? I think my list would look like this (yours would probably be different, we
should be able to define these states):/p ul libSocial/b (all on)/li libWorking/b (please try not
to distract me too much)/li libOn the phone/b (you will not get my full attention)/li libAway/b
(AFK)/li libUnplugged/b (gOS-cloud-esque to optimize for battery power)/li libOffline/b (no
internets)/li /ul pAnd when I switch to different states my whole computer ought to shift with me.
Social, for example, should have Pidgin set to quot;onlinequot;, Liferea open and checking for new
stories, IRC open and sending alerts, and why not have Skype open too because I use that for
specific contacts. Working should set Pidgin to quot;Trying to get the mortgage paidquot;, Liferea
should be disabled. etc. So a state is not just a status, but a whole suite of how I want to be
interrupted and interact with people and my computer./p pWhat are your states?/p

Hello,
I have a new 15" MBP Aluminum. It's the 2.53 GHz with a 320GB 7200 HD.
I don't seem to be getting very good battery life. I just unplugged the power cord and it estimates
2:50. I only have Safari and Mail running. I am connected over WiFi and Bluetooth is turned on. The
screen brightness is at the lowest setting. I am running in Power Saver mode with the lower powered
video card. I conditioned my battery when I first got it.
Here is what iStat provides:
Cycles 8
Health 100%
99%, 2:50 remaining.
Here is the Power information from the System Profiler.
Model Information:
Serial Number: SMP-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx
Manufacturer: SMP
Device name: bq20z951
Pack Lot Code: 0000
PCB Lot Code: 0000
Firmware Version: 002a
Hardware Revision: 000a
Cell Revision: 0100
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 4282
Fully charged: No
Charging: No
Full charge capacity (mAh): 4643
Health Information:
Cycle count: 8
Condition: Good
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): -1571
Voltage (mV): 12094
The other day, I unplugged the MBP and took it to work. I only turned it on when I was teaching. I
used the mini adapter to connect the MBP to the projector. After I taught, I closed the lid and
when I got home the power was down to 10%.!! So I was only able to get about 1.5 hours out of it
for the day. The screen was on full brightness when I was teaching however.
Are other getting less than 3hrs battery life? Does this sound about right? Any suggestions?
Cheers.

Hi,
I started using mac recently and was wondering if there is any shortcut to switch between two
safari windows.
If I have two safari windows opened then every time I had to minimize (using mouse) the one that I
am using to view the other window.
If I select command+tab options I couldn’t see two safari windows. There is only one getting
displayed.
I don’t know is there any options available for safari like alt+tab in windows.
Please let me know
