Voilà une nouvelle qui va rendre heureux bon nombre de fans de JRPGs. En effet, l'attente concernant Suikoden Tierkreis, le prochain volet de la saga phare de Konami, sera de très courte durée. Le jeu arrivera ainsi en Europe au mois de Mars 2009 tout comme la version US. En attendant de pouvoir découvrir la quête du jeune héros, membre de la milice protégeant le village de Citro, et de son meilleur ami Ryu dans leur recherche des 108 étoiles, voilà encore de nouvelles images alléchantes du jeu. A noter qu'en plus de la quête des 108 étoiles commune à la plupart des épisodes de la saga, la connection Wi-Fi de la DS sera utilisée afin que les joueurs puissent se transférer leurs héros respectifs pour les faire participer à diverses quêtes histoire de gagner quelques niveaux. Rappelons pour les plus impatients que Suikoden Tierkreis sort dans deux semaines (le 18 décembre) au Japon.

Virtual goods were all the rage a while ago, but nowadays I don’t hear that much about them. Perhaps everyone got bored of Second Life, companies stopped opening virtual headquarters in virtual worlds, and WoW players…well, they’re a lost cause anyway, tormented creatures always destined to live in the shadow (also, Blizzard does not allow off-site trade with virtual money or goods from the game).

This doesn’t mean that the marketplace for virtual goods does not exist; it’s just not that hip anymore. PlaySpan wants to change this, and they’ve launched the PlaySpan Virtual Goods Marketplace which will contain items from popular MMOs such as EVE Online, Gunz, Kal, Knight Online, Saga, Shaiya, Silk Road, Soldier Front, Trickster and War Rock. This is not a black or grey market, though: only publisher-approved items will be sold at PlaySpan.

PlaySpan focuses on the young audience who might not have access to credit cards (more specifically, their dads told them they’ll throw them out in the street if they touch their wallet again). Therefore, they’ve set up a number of alternate micropayment methods to give the little rascals what they crave. Need a time code, a cool item, or some virtual money? No problemo, you can buy them here if you have access to either a credit card, PayPal or PayByCash. If you’re not convinced, PlaySpan sweetened the deal with an introductory offer: new Marketplace customers will receive 100 free points on registration.

Zone Film is delivering a slice of horror with Jeff Welch's Piecemeal, a pretty interesting film that tells the tale of a teen who struggles to control his rage while living the life of a brutally abused young man in recurring nightmares. Daniel Roby is set to direct the film next fall after helming Remstar Prods.' 1970s-era saga FUNKTOWN in March. Seville Pictures will distribute the film in the U.K. and Canada, which means a Lionsgate release in the States is highly probably. Roby scored the TIFF's best Canadian debut feature award for his excellent vampire thriller WHITE SKIN. TCB Film's Simon Trottier will produce the film - his recent Toronto thriller MARTYRS helped land director Pascal Laugier a gig helming Dimension's next HELLRAISER film.

The biggest film of 2008 arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this December 9th, and Cinematical is here to share our initial impressions, likes and dislikes, as well as let you know whether this monster piece of home entertainment is worth the purchase. Perhaps time will tell if The Dark Knight is the best comic book movie ever made, but in the meantime it's fairly easy to declare it the best comic book movie of 2008. Director Christopher Nolan and his team of Bat-freaks brought out the bigger guns for this sequel, adding more explosions, more depth, more darkness and more Gotham. The result is an action-packed psychological salad full of delicious performances and fantastic visuals.

In fact, that's exactly why you'll want to own this thing -- it just looks ... so ... good. On the Blu-ray disc, for example, the film alternates between aspect ratios, showing the IMAX-filmed scenes in 1.78:1, and the rest in 2.40:1. Sure, it's a bit different than watching it on a seven-story screen, but the IMAX sequences (in particular the opening bank heist) will no doubt take your television hostage and seduce every inch of your geek-obsessed body. Is it somewhat annoying to dance between two aspect ratios during the film? Not really, except that you'll wish the entire saga was shot with IMAX cameras. If you haven't yet watched a flick on Blu-ray, do yourself a favor and pop your HD cherry on The Dark Knight.
