pScale Model for ArmorA living fossil could inspire tomorrowrsquo;s armor. Engineers at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, funded by the U.S. Army, investigated the primitive fish
Polypterus senegalus, nicknamed the ldquo;dinosaur eelrdquo; for the suit of armor it sports. In
experiments mimicking bites from a predator, the researchers found that each scale is made of three
layers on a bone support that all complement one another to defy penetration. The outer coat is the
hardest and most resistant to sharp teeth. The middle is softer and dissipates energy by deforming.
The last layer has a plywoodlike structure, which prevents cracks from spreading. The precise
sequence of these layers critically preserves armor strength--for instance, replacing the outer and
middle layers in simulations increased risk of the scale coming apart. These findings, posted
online July 27 by Nature Materials, could illuminate how fish evolved and lead to more effective

i(7 Oct 2008)/ibr /br /The canonical problem of solving a system of linear equations arises in
numerous contexts in information theory, communication theory, and related fields. In this
contribution, we develop a solution based upon Gaussian belief propagation (GaBP) that does not
involve direct matrix inversion. The iterative nature of our approach allows for a distributed
message-passing implementation of the solution algorithm. We address the properties of the GaBP
solver, including convergence, exactness, computational complexity, message-passing efficiency and
its relation to classical solution methods. We use numerical examples and applications, like linear
detection, to illustrate these properties through the use of computer simulations. This empirical
study demonstrates the attractiveness (e.g., faster convergence rate) of the proposed GaBP solver
in comparison to conventional linear-algebraic iterative solution methods.

BACKGROUND: We consider the discovery of recombinant segments jointly with their origins within
multilocus DNA sequences from bacteria representing heterogeneous populations of fairly closely
related species. The currently available methods for recombination detection capable of
probabilistic characterization of uncertainty have a limited applicability in practice as the
number of strains in a data set increases. RESULTS: We introduce a Bayesian spatial structural
model representing the continuum of origins over sites within the observed sequences, including a
probabilistic characterization of uncertainty related to the origin of any particular site. To
enable a statistically accurate and practically feasible approach to the analysis of large-scale
data sets representing a single genus, we have developed a novel software tool (BRAT, Bayesian
Recombination Tracker) implementing the model and the corresponding learning algorithm, which is
capable of identifying the posterior optimal structure and to estimate the marginal posterior
probabilities of putative origins over the sites. CONCLUSIONS: A multitude of challenging
simulation scenarios and an analysis of real data from seven housekeeping genes of 120 strains of
genus Burkholderia are used to illustrate the possibilities offered by our approach. The software

This exhibition takes a look at the changes and developments computer technology has made to the
Visual Arts and will attempt to address the following questions:br / br / How have artists
integrated the computer into their chosen mediums/disciplines?br / In what ways does the computer
help artists make works that are not possible without such technology?br / What new uses for
computers have artists discovered?br / How has computer technology affected art made today?br / How
has computer technology affected our assumptions about art?br / br / The artists selected for this
exhibition were chosen from across the United States and beyond, in keeping with these questions
and looking at how artists have embraced the use of the computer. A wide net was cast over the
disciplines of visual art in order to see how ubiquitous the use of the computer is. Another
consideration was to go in a different direction other than what is overtly apparent as digital
art. The works included in this exhibition suggest how using the computer may be helping artists to
reinvent traditional modes of working and thinking about what they are creating. The title for the
exhibition (a play on words which comes from the “merge visible” option in the layer
palette of Photoshop)and is meant to be associated with the idea of merging the computer and other
art making tools, both analog and digital, old and new.br / br / A unique aspect of MERGE VISUAL
explores the merging of the computer and moving images, i.e. film and video. For this part of the
exhibition, artists were asked to create works specifically for the Planetarium, an immersive
environment that references the concepts of simulation, Virtual Reality, spectacle, the history of
“light shows”, synaesthesia, and lumia. Many of these artists admitted that they were
in “uncharted territory” but the spirit of crossing boundaries can be seen here in the
merging of art and invention to create something new.br / br / MERGE VISUAL, an exhibit exploring
this relationship between art and digital technology, opened at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in
Macon, Georgia on Friday, Sept. 12 and will continue until Nov. 2. br / br / With the work of over
40 artists from 14 states and two countries, MERGE VISUAL shows technology’s nationwide and
international impact on art. The exhibit and planetarium program showcase art from as close as
Macon, Ga. and as far away as Ireland. br / br / Craig Coleman, associate professor of art at
Mercer University, is the guest curator for MERGE VISUAL. He is also an accomplished artist who has
