released its official Gmail gadget for its Google Desktop product line, offering users the choice
to run a gamut of various Gmail accounts as standalone gadgets simultaneously. This tool will
introduce a bunch of useful Gmail features including keyboard shortcuts, mail, and contact search,
and the indispensable option to award your messages with a star. Not only that, users are able to
compose emails in small pop-out windows that does away with the need to launch a browser. This is a
Windows-only application at this point in time and will require Google Desktop version 5 or higher
to run, so Mac and Linux users are out of luck at this point in time./p pPermalink: a

Today’s Wall Street Journal
story talking about yet another takeover attempt of Yahoo is incorrect, say our own sources.
And unlike
The Times’ story over the weekend, which was equally fictitious, this
story had direct consequences in the market.
Today’s story as former AOL CEO Jonathan
Miller out pitching private equity funds to raise “$28 billion to $30 billion” to
acquire all of Yahoo.
Miller, along with his partner Ross Levinsohn at
Velocity Interactive
Group, were also center stage in The Times’ story over the weekend.
Our sources say that while Miller and Levinsohn have been talking to Yahoo and Microsoft
executives and shareholders for months about Yahoo’s future (and at different times both
Miller and
Levinsohn have been proposed as Yahoo board members), they have not had any serious
discussions with private equity funds about raising capital to take over the company.
The two, along with their other partners at Velocity, have been busy trying to raise a new $300
million fund over the last year anyway. And so far, we understand, they’ve only received
commitments for $150 million. So trying to simultaneously raise $30 billion to take over Yahoo
seems more than far fetched.
Another reason the story makes no sense - Levinsohn is bound by a non compete agreement with AOL
that prohibits him from serving as an employee or board member to certain companies, including
Yahoo. In fact, that non compete agreement is the reason Miller
couldn’t join Yahoo’s board this last summer. The agreement doesn’t
terminate until March, so any near term deal is impossible without AOL’s explicit consent.
They wouldn’t give it last summer, and there’s no reason to believe they’d give
it now.
Velocity won’t say much about the story, other than to comment that the WSJ made no real
effort to contact them for comment before the story was published.
Our sources, combined with basic common sense, tell us the WSJ story is dead wrong. And there
were consequences to the story - Yahoo’s stock jumped 11.7% today on the the incorrect
news, before settling back down for the day. People lost money, and the SEC should be very
interested in whoever was the source for this story.

Convenient. The Fueltank does exactly what it says it does: charge two devices simultaneously on

left to power the phone for another two hours. One quirk though, is that the battery status display
only works correctly when the Fueltank isn't plugged in to a power source, and displays somewhere
between half to full power when you activate it while it's charging via a wall socket. It works
correctly when disengaged and powering other devices./p pIt's kinda similar to the a

that we tested last week, but only for smaller portable devices and not laptops. In our view, it's
definitely worth $60 as a backup or extended battery, especially if you've got a phone like the a
href="http://gizmodo.com/tag/g1"T-Mobile G1/a that can barely last a day on moderate use. The
Fueltank is the same thickness and about 1.5x as wide as the G1, so it's easily slipped into your
laptop bag. A good device for anyone who travels regularly and needs supplemental power where
there's no outlets to be found. [a href="http://www.callpod.com/products/fueltank"Callpod/a]/p br

(Image via Wikipedia)
They sure don't now. According to Jeff Vail, they
just might:
How much of its own food can suburbia produce? In America, the average suburban lot size is
approximately 12,000 square feet. That's about a quarter-acre. At an average of 2.56 people per
household, and a rough average of 10,000 feet per lot not covered by structures, that's just
under 4,000 square feet of yard per person. Of course, this ignores the potential for parks and
other open spaces in suburbia to be converted to food-production. It is also an average
figure--some neighborhoods will have far less space, others far more. Despite these sources of
variability, it is a good jumping-off point. Is 4,000 square feet enough to provide for a person?
There are three requirements: calories, nutrition, and the variety and selection necessary to
support culture and quality of life. In addition, there are four limiting factors to food
production in a given area: sunlight, water, labor, and soil/nutrients. In the interest of space,
I'll only address three of these: calories, nutrition, and soil/nutrients--please feel free to
discuss the other requirements and constraints in comments.
Can 4,000 square feet produce enough calories to feed one person? At 26 calories per ounce and
roughly 8,000 pounds of potatoes harvested from 4,000 square feet (based on intermediate yields
from John Jeavons "How to Grow More Vegetables," p. 92), that's 3.3 million calories, or 9,000
calories per day. This is, of course, completely unsustainable, insufficiently nutritious, etc.
But it does answer the question--it is possible to grow enough calories on 4,000 square feet per
person. The real limiting factors are nutrition and soil, discussed below:
Can 4,000 square feet produce enough nutrients to feed one person while simultaneously sustaining
and improving the soil? One issue is that topsoil has been scraped away from more recent suburban
developments. How effectively can we re-build soil, and how long does it take? John Jeavons has
addressed this question in depth (summarized at p. 28-29 of "Grow More Vegetables"). He concludes
that 4,000 square feet is roughly enough to feed one person a complete, nutritious diet, while
simultaneously improving soil quality. His method involves 60% (by area) focus on growing
soil-improving crops (high carbon content food crops for eventual compost), 30% mixed
high-calorie root crops, and 10% mixed vegetables.
Check out Jeff's other suburbia analyses here. If you're

with a 2.4GHz wireles receiver and four earbuds to allow you to share your favorite tunes with a

width="1" height="1" //divpI am not an alcoholic but I do have a problem with drink. I rarely get
properly drunk - maybe two or three times a year - but when I do, it's on a shameful, monumental
scale. Historically, this has often coincided with the Christmas party season./ppThis year,
however, will be different. Or that is the idea, at least./ppSix months ago, after I found myself
telling friends yet another "hilarious" tale of a drunken incident, I embarked on a self-imposed
period of alcoholic awareness, designed to remove the possibility of ever again being incapacitated
by drink. I realised that unless I could find a way to avoid my epic displays I would be forced
down the route of the alcoholic and have to give up drink completely. I was going to have to learn
to deal with one drink at a time. Here's what I, and others in my position, have
discovered./ppstrongFirst, establish whether you have a drink problem/strong/ppThis is easier said
than done. Hypnotherapist Georgia Foster, author of The Drink Less Mind (Foster Publishing) and a
specialist in helping people gain control around alcohol, says: "Sometimes we all drink too much.
The odd, one-off 'blitzing it' moment is fine. But if it's a regular occurrence and it's not in
check, that's a problem." That may be the case for many, but although my drunkenness was
infrequent, to me, those blitzes felt problematic. Tania Glyde, author of Cleaning Up: How I Gave
Up Drinking and Lived (Serpent's Tail), agrees that defining the extent of your drink problem is
often subjective. "When I gave up drinking, lots of people said to me, 'You weren't that big a
drinker'. Some people are able to drink huge amounts and not worry about it. I think you only have
a problem when you reach your personal limit of shame."/ppSarah (not her real name), 29, faced this
question three years ago. Now a personal trainer, she used to work in the City where binge drinking
after work was common. "I wasn't an alcoholic in that I didn't need to drink every day," she says.
"But if I went out, I had only to have one glass and I just wanted to keep on and on. Every time I
drank, it would result in me getting drunk. I didn't have any control." She was becoming
increasingly miserable, smoking more and overeating, too./ppstrongTry hypnotherapy/strong/ppIn 2005
Sarah saw a hypnotherapist for 12 one-hour sessions which, she says, helped re-programme her mind,
and convince her that she has control over her actions. It also helped her deal with other issues
which were causing her stress and exacerbating her binge drinking. She now finds it easy to stop at
two or three units. (She has also stopped smoking.) "I am at a point where I will happily say
during an evening's drinking, 'Shall we just have a cup of tea?' instead of, 'Come on, let's do
some shots'."/ppstrongBe proactive, and prepared to lie/strong/ppSince her successful hypnotherapy
sessions, Sarah still follows some tried and tested practical steps to help control her drinking.
And I can vouch for the fact that these tips work even if you haven't been hypnotised (I've always
found hypnotism a bit freaky). "Always order a glass of water with every alcoholic drink," says
Sarah, "and drink them simultaneously. Stick to small drinks: be firm if someone insists on you
having a large glass. If they complain, tell them you prefer small glasses because the drink stays
colder." Be prepared for hostility, she adds: "A few people I used to work with did not respond to
it well because they felt it was a judgment on them. I would just say: 'Get lost.'"/ppIf it gets
too much, says Foster, resort to fibbing. "Pretend you're taking antibiotics, that you have a big
meeting the next day or that you have a hangover. Drinking less can be a big social problem -
people feel guilty about it. They feel they have to fit in with the social environment by drinking
too much." In my experience, this is not always the case: I was with a very drunk friend the other
night and apologised for ordering a Diet Coke. "You don't have to jushtify yourself to me," he
slurred. The truth is, most people are too distracted by their own drinking to notice yours./ppThe
other advice I have assiduously followed over the past six months is screamingly obvious, but it
works. "It's all common sense really - eat before going out," says Don Shenker, chief executive of
Alcohol Concern. "And don't drink in rounds," he adds, "because you feel obliged to have another
drink even if you don't really want one." That sounds a bit Scrooge-like to me. My advice is: buy
rounds if you can afford it, just exclude yourself if you want to. /ppstrongIf you can't manage
alcohol-free days, you are in trouble/strong/ppHaving a few days a week when you don't drink at all
is crucial for gaining control of your alcohol consumption, says Foster. But seven out of 10 of her
clients are bemused when she advises this. "Most of the people I see have drunk pretty much every
day since they went to university." Personally, I can go for days without drinking, though, and
then have no idea of moderation when I do drink. Commonly, people who are infrequent binge drinkers
are perfectionists, says Foster. "They're very good when they're not drinking, but as soon as they
drink, their rebelliousness comes out and they become "perfect" at doing the opposite of what
they're supposed to. When I work with someone like that I try to tell them to stop driving the
system so perfectly - because something is going to give." This is me all over./ppstrongExercise
extreme vigilance around free booze/strong/pp"There is a real attitude of, 'If it's free, we are
obliged to consume it'," says Glyde. "It seems rude not to swipe as much free alcohol as possible."
Plus, alcohol is not called a social lubricant for nothing: "Work-related parties can be so
intimidating," she says. "Especially if you are supposed to be networking. Everyone is looking over
their shoulders, gimlet-eyed. The pressure of having to act like someone you're not brings out the
child in all of us. I can remember spitting wine over a company director once and thinking, 'Aren't
I clever? I'm really pissed, but I don't care.'" If you are aware of all these factors, have
admitted to yourself that you are nervous or intimidated, then you don't have to get caught up in
them./ppShenker's key party survival suggestion is to avoid top-ups from waiters: "Finish your
glass and pick up a fresh one so you know exactly how much you've had. Decide in advance how much
you are going to drink and stick to it."/ppstrongIf in doubt, don't drink at all/strong/ppIf you
are like me, then there will be some times in your life - periods of stress, anxiety or childish
over-excitement - when you are better off not drinking because the risk of getting trolleyed is too
high. Taking the car is my top tip for complete alcohol avoidance in these situations. When I first
resolved never to get drunk again I drove everywhere for weeks and drank nothing. Once you've done
that for a while, when you start drinking again you can re-learn your limits. Now I know how I feel
after one glass (not much different to sober), how I feel after two (a bit merry), and after three
(disastrously drunk and ready to become more so). For the first time in my life I have an idea of
when I am supposed to stop. I can say from experience that it is far more rewarding than letting
gravity decide./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

pWe see a shirtless dude in a cape, his neck draped in chunky necklaces of all types, wearing two
pairs of sunglasses simultaneously then removing them to don some kind of spaceman's helmet. And
all the while he never stops belting out his garage rock tunes with the passion of a Pentecostal
preacher. This my friends is rock'n'roll. Watch as King Khan and his Shrines perform for god on the
top of the world, running through "Welfare Bread" and then "No Regrets" rubbing up against "Land of
the Freak". Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 later this week./p pstrong"Welfare Bread"br //strong

Quote: The Psyclone TouchCharge is wireless in the same way
that track lighting is wireless--which is to say that it really isn't. The contact-based charging
device is available for Xbox ($69.99), Wii ($59.99), and PS3 ($49.99) controllers, with attachments
for the BlackBerry Curve and Pearl, and Motorola RAZR V3 offered as well for an additional $34.99
each.
With attachments for charging two controllers, the TouchCharge cuts cable clutter in half,
requiring only one AC adapter in place of two USB charging cables for a PlayStation 3. The PS3
version is compatible with the built-in rechargeable batteries included with each controller,
though Xbox and Wii users will have to shell out some extra cash for rechargeable batteries
(included in the elevated price of respective TouchCharge units).
To receive power from the TouchCharge, controllers and cell phones can be in contact with any
section of the charging pad, so with some fancy maneuvering, you could in theory charge more than
two devices simultaneously.
Starting at $49.99, the TouchCharge is not a huge investment, but until it can charge my devices
completely wirelessly without the need for attachments, I'm going to stick to the included power
cables. Psyclone TouchCharge models for gaming controllers are available at Best Buy, while cell
phone charging pads and attachments can be purchased through WildCharge. Source: Gearlog /

not placed on a team, on the Bobcats, or on the Thunder, the game would crash when attempting to
load the player model in the create player screen or in-game. This issue has been
addressed./liliExiting Game Mode Crash A crash was identified when the user attempted to leave a

above, a few users were seeing a crash when attempting to perform a development drill after loading
an Association file. The triggering issue has been identified and resolved./liliSubstitution Issue

first free throw of an online game had a variable amount of lag depending on which camera was
chosen for the shot. We have corrected this issue by asserting a fixed camera for this shot that
eliminates any controller lag. In addition to this, the make window for free throws in online play
has been increased to account for the timing difference./liliWaiting For Opponent Users with poor

that were taken off the roster weren t healing. The game now properly detects injured players and
heals them in the appropriate time frame regardless of where they are placed on the roster./liliPS3
Voice / Team-Up An issue was uncovered where voice chat would drop or become intermittent when more
than two users were talking simultaneously. This issue has been resolved./liliTeam-Up Cameras The
Broadcast camera for Team-Up has been optimized to show the user a better balance of their player,
the ball, and they player they should be guarding. Also, 2K Cam has been added to the list of
cameras the user can use during Team-Up play./li/ul pspan style="font-weight: bold;"Gameplay/span/p
ulliSubbing Fouled Out Player A bug was found where you could substitute in a player who had
previously fouled out, only when using the quick-sub method of the On-The-Fly Coaching
menu./liliResetting Substitutions When the user queued up substitutions via the On-The-Fly Coaching
feature, re-accessing the feature before the substitutions actually took place would cause the subs
to be reset such that the user would have to manually perform them again. We have addressed this
issue./liliPoints Off Turnovers It was discovered that this statistic was not calculating correctly
when it is reported to the server for online league games. We have isolated the issue in the AI and
have addressed the problem such that the stat is correctly reported./liliDouble Dribble Issue By
performing a sequence of moves that ended in a hop step, the user was able to perform a double
dribble. This issue has been corrected./liliJab Step Fixes The Jab Step move has been reconstructed
to be more balanced in the post. Specifically, it should not be effective in user vs. user games
unless the ball-handler touches a href="http://ps3.qj.net/tags/the-defender/4027" id="tag"
title=""the defender/a. Also, performing the Jab Step should no longer make the defense go back
when the ball-handler loses the dribble./liliPoints in the Paint In an effort to increase user
satisfaction, we have tuned interior defense in combination with shooting percentages for shots
taken in the paint. The result is something we feel will be more in-line with what our users are
expecting./liliShooting Percentages Continuing with the above description, we have tuned down shot
success of perimeter shots when the defender is amply covering the offensive player taking the
shot./liliPlayVision PlayVision in Team-Up was showing everyone s starting point with no indication
on which was yours. We have changed the behavior to only show the floor art for the player you are
controlling./liliGeneral Fixes A large number of other smaller issues have been addressed with the
aim of increasing user satisfaction. These changes, while minor, have improved the quality of
gameplay./li/ul brDid you get all that? With the NBA season heating up the way it's doing right
now, it'll be nice to relive the action in-game minus the crappy bugs. Did you happen to catch
