Secure built products around static analysis of C, C++, and Java code for security vulnerabilities. It was very cool software and allowed me to do a lot of C, C++ and Java hacking as well as the usual big pile of Python. I also did more Windows development than I#8217;d ever done before, and let#8217;s just say it#8217;s nice to be working for the makers of Ubuntu now! Unfortunately mdash; or maybe strongfortunately/strong mdash; Secure did not overwhelm in the market and, here I am!/p pI#8217;ve been pretty lucky to work at some great places, though my career has been pretty eclectic. I#8217;ve been able to do a lot of open source and free software, both officially and incidentally in my career. I won#8217;t bore you with the ten page resume though./p pstrongMatthew: How did you get into free software?/strong/p pstrongBarry:/strong Well, I#8217;m an old timer so I#8217;ve actually been into free software probably before the term was even invented! My first real software job was as a summer intern at the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST), a US Federal research lab in suburban Maryland. I was hacking on homebrew graphics systems for robotic real time control and visualization, and most of the work was in FORTH. There was a pretty vibrant FORTH community and we shared lots of code, often by 8#8243; floppy disks, 9 track tapes and over the original ARPAnet and uucp. I continued with NBS/NIST after I graduated college and our lab eventually migrated to early SunOS systems. By that time I was learning C and hacking Unix, Emacs, window systems, etc. Back then at least, the software that US federal employees wrote was not subject to copyright (because it was taxpayer funded), so it was easy to give away, and it#8217;s always seemed very natural for me to share code./p pA few years ago I searched some of the various Usenet archives for early postings of mine. I think my first public post was of some Emacs trinket I wrote in 1985. It was probably what eventually became Supercite. In any case, tapping into that culture and its social interactions really got me hooked. I made a lot of friends online and I#8217;ve been very luck to keep many of them and even meet some of them in the real world./p pstrongMatthew: What#8217;s more important? I also tend to scratch my own itch, and hosting projects on Launchpad and using Bazaar makes that just incredibly easy. This means that #8220;apt-cache show apt#8221; (or synaptic) will display a german translation if the user has a default german locale. Translating those this is a big task, there are plenty of packages so there are plenty of descriptions. /p pTo make working with the translations of these descriptions in launchpad easier there is a now new website that sorts the package descriptions and presents them in a nice and easy way. I had flown Daniel over for the purposes of a face-to-face catch-up and to record some MOTU videos for the a href=http://www.youtube.com/ubuntudevelopersUbuntu Developer Channel/a. It was a productive few days, and in our many meetings we sowed the seeds for an idea which I am proud to announce today./p pAs I have mentioned in previous posts, one of the most important aspects of community management is in breaking down workflow and understanding how to improve it. We have done this in a number of areas in the Ubuntu world with bugs, patches, LoCo Teams, events and key parts of the wider community picture. When we launch any initiative we pay close attention to the growth and impact of that initiative on the community and this often gives us an insight into the rock stars in our community - the contributors who do lots of good, measurable, referencable work./p pWhen I meet with the horsemen, we regularly talk about these rockstars in our community. On every call we get jazzed about their contributions to Ubuntu. Although we knew about many areas of contribution - people who are rocking on 5-A-Day, new MOTU and core-dev developers, people who are doing great work in the forums etc, our approach was somewhat incomplete. Although we horsemen focus on these rockstars and none of this information is private, the figures and statistics that show off this good work is spread across different places. In addition to this, we were concious that we are always only seeing part of the picture - what about rockstars in translations, upstream bug triage, the sponsorship queue, Launchpad contributors etc? Every time someone rocks a part of our community, they should be recognised./p pThis raised another issue - some people can be emmeasured/em as rockstars - we can count their contributions in the community, but some people span a range of different kinds of contribution, many of which can#8217;t be measured statistically. We wanted these people to be recognised as well and write a more personal showcase of their efforts. With these driving considerations, it was now time to be inspired by Guitar Hero. I know, I know, that may seem a little odd, but stay with me#8230;/p pThere are many fascinating communities out there outside of Free Software, and gaming comunities offer many insights. One such example is Guitar Hero - the online collaborative play aspect of Guitar Hero an interesting part of how they have built a faithful following of players. Where this really piqued my interest was in how high scores play such an encouraging role to members of that community. Players really put in the time to practise and get their scores up and enjoy the sense of peer respect that results from this in the Guitar Hero fishbowl. Interestingly, when we launched 5-A-Day, complete with the contributor and team rankings, we also picked up on a strong sense of pride by participants in their scores. We have also seen similar results from pride over karma in Launchpad. Our community is built on pride and respect, and I was keen to explore how we could centralise this./p pWhile in the meeting room, I grabbed a pen and started fleshing out a design. Here we will be showcasing contributors across the community that are doing excellent work. Here we will write a little blurb about what they have done, their achievements and their personality. Importantly, we have added a feature in which you can click the emThank /em button and the Hall Of Fame will look up your Launchpad account and add your profile picture to the article to show that you would like to thank that contributor. This was an important feature - we wanted to make it as easy as possible to show featured contributors that you appreciate their work. Now it is just one click away! Prôner de tels travaux aurait pour but de féliciter les efforts produits pour obtenir de telles réalisations et par la même occasion de faire un peu plus connaître les projets sélectionnés. La catégorie "Zéro de l'année" s'est vue radiée, dans le but de ne pas solliciter un Zéro en particulier et, puisque cela ne ferait pas très juste, il est impossible, selon nous, de juger correctement le meilleur Zéro de l'année en étant le plus juste possible. La nomination se base sur la clarté du site, son design principalement ainsi que sa facilité d'accès. Le logo sera aussi jugé et le slogan également (un site-design doit en posséder un). En deuxième temps, le site sera jugé sur les services graphiques qu'il propose aux membres et sur leur qualité et rapidité. En dernier lieu (pour départager), la nomination se base sur des critères communs à tous les sites ;/li liMeilleur site d'enseignement : récompense tout site diffusant du contenu à but d'apprentissage, qu'il soit de nature informatique, scolaire ou autre. La nomination se base sur la facilité d'accès, le contenu riche ou pas, la véracité des dits et principalement l'orthographe ainsi que la typographie générale du site. D'autres critères secondaires tels que le design, la mise en page ou encore une éventuelle communauté du site seront jugés ;/li liMeilleur projet libre : récompense tout projet libre créé par un Zéro. Il peut y avoir 4 catégories qui peuvent se proposer : meilleur logiciel libre - meilleur jeu vidéo libre - meilleur mini-OS libre - meilleur autre projet libre. Cependant un seul gagnant sera retenu. La nomination se base principalement sur la qualité du code, la philosophie du projet libre ainsi que sur sa facilité d'accès.
