In a stunning attempt at making us afraid to pick up another Samsung DAP ever again, Samsung's
set-up for its new YP-Q1 and
YP-U4 players was in the ass end of the huge Samsung hall at IFA, with lights enough to cook a
chicken and some technical errors to boot. For starters, the Q1 (pictured) is just a pain to use,
with capacitive touch controls that only work through tapping in the four directions (or center for
select), instead a more natural scrolling motion. The screen is nothing special, and the interface
seems a step back from Samsung's other full-featured DAPs. If we were to say anything positive, the
Q1 does feel nice and solid in the hand, but it's nowhere near as thin or sexy as it could / should
be. The U4 we tested wasn't charged, and had rather infuriating surface and side controls that made
us a little happy it wasn't. It's nowhere near as sexy in person as it was in those press shots,
and could do to lose a few millimeters here and there.
I'm preparing to get a new mobile device and unless the new iPods coming out in September are
upgraded with cameras/speakers, etc. (and possibly even if they are) I will need to get an iPhone
3G.
So my question is, what's the best way to go about getting one, without running afoul of
Satan (Rogers)? :)
I am in British Columbia and am very familiar with Rogers so I consider doing business with them a
non-starter for moral reasons. I have convinced myself that using the device (iPhone) in ways the
manufacturer and distributor don't want me too (unlocking), is now to be preferred
ethically speaking, over the clearly unethical practices I would be supporting by going with
Rogers. In other words, I am prepared to violate the contract because to support it is to support a
greater "wrong" than the contract violation itself.
So in looking at my options on eBay and Craigslist, I got very confused very quickly. Some people
claim they can unlock 3G, some say it isn't possible; some say that it's possible to legally buy an
unlocked 3G phone in Canada, some say it's impossible.
Where do I go to get a 3G white iPhone that I can (possibly) unlock?
If I unlock it, can I get a Canadian phone company to support a voice only function with a
non rogers SIM?
Do I need to initially buy one with a Rogers/Fido sim in it even if I am ultimately not going
to use Rogers/Fido?
How many of these iPhones are stolen? Is it possible to get a non-stolen one? (a lot of the
ads *are* from Surrey ;) )
If I just want voice only, can I use a sim from Virgin/Bell etc.?
I don't really care about the cost of the device, but what I want to end up with is a 16GB
white iPhone that I can use as an iPod/camera for now but be able to unlock it at some point with a
voice only contract from basically any other Canadian telco but Rogers. Is this even possible? I'm
sure many have done this already and I would be grateful for any concrete advice.
TrekStor has
this interesting piece of kit on display at IFA, the Wireless SoundBox. It all starts with a USB
stick attached the computer. From there, your music is streamed wirlessly at a distance up to
25-meters to up to 20 of the boxy, 2.4GHz speakers. The 4x battery (AA, presumably) speakers
feature a nice to touch, "softtouch" coating, individual volume controls, and line-in for
connecting audio sources directly. The sound quality was about on par with what we'd expect from
such a tiny speaker but the range was quite good considing the level of public 2.4GHz noise on the
IFA show floor. €50 (about $74) takes home the stereo starter set (USB stick and 2x speakers)
with each additional speaker costing €30 (about $44) starting in October. See our attempt to
run away with 'em after the break.

It wasn't easy finding a restaurant open in August in Paris, but not only did we manage it, but the
one we picked turned out to be... delicious! We must be the
last people on earth to know about L’Ebauchoir (well actually, we'd been before but forgotten
about it since. Olivier from one of our hotels kindly
reminded us!). The restaurant's website is translated into five languages, including Japanese and
Chinese(!), and they have an impressive number of stickers in the window testifying to their
presence in various international guide books year upon year.
So, if it’s in all the guides, it’s probably a tourist trap right? Well we decided to
find out whether all the press was just hype or the mark of genuine quality.
The restaurant is in the east of town, down a small backstreet that you could easily miss. Yet it
would seem that people from all over the world make their pilgrimage here, spurred on by glowing
reviews in their guidebooks. And frankly, it’s worth it. Look beyond the slightly rustic
(i.e. slightly exaggerated) ‘frenchiness’ of the place and
you’ll find an inventive menu and – frankly - some rather good
cooking.
Let’s imagine that this review is sponsored by the word
‘delicious’. We started off with a glass of delicious sparkling
white wine. Usually, any sparkling wine that is not champagne gets bad press, but ours was lovely
(and went straight to our heads!).
So, time to look at the menu!
Deciding to share a starter, we went for the tomato and aubergine charlotte with basil. The
aubergine was a little difficult to find, and the olive oil had such a strong taste that it more or
less drowned out all the other ingredients, but the crunchy pieces of olive and
– surprise! – small pieces of Chinese noodle made
it an interesting way to get our taste buds up and running.
After a short break, the main courses arrived. The seabass with aniseed butter was absolutely
delicious, a very surprising and original mix of tastes.
The roasted pollack with aubergine caviar and basil-infused olive oil was also a great success,
despite the fact that – once again – the taste of
the aubergine was so subtle as to be almost completely absent. However, the pesto was delicious and
small roasted potatoes served on the side made up for things. Really delicious!
We also ordered a side dish of mashed potatoes with truffles. Very creamy, but the taste of the
truffles must be too subtle for me to pick it out... ;-)
Of course, a real restaurant should be judged on its desserts, often a weak spot (perhaps the chefs
prefer to concentrate on the meat?). We were very impressed: the apple and raspberry crumble was
not too sugary and very obviously fresh, served with a small scoop of creamy ice cream.
However the real showstopper was the grandma-style rice pudding, served in a giant dish with a
spoon so you can serve yourself as much as you like. We thought it looked enormous, but a few
minute later quite a lot of it had disappeared…
The service during our meal was professional and friendly, although they seem to ask for everyone
to arrive at the same time (around 8pm), meaning that the first hour of the evening is a little
frantic (for everyone). The décor has enough authenticity to charm foreigners and it’s a
great place for anyone looking for a great Parisian meal without going to a stuffy gastronomic
joint. It’s almost certainly too late to call it a ‘find’, but
at least here’s one restaurant where you can believe the hype.
Check out their lovely blog, which has lots of great recipes to try out.
For your meal, you'll probably pay around 50 euros per person including win and coffee. Not a bad
deal at all.
Here's our little slideshow with a few more photos, but you'll see a lot more if you go to the
Flickr page here.

okay, so i have been screwing around with advance map and advanve text and other various pokemon
modding programs,
i feel that im ready to tackle a whole pokemon game, but i want to know that people will actually
play it and that my efforts wont be wasted
i will not accept any donations and i will also not make 6 threads about this one rom:rolleyes:
(kinda funny that all the similar threads listed above are by him...)
but anyway, this is what i need you to decide right now
what game should i use as a base? this includes fire red, leaf green, ruby, sapphire, or
emerald
also what should the starters be, and i nice name for the game, i already know what the story line
be, and dont bother because i will not be telling it to anyone until its fully established.
yes i know that since school is coming there is some risk as to me not being able to finish it,
however even if progress is slowed it still will be finished.
OK, so basically I got my ipod touch pretty soon after release. I jailbroke it right away and I
haven't changed the firmware since (currently still on 1.1.1). Now I see 2.x is out with a totally
re-written framework, it seems logical to upgrade. So for starters, is 2.0 the one to go with, or a
lower version to keep functionality and compatibility? Also, what technique and steps should I use
to update to the new firmware? Can I go straight from 1.1.1 to whatever? And lastly, if anyone is
feeling kind enough to sum it up for me breifly, what is new that I should know about?!
p.s. Hope this is the right section! Sorry if it isn't, feel free to move it :)
