Microsoft's Internet business is going to require one hell of a talent. Not because there aren't
worthwhile assets there, and not because Microsoft lacks resources or conviction. Just because
Microsoft has had 13 years to get its Internet act together, and it has failed to do it, and we
just don't see what is likely to change now. We also know that this is not even remotely about

listrongMission./strong Microsoft has about a dozen different Internet businesses: search, display,

"Microsoft's Internet business" just isn't going to cut it. Neither is the grab-bag of brands

Windows and Office (and Steve Ballmer would be an idiot to run the company any other way). We
assume that means that every time Dr. Lu does something that might annoy or threaten the Windows or

Microsoft's Internet business is still burning billions of dollars a year. Even clobbered AOL is

Microsoft announced the hire
of
former ten-year Yahoo exec Dr. Qi Lu today as
President of their Online Services Group. He’ll report directly to CEO Steve Ballmer.
Here’s the email Ballmer sent to all Microsoft staff forty minutes ago:
From: Steve Ballmer
Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 1:39 PM
To: Microsoft - All Employees (QBDG)
Subject: New Leader of Online Services Group
Search, advertising and online services are critical to Microsoft’s long-term strategy. To
succeed, we need the right talent. Today, I’m pleased to announce that Qi Lu will join
Microsoft as president of our Online Services Group. Qi will oversee all efforts in search, our
online advertising platform, and all of our online information and communications services. Qi
will join Microsoft on Jan. 5 and report to me.
Qi is one of the most respected technical minds in the industry. He comes to Microsoft after 10
years at Yahoo, where he most recently served as executive vice president of engineering for all
of Yahoo’s search and advertising development efforts. Before joining Yahoo, Qi was a
researcher at IBM’s Almaden Research Center. He has a doctorate in computer science from
Carnegie Mellon, and he holds 20 U.S. patents.
Qi’s combination of deep technical expertise, proven leadership capability and broad
business knowledge is rare in our industry. There is no one better qualified to guide our work to
reinvent search and online advertising.
While I’m excited that Qi is joining Microsoft, I’m sorry to share the news that
Brian McAndrews has decided to transition out of the company. Brian came to us with the
acquisition of aQuantive in 2007. Since then, he has helped build a world-class business in
online advertising that provides a solid foundation for future growth. I have great respect for
the important contributions Brian has made to Microsoft, and I wish him the very best in the
future.
On Monday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, Qi will join me at Café RedWest for an Employee Town
Hall. I encourage you to attend or to watch the webcast. If you have questions for Qi or me,
please send them in advance to and we’ll try to answer as many as possible.
Steve

Still/strong/em/a were supposedly put off by the colloquial wisdom of a shit-talking independent
woman, there's a bit less of that here ("fucking fantastic" aside), and a lot more soothing
Dido-ish hooks ready for your next Bed, Bath, and Beyond shopping experience. "I am a weapon of
massive consumption," Allen quips, her talent for wordplay intact if a bit behind. Nor does the
video spare any expense, showing Allen in a Veruca Salt-like (the Roald Dahl character, sadly, not
the band) wonderland of butlers, balloons, and presents. Daddy Warbucks had Annie, and we've got
Lily. Too bad we're broke. (via a href="http://www.thecultureofme.com/" target="_blank"strongthe

br /What it doesbr /br /A visit to this resource will certainly not go amiss for crafters of every
denomination. Broadly speaking, Craft Juice can be defined as a social site where said individuals
can submit their creations for other members of the online community to comment upon and rate. br
brIn this sense, the site could be compared to a sort of launching pad where talent comes to the
fore and has a chance of being spotted right away. br brOnce uploaded, crafts themselves can be
sorted in a plethora of ways. For instance, it is possible to see the ones that were submitted
within a specific timeframe, as well as the ones that are attracting the most attention among site
users and see what the fuss is all about. br brThe site also holds competitions as a way of
fostering user interaction and spicing up interest. For instance, the most recent competition is a
Xmas one, in keeping with the festive season. You can read about it in the section under the
corresponding heading. brbr /br /In their own wordsbr /br /“Craft Juice is a social network
site that allows craft people to add and vote on the world of crafts.”br /br /Why it might be
a killerbr /br /It provides a superb outlet for talent everywhere.br /br /Some questionsbr /br /Is
there an option for visualizing the most popular crafts that were ever submitted to the site?br /br

pThis little chunk of jittery goodness has been out for a minute, showcasing the talents and
playfulness of twenty-something wunderkind Hudson Mohawke. The pretty little track jerks along
while pleasantly balancing techno, electro, hip-hop and, dare it be said, IDM. While Hud Mo
declares it "emotronic", it's also part of a whole school of tunes that Pitchfork's own Martin
Clark has adeptly labelled "wonky". The name does capture the feel of "Velvet Peel" as well of the
work of some of Hud Mo's compadres: fellow Glaswegian a href="http://www.myspace.com/rustiebeetz"

Secret gay party
outed in Mongolia: "On November 15, an intentionally hidden and exclusive party was held at
Amazon Club, in Bayazurkh Palace. Gay men, lesbian women, bisexual and transgender individuals
(LGBT), and friends of these minorities, congregated to socialize with one another and to
celebrate their sexual identities. The main festivity was the annual 'Mr. Beauty' contest. With a
pool of eleven male-to-female cross-dressers, judges determined who made the most beautiful woman
through a sequence of swimsuit, gown, and talent competitions...The party’s secret location
(which changes each month and is not released until a few days before the event) and the strict
security guards, were not enough to maintain LGBT privacy in the insular capital. One week after
‘Mr. Beauty’, a post on a Mongolian website revealed the existence of
the party, and disclosed names of attendees. Few positive, and many negative comments were posted
in response."

Conservative Episcopal church leaders announce intention to found rival
denomination: "Conservatives alienated from the Episcopal Church announced on Wednesday that
they were founding their own rival denomination, the biggest challenge yet to the authority of
the Episcopal Church since it ordained an openly gay bishop five years ago. The move threatens
the fragile unity of the Anglican Communion, the world’s third-largest Christian body, made
up of 38 provinces around the world that trace their roots to the Church of England and its
spiritual leader, the Archbishop of Canterbury."
