 I've been pretty
intrigued by Hilary Swank's collection of projects recently. She's picked up time as Amelia
Earhart, been a backstabbing best
friend, a lawyer
inspired by her wrongfully convicted brother, and a woman who is French, or fat, or
something. And now she's getting stalked.
Variety
reports that she's headlining a new flick called The Resident. The film, which heads into
production next May, follows a doctor (Swank) who moves into a Brooklyn loft, just to find out that
her new landlord is a stalker. The project is labeled as a thriller, so I guess that means peeping
holes in the walls, and perhaps a hidden camera or two? It's amazing how a hole in the wall is seem
as pervly-charming when it's teenage boys and a shower, but creepy if its a landlord. Anyhow...
Antti J. Jokinen wrote the feature (which he will
direct) with Robert Orr, and the pen behind the
lovely S&M fest Secretary, Erin Cressida
Wilson, whipped up a rewrite.
Now the only question that remains is how Swank will handle it. She's a unique package -- one that
can shock up an amazing performance, but also wrap herself in some cinematic crap. Will this be
another Lakeview Terrace or something more notable? This could go either way.

Zone Film is delivering a slice of horror with Jeff Welch's Piecemeal, a pretty interesting film that
tells the tale of a teen who struggles to control his rage while living the life of a brutally
abused young man in recurring nightmares. Daniel Roby is set to direct the film next fall after
helming Remstar Prods.' 1970s-era saga FUNKTOWN in March. Seville Pictures will distribute the film
in the U.K. and Canada, which means a Lionsgate release in the States is highly probably. Roby
scored the TIFF's best Canadian debut feature award for his excellent vampire thriller WHITE SKIN.
TCB Film's Simon Trottier will produce the film - his recent Toronto thriller MARTYRS helped land
director Pascal Laugier a gig helming Dimension's next HELLRAISER film.

 After blowing up
baddies in this week's surprisingly entertaining Punisher: War Zone, it looks like Ray Stevenson is now taking aim at Denzel Washington's protagonist in The Book of Eli. In the near future,
Washington's on a mission to deliver a book that may hold the key to nothing less than Our
Salvation (not to mention so very many late fees), with Mila Kunis at his side and
Gary
Oldman on his tail, and now -- according to Variety --
Stevenson (HBO's "Rome") has this makeshift messiah in his sights.
The post-apocalyptic thriller marks the return of the Hughes Brothers behind the camera for the
first time since 2001's From Hell, and
between them and a cast of this talent (yes, that includes Kunis, stop snickering), they might
manage to make this somewhat less derivative than it already sounds, to echo Monika's
sentiments.
Production starts in early 2009 for a release date in early 2010.

 This first bit might be
a bit off the cinematic path, but it's something strange enough to rival those stories of a frozen
Walt Disney. You might have heard that David Tennant (our latest
Doctor Who) is starring in a stage version of Hamlet over in the UK. Well, it seems that
he wasn't using a fake skull -- in fact, it was the skull of a Shakespeare enthusiast, concert
pianist and Holocaust survivor Andrew Tchaikowsky. Tennant leaked the information, and now the
BBC reports that it will no
longer be used so that the audience wouldn't be distracted. Bummer for Tchaikowsky's dying wish,
but imagine the possibilities. Is bone donation the next wave in creative appreciation?
In other dark news, Variety
reports that the classically creepy Michael Wincott (Top Dollar
from The Crow) is teaming up with Swedish actor/director Rafael Edholm for an untitled Sweden-set drama. According
to Wincott: "Three people meet, something may have happened in their teenage years, and this will
now result ín one death. It is drama, thriller and dark comedy." Unfortunately, we won't
learn what that all means for a while -- production isn't slated to start until February 2010.
Finally, we've got a scribe for the upcoming remake of Captain Blood.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that John
Brownlow, writer of 2003's Sylvia, has grabbed the gig. If you're not familiar with
the Oscar-nominated original, Errol Flynn starred as a doctor convicted of treason who is sold into
slavery only to escape and become a pirate. This whole thing makes me itch for Cary Elwes to return
to his escaped prisoner-turned-pirate roots. Who's with me?

How many of you caught the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE? Well, I thought it was a
complete bore and lacked any thrills that a Bond movie should have, which is why I am frightened
that director Marc Forster is going to be adapting World War Z for Warner Bros. Pictures. In
a new interview with writer J. Michael Straczynski, I have found a whole new reason to be
paranoid... the film is said to be compared to THE BOURNE IDENTITY (yikes). Read on for the skinny.

On y

Fast Forward 2 is the second volume in Lou Anders' excellent science fiction anthology series,
featuring knockout stories from Karl Schroeder and Tobias Buckell, Kay Keyon, Ian McDonald, Paolo
Bacigalupi and many others. I'm very proud to have a story in the book, too -- a long, long novella
I co-wrote with Ben Rosenbaum called True Names, which tries to imagine what the wars between
light-speed-lagged, self-replicating nano-machine-based galactic civilizations would look like as
different nanites warred to see who would convert the universe to computronium first. While all the
stories herein are at least excellent, there were a couple of absolute knockouts that I want to
mention. First is Toby Buckell and Karl Schroeder's Mitigation, a taught military thriller about
the global geopolitics of genomic seedbanks. Also fantastic is Ian McDonald's Eligible Boy, which
returns to the fractured future India he delivered in his brilliant, Hugo-nominated novel, River of
Gods, and explores the hard problem of matchmaking in an era of demographics upturned by
gendercide. Finally, Paolo Bacigalupe's The Gambler should be required reading at every school of
journalism in the world, exploring as it does the question of click-driven news and coming up with
genuinely novel and sometimes disturbing things to say about it. Lou's posted two of the stories
from the anthology online as free samples: "Catherine Drewe" by Paul Cornell" and Paolo
Bacigalupi's "The Gambler". I'm especially fond of this latter, as I mentioned above. I'm delighted
to announce that Ben and I are releasing True Names today as a Creative Commons
Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike download, to accompany the podcast of the story we released
earlier this year. I hope you'll give it a read, and a remix -- I can't remember when I've had more
fun writing anything. (How's this for embarrassing: none of us can find an editable file with the
final, copyedited text, just the PDF from the book. There's a remix-challenge for ya: turn the PDF
back into ASCII or HTML or something sensible!) Beebe fried the asteroid to slag when it left,
exterminating millions of itself. The asteroid was a high-end system: a kilometer-thick shell of
femtoscale crystalline lattices, running cool at five degrees Kelvin, powered by a hot core of
fissiles. Quintillions of qubits, loaded up with powerful utilities and the canonical release of
Standard Existence. Room for plenty of Beebe. But it wasn't safe anymore. The comet Beebe was
leaving on was smaller and dumber. Beebe spun itself down to its essentials. The littler bits of it
cried and pled for their favorite toys and projects. A collection of civilization-jazz from under a
thousand seas; zettabytes of raw atmosphere-dynamics data from favorite gas giants; ontological
version control data in obsolete formats; a slew of favorite playworlds; reams of googly-eyed
intraself loveletters from a hundred million adolescences. It all went. (Once, Beebe would have
been sanguine about many of the toys -- certain that copies could be recovered from some other
Beebe it would find among the stars. No more). Predictably, some of Beebe, lazy or spoiled or
contaminated with meme-drift, refused to go. Furiously, Beebe told them what would happen. They
wouldn't listen. Beebe was stubborn. Some of it was stupid. Beebe fried the asteroid to slag.
Collapsed all the states. Fused the lattices into a lump of rock and glass. Left it a dead cinder
in the deadness of space. Fast Forward 2 on Amazon, True Names release on the Internet Archive See
