CWmike writes "Gregg Keizer sifted through many threads of e-mails released under the 'Vista
Capable' lawsuit to dig up this jewel...More than a year before Windows Vista's release —
and long before Apple started poking fun at the OS — Microsoft officials were already
worried about comparisons between Mac OS X and Vista. An e-mail thread from October 2005 showed
that an article in the Wall Street Journal by Walt Mossberg grabbed the attention of managers at
Microsoft. In a column headlined What PC to Buy If You Are Planning On a Vista Upgrade, Mossberg
alarmed one Windows manager who forwarded a bit from the column.... 'You won't have to worry about
Vista if you buy one of Apple Computer's Macintosh computers, which don't run Windows,' Mossberg
had written. 'Every mainstream consumer doing typical tasks should consider the Mac. Its operating
system, called Tiger, is better and more secure than Windows XP, and already contains most of the
key features promised for Vista.' Warrier added a comment of his own: 'A premium experience as
defined by Walt = Apple. This is why we need to address [the column].'"

Hi guys,
To cut a long story short, I now have 3 eMacs as listed below....
1 ... 800 MHz - CD drive - 40 gig Hard drive - 768 RAM - Internally busted so no image on
screen.
2 ... 800 MHz - CD drive - 60 gig Hard drive - 768 mb RAM - Panther - Works fine
3 ... 1000 MHz - Superdrive - 80 gig HD - 640 mb RAM - Tiger - Awful looking case - Works fine.
I also have a suitable 512 mb RAM chip. I plan to use the RAM from the busted one and the spare
chip to max out the two working eMacs and fit Airport extreme cards but it's the case I need a bit
of help with.
The faster of the eMacs was used in an office and is full of stickers. It also has several gouges
out of it and even big globs of paint. (Luckily there are none near the fan area or on the front) I
was toying with the idea of removing the rear case of the duff eMac which is fantastically clean
and swapping it with this rear cover from HELL. The only snag is that, being different models, will
it fit? Are the screw holes the same? Do the switches and sockets all line up?
Does anybody know?
Cheers,
Steve

If you didn't already know the leopard (and tiger) dock is an application that can be found in
HD/System/Library/Dock. But my question is "Can someone copy that application, then either email
it, put it on a USB drive, or make it downloadable then somone elese wo is recieveing it can just
apply it as their new dock?". In the situation that somone with leopard would rather just have the
dock from Tiger as their default or Vice Versa. If so will it work normally? Thanks. :)

Hey. I was upgrading from Tiger to Leopard and decided I wanted to quit the upgrade to do it
another time. After selecting my HD to boot up from, the computer restarted and would not start up.
It is stuck at the start up screen where the circle keeps going around. What should I do? Thanks.

I have a desktop Imac intel based computer running Leopard, and a intel based macbook running Tiger
and I set up a network in which i can access the tiger shared folder from my leopard but i can't
access the Leopard from my tiger. I am sure that I go to "GO" then "network" on my tiger to view
folders on my leopard network but when i do it is blank. My Leopard is connected to the router
through an ethernet port and my Tiger to the router through the Airport. All folders on both
computers are set up to share with "everyone" and Appletalk is activated on my tiger via the
airport and Leopard via the ethernet connection. How do I solve this??

YouTube is inviting musicians to upload videos of them playing a part in a symphony composed by Tan Dun (of
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Later on, entries will have the chance to be combined
into what YouTube calls a “collaborative virtual performance.” Additionally, winners
are promised to get a chance to perform at New York City’s Carnegie Hall next year. [Thanks

pimg src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/google-gears.png" width="150" height="58"/We recently
had the opportunity to meet with two senior executives at Google. At the Web 2.0 Summit in San
Francisco, ReadWriteWeb editor Richard MacManus and I met with Dave Girouard, President of Google
Enterprise. Then a few weeks later, I met with Vic Gundotra, VP of Engineering, via video
conference. Both meetings provided some interesting background - but the one question that keeps
returning and that was not so well answered is: why is Google not deploying Gears aggressively?/p p
align="right"emSponsor/embr /a href='http://d.openx.org/ck.php?n=12733amp;cb=12733'
target='_blank'img src='http://d.openx.org/avw.php?zoneid=861amp;cb=12733amp;n=12733' border='0'
alt='' align="right" //a/p h2What Is Gears?/h2 pAs explained on a
href="http://code.google.com/apis/gears/gears_faq.html#whatIsGears"Google's FAQ/a:/p p"Gears is an
open-source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline.
Gears provides three key features:/p ulliA local server, to cache and serve application resources
(HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server;/li liA database, to store and
access data from within the browser;/li liA worker thread pool, to make web applications more
responsive by performing expensive operations in the background."/li/ul pThat is important. The
biggest single hurdle to mass adoption of web-based office software is the inability to use it when
online access is not possible (in airplanes and other fun places off the grid). Offline access is
also reassuring for those times when the cloud platform is having trouble: at least you can work
offline for a while. This is not a small feature. It is the big one./p pWe get the usual beta
warnings from Google:/p p"Gears is currently a beta product; moreover, it is currently considered
to be a developer-only release. When the developer community has had a chance to examine, critique,
and improve Gears, a final version suitable for use with production applications will be made
available."/p pBut we learn to ignore these beta designations from Google. Gmail still says beta./p
pBut in this case, Google really is being shy about fully bringing Gears to its own product
line-up./p h2Zoho Is Using Gears. Why Not Google Apps?/h2 pZoho started using a
href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/zoho_writer_adds_offline_support.php"Gears in Writer/a
as early as August 2007, nearly 18 months ago. In October 2008, a
href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/zoho_mail_gets_offline_support.php"Zoho Mail went
offline with Gears/a./p pOn March 31st, 2008, a
href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/google_docs_offline_support.php"Google announced Gears
for Docs/a. This was a step forward, albeit 8 months after its competition (Zoho) did it./p pSo,
the big question is, "When will Gmail enable offline use via Gears?" I posed this question to Dave
Grirouard, President of Google Enterprise. The response was along the lines of, making it work on
the scale of Gmail is not a trivial engineering challenge. That sort of made sense. But Gears has
been out for a long time; it is a critical feature, and Google has the best software engineering
talent on the planet./p h2Ahem, What About Chrome?/h2 pAgain, from Google's FAQ:/p p"Gears works on
the following browsers:/p ulliApple Mac OS X (10.4 or higher) ulliFirefox 1.5 or higher/li liSafari
3.1.1 or higher (requires OS X Tiger 10.4.11+ or Leopard 10.5.3+)/li/ul/li liLinux (Requirements)
ulliFirefox 1.5 or higher/li/ul/li liMicrosoft Windows (XP or higher) ulliFirefox 1.5 or higher/li
liInternet Explorer 6 or higher/li/ul/li liMicrosoft Windows Mobile (5 or higher) ulliInternet
Explorer 4.01 or higher/li liThe following devices are not supported ulliSamsung i320 and i320N/li
liOrange SPV C600/li liMotorola Q/li/ul/li/ul/li/ul p Additionally, the team is working on
supporting Safari on Mac OS X in a future release."/p pNotice the elephant not in the room? Yes,
Gears does not work on Chrome. Is that because Chrome does not support extensions?/p pIs Google
holding up Gears until Chrome can support Gears? We hope not. That seems contrary to its philosophy
to date, which has been to couple them very loosely. So that is probably just coincidence./p
h2"Gears for Mobile Is the Holy Grail"/h2 pWe had a fascinating talk with Vic Gundotra (VP of
Engineering) and Sumit Agarwal (Mobile Product Management). They laid out a mobile strategy that
clearly shows that Google is thinking bigger and deeper than anyone else about the future of this
huge market. They were also frank about the scale of the engineering challenge. Looking globally,
there is no dominant mobile device. In fact, it is an extremely fragmented market. That is a
problem when each user expects a native interface./p pVic Gundotra described how about a year ago
Google bet that the mobile browser would be the unifying force. Specifically, the strategy was to
standardize on a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebKit"Webkit-based browsers/a. That makes
sense but still leaves out the all-important offline access question. So, I posed the "What about
Gears?" question. I was told that Gears in a mobile browser was, of course, the "holy grail."/p
h2The Answer Given Is Probably Correct/h2 pGoogle is confirming that Gears is critically important
to both its web apps and its mobile strategy, and that the delay is simply because deploying Gears
on the scale that Google operates is a tough engineering challenge. That seems like the best
explanation. But we would love to hear from our readers. Have you used Zoho Mail with Gears, and
did it work well? Is it simply a scale issue that is delaying Google's more aggressive deployment
of Gears?/p stronga

There's a new way to get to Carnegie Hall -- YouTube, YouTube, YouTube. Borrowing from
"American Idol," the online video site announced plans Monday for a YouTube Symphony Orchestra,
featuring a collaboration of wannabe musicians with Carnegie Hall, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas,
composer Tan Dun and others. Through Jan. 28, musicians can submit entries as they perform two
videos: a display of their musical talents and an interpretation of an original work by Tan, who
won an Academy Award for 2000's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Hi,
I have taken the deep dive and ordered an ATV. My main requirements are to:
- Play DivX avi files
- SFTP upload files to ATV
- Add a USB drive
I am contemplating which "hack" solution to use.
ATVFlash
Seems the most expensive once you go for unlimited updates but has the forum option
Patchstick
Cheaper solution but no forum but good documentation via Wiki. Seems the most advanced - better
hack for USB drive?
Manual Hack
Read details from iClarfied but most of the hacks require a Tiger OSX CD and I have Leopard. So not
sure if I can plus I am a nooobie :)
Which option would people recommend?
Thanks!

Hello. I really hope someone can give me some advice on what I should do with my newly serviced
IMAC. I have had the MAC since 2006 and had no issues with it. The computer had OSX Tiger on it and
I was very happy with it. The MAC is an Intel based MAC with 1GB of RAM, 160GB HD, Leopard
10.5.5.
About a Month ago my hard drive crashed. Could not recover it, or fix it. Had my applecare warranty
still intact so went ahead and took the computer in. Genius folks checked it out and said they
would need to replace the HD. No problems as I had backed up my data using Superduper. Got my
computer back and behold....it has Leopard installed on it with all my data recovered. I was
surprised and also a bit excited to have the new OSX. As I begun to use the system as regularly i
did, I noticed 2 significant changes over the computer I originally took in.
1. System was running signficantly slower. Almost seeing 10 seconds of hang for opening
applications and approx 30 seconds of hang at times during application use.
2. Hard drive makes a lot of noise during write process (which is going on all the time). During
even internet browsing, the hard drive is constantly writing. Noise is loud enough to hear it even
a few feet away from the computer.
What I wanted to find out from the folks on this forum is what your thoughts are? Should I take it
back to Apple and ask them to put my Tiger OSX back on? (already called the store and they said it
is not regular operating procedure to upgrade the OS. May have been needed or a mistake. When I
asked for new start up disc's they said I had to buy the OS. I was a bit annoyed by this response
as I did not ask for the upgrade). Or is my issue more the new hard drive and should i take it back
to apple for the noise and slowness due to this?
I thank you in advance for your help on this. Please let me know if there are any specifics to my
