I have read many accounts of unexplained ipod beeping, and several which suggest it means the ipod
hard drive is toast. Mine is a 20GB 4th gen.classic color screen (A1099). It had a low battery (I
assumed) and would only show up on my itunes device menu after being plugged in a long time, and
never mounted on the desktop of any Mac it was plugged into. So I erased it, reinstalled all the
songs I had on itunes, then went and bought a lithium-polymer battery for that model and installed
it, without running into any problems. I charged the battery through a dock for well over 12 hours,
and the screen of the ipod would still not display. But the ipod icon does appear on my desktop,
and in my device menu with all the songs I had installed on it. I ran through all the reset
procedures for that model. Nothing changed. I let it sit for a month or so, plugged it back into
the dock and computer, got nothing on the ipod screen, but, as before, got every indication that
the hard drive is fine because my songs show up under the device menu, and in the itunes window.
Can't play them though. This time though, the ipod begins to emit clicking sounds every ten seconds
or so, does this for about 15 minutes, then emits 2 beeps close together, continues clicking for
about the same time as before, then emits two pairs of beeps, then goes silent. However, when I do
reset protocols again, the click reappears after 6-8 seconds, but only once each time. No change in
the way it is functioning, or not. No ipod screen image. I also managed to run OSX disk utility on
it once, and it said it was OK, but now when I try to use disk utility it won't unmount the ipod
from the desktop. What gives. Is the logic board gone, or is it in some kind of electrical freeze
that can be corrected. Is the screen gone, or is there some connection problem I can check out. I
did take the screen connector off the board when I had it apart and reconnected it. I believe I did
all the technical hardware procedures correctly, and I'm generally fairly adept at such things. I
did get a message that said using a faster USB port would speed things up, but I hardly think that
is the issue. Hoping for an epiphany.

I'm quite often confused by those who consider themselves big supporters of pure free market
capitalism, but who also are adamant believers in the importance of intellectual property. Perhaps
the largest group of such folks are the so-called "Objectivist" followers of Ayn Rand. Capitalist
Magazine is running an a href="http://capmag.com/article.asp?ID=5358"Objectivist defense of the
recent ProIP law/a that was recently a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20081013/2256222533.shtml"signed into law/a despite
basically being a government handout to the entertainment industry. Stephen Kinsella has a
href="http://www.againstmonopoly.org/index.php?perm=593056000000000190" target="_new"responded to
many of the points made in the original article/a, and picks up on a key point that many defenders
of intellectual property always pull out in their defense: blockquotei The creator of content owns
the content because he created it through his own labor, and you should always own the fruits of
your own labor. /i/blockquote The problem is this just isn't true and never has been. Simply
providing the labor does not equal ownership. As Kinsella notes in his response: blockquotei His
argument? "If a baker bakes a loaf of bread, he therefore owns it." And likewise, for "music,
movies, software." But note the mistake here Johson makes: "If a baker bakes a loaf of bread, he
btherefore/b owns it." The "therefore" is the giveaway: he says this because he thinks of the
creation of the loaf as the act that gives rise to ownership. Then this leads to the analogy with
other created things, like music. But creation of the loaf is not the reason why the baker owns it.
He owns the loaf because he owned the dough that he baked. He already owned the dough, before any
act of "creation"--before he transformed it with his labor. If he owned the dough, then he owns
whatever he transforms his property into; the act of creation is an act of transformation that does
not generate any new property rights. So creation is not necessary for him to own the resulting
baked bread. Likewise, if he used someone else's dough--say, his employer's--then he does not own
the loaf, but the owner of the dough does. So creation is not sufficient for ownership.
/i/blockquote Exactly. Creation alone does not grant property rights if none existed prior to that
transformation. I would even take the argument a step further. Even if you own something due to the
fact that you created it, once you have igiven away/i or isold/i that product, you no longer have
ownership of it -- and claiming you do actually iremoves property rights/i from the lawful owner.
br /br / That is, if I make a loaf of bread, and then sell it to someone, I no longer have control
over that loaf of bread. I cannot tell the new owner that he can only make French toast with it and
cannot feed the bread to the pigeons. That's for the new owner to determine. I certainly cannot
tell him that he cannot take the bread and try to resell it or even give it away to others. That's
part of the free market. Yet, intellectual property enthusiasts ido/i want to remove these property
rights from the recipients of icopies/i of the original good. Despite their claims of being
property rights supporters, they are actually the opposite. They are trying to deny property rights
to any recipient.br /br /a href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20081123/1245112929.shtml"Permalink/a

Hi all,
I'm new in mac world, got my mac book pro recently, and now i'm trying to burn >6gb files to
dual-side dvd. I got dvd's, and are obvious dual-side (cannot make mistake there ;-)), but cannot
make Toast to recognize them as dual side and reports that there is not enough space to store the
files. I've tried to set DVD DL from the drop-down menu, ejected dvd, put it back in, and when
trying to burn it, same thing happens.
Recorder that is in this mac book pro is some Hl-dt-st DVDRW GSA-S10N. I'm not sure if this type of
dvd burner can actually burn dual-side, although there is DVD DL (dual) option in Toast..
Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.

Ponca City, We love you writes A study has confirmed that many people see human facial features in
the front ends of automobiles and ascribe various personality traits to cars. Forty study
participants assessed cars based on a system known as geometric morphometrics by viewing
high-resolution, 3D computer reconstructions and printed images of 38 actual 2004-06 car models and
rating each model on 19 traits such as dominance, maturity, gender, and friendliness, and if they
liked the car. Study participants liked best the cars scoring high in the so-called power traits
mdash; the most mature, masculine, arrogant, and angry-looking ones. Researchers theorized that
over evolutionary time, humans have developed a selective sensitivity to features in the human face
that convey information on sex, age, emotions, and intentions. The lead researcher explained,
Seeing too many faces, even in mountains or toast, has little or no penalty, but missing or
misinterpreting the face of a predator or attacker could be fatal.pa

width="1" height="1" //divpGianfranco Zola handed Chelsea a multitude of reasons to revere him as
their greatest ever player. Last night he gave them cause to toast his move into management as West
Ham restricted Liverpool's rise to the top at an angst-ridden Anfield. Reaching the summit has
rarely been greeted with such bewilderment in these parts./ppLooking down on Chelsea and Manchester
United is the only view Liverpool want this season and, as Rafael Benítez repeatedly said
afterwards, the league table makes pleasant reading today. But - there is always a but - it should
look much better. Benítez knew it, Liverpool's players knew it and the boos that greeted the
final whistle, swift yet audible, showed a frustrated home support knew it, too. A second
successive 0-0 draw at home to mid-table opposition was not the response of championship
contenders. For the second league game in succession, Liverpool were left to reflect on an
opportunity wasted./pp"We have one more point than Chelsea now so, if we can beat Blackburn at the
weekend, we will stay top of the table," said Benítez, spelling out the facts. "Yes we are
frustrated again, it is clear we deserved to win and some people can be disappointed. We are
disappointed. But we are also top of the table and the fans will enjoy seeing the table
tomorrow."/ppLiverpool were dominant last night and but for an inspired performance in the West Ham
goal from Robert Green they would have achieved their aim of establishing a three-point lead over
Chelsea. Yet this was a far more satisfying evening for the genial Italian than the ambitious
Spaniard who, with George Gillett in attendance, called on Liverpool's joint-owners to conclude
talks on his contract extension as soon as possible. "I am waiting for a communication,"
Benítez said. "Maybe we have to finish the conversations now and just think about the
football."/ppHis contract had no bearing on this stalemate, however, and only two errant offside
decisions against Carlton Cole late on, plus a wild miss from the substitute Luis Boa Morte,
prevented Zola's plan of containment and counter from working to perfection. The visitors' point
was delivered around the outstanding Green, Matthew Upson and James Collins, although a lack of
confidence in front of goal from Liverpool also contributed to the outcome. Robbie Keane,
substituted to his obvious disbelief for the 15th time in his brief Liverpool career, was a notable
but far from isolated culprit in the absence of the injured Fernando Torres./ppBenítez and
Jamie Carragher had pleaded for patience from the crowd following the frustration of being held to
0-0 by Fulham last month. Liverpool also gave their backing to the family of Michael Shields last
night, the fan jailed for allegedly attacking a Bulgarian waiter after the Champions League Final
in 2005, as they campaign for his release before a judicial review on Thursday. Once the Kop's
mosaic of "Free Michael Now" had come down, the siege of Green's goal began. But this was a night
that would stretch reserves of patience to the limit./ppCole cleared off the goal-line from Albert
Riera, Sami Hyypia headed the first of several invitations over the West Ham bar and saw a second
header blocked on the line by Cole again - all inside the opening 21 minutes. Steven Gerrard and
Dirk Kuyt also missed good openings before the interval, yet it was West Ham who came closer to a
breakthrough when their former Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy beat José Reina from 25 yards
only to see his drive rebound off the inside of a post./ppUntil a pulsating finale, when Kuyt, Boa
Morte, Ryan Babel and Cole traded chances at will, the momentum flowed towards Green. One save from
the former Hammer Yossi Benayoun, to tip the Israeli's half volley at close range, was sublime.
"I've told Robert [Green] that, if he keeps performing like this, he is going to be in the England
team," said Zola, manager of a club that had lost on their seven previous visits to Anfield. "He
has taken some stick this season but now he is getting what he deserves."/ppBenítez denied
reports, however, that Michael Owen would be the January solution to such frustrating nights. "I
can guarantee we are not going for Michael Owen," he said./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right:

Chris reviewed "The Golden Book of
Chemistry Experiments" as well as "Mr Wizard's 400 Experiments in Science", he
writes -
"Mr Wizards 400 Experiments in Science". (Reno: "Emilio Lizardo is a top scientist, dummkopf."
Perfect Tommy: "So was Mr. Wizard." -The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, now available on DVD!).
Written by Mr Wizard himself, Don Herbert with Hy Ruchlis, this book is more about demonstrating
scientific principles and phenomena in the home with less-sophisticated equipment. No beakers and
Bunsen burners, this is all water glasses, pencils, string, tin cans and rubber bands. Just like
the original Mr Wizard shows. This stuff is great. This book, thankfully, is a little more
affordable! There seem to be several reprints of this with different covers, as you can see from
the Amazon link. There's even one called "Soft Blu Bonnet Margarine Presents Mr. Wizard's 400 Easy
Experiments in Science by Don Ruchlis, Hy Herbert". Because when I think of melting something on my
toast, I want to think of chemistry! And who the heck are these Hy Herbert and Don Ruchlis guys? a
