WebEcoist's list of "20 Strange and Exotic Endangered Species" is a sad marvel of incredibly odd
creatures that your kids might never get a chance to see. This is not shopped. This is not a hoax.
That is a giant crab on a garbage can. They’re native to Guam and other Pacific islands.
Coconut crabs aren’t endangered, per se, but due to tropical habitat destruction they are at
risk. In WWII, American soldiers stationed in the Pacific theater wrote home with tales about
entire atolls being covered in the armor-plated giants. These crabs can crack a coconut in one
swipe; but they’re generally too slow to be very dangerous to humans. Children pass lazy
afternoons by picking the crabs off tree trunks and watching them crash to the ground; it’s
reportedly great fun. And kind of messed up. 20 (More) Strange and Exotic Endangered Species (via

//div br /The Audi A5 and its V8-powered S5 sibling are considered by many to be the most beautiful
Audis ever created. For some time now it's been common knowledge that an open top variant of Audi's
latest coupe was coming. We'll still have to wait until the a
href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/"Geneva Motor Show/a in March to see the
A5 and S5 Cabriolets in the metal, but we now have details and photos of the pair. Fortunately,
unlike so many other automakers, Audi has chosen to stick with a more traditional fabric top rather
than an articulated metal contraption. The soft top is lighter than metal hard tops and Audi also
keeps the bulk further under control with aluminum fenders. With the top folded, the trunk still
has 11.3 cu-ft of usable space; try that with a retractable hard top. Europeans will get the usual
array of gas and diesel engines in the drop top A5, but here in the U.S. we'll only be getting the
2.0L TFSI four-cylinder engine or the 3.2L FSI V6 that powers the A5 Coupe. The S5 is a different
story. While the S5 coupe has a 4.2L V8 that it keeps until the end of the 2010 model year, the
Cabriolet will immediately get the new supercharged 3.0L TFSI V6 that recently debuted in the new
S4. The 333-hp V6 can be had with either the 6-speed manual or 7-speed S-Tronic dual clutch
gearbox. The A5 and S5 Cabriolet go on sale here next fall, which is ironically just about when the
open-air motoring season ends in many parts of the U.S.br /br /div

was put in a serious system, but back then it wasn’t about fidelity, it was about how many
woofers you could fit in the trunk. Yeah I was one of those kids... I know my way around car audio
quite well, but I have been out of it for so long I’m not to hip to the new technologies. The
other day I decided to fill the hole where my last head unit was previously jacked. Apparently
someone wanted it more than I did, but it gave me an excuse for a new toy. /pdiv class="feedflare"

iNeuron, Vol. 37, No. 6. (27 March 2003), pp. 989-999./ibr /br /The pyramidal neuron is the
principal cell type in the mammalian forebrain, but its function remains poorly understood. Using a
detailed compartmental model of a hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cell, we recorded responses to complex
stimuli consisting of dozens of high-frequency activated synapses distributed throughout the apical
dendrites. We found the cell's firing rate could be predicted by a simple formula that maps the
physical components of the cell onto those of an abstract two-layer "neural network." In the first
layer, synaptic inputs drive independent sigmoidal subunits corresponding to the cell's several
dozen long, thin terminal dendrites. The subunit outputs are then summed within the main trunk and
cell body prior to final thresholding. We conclude that insofar as the neural code is mediated by
average firing rate, a two-layer neural network may provide a useful abstraction for the computing
function of the individual pyramidal neuron.br /iP Poirazi, T Brannon, BW Mel/i
