We regret to inform you there will be fewer (well, fewer than usual) creepy crawlies under the tree
this holiday season as IGN reports that
THQ's Wii-exclusive Deadly Creatures has scurried underground until February 2009.
The delay marks the second of the eight-legged action title, which was originally scheduled to ship
in October and then again in mid-December, though like a radioactive cockroach it simply refuses to
die. Hopefully the extra time will give the developers a chance to improve on what we played
earlier this
year. Until then, we'll be replacing the game on our Christmas lists with some much needed bug
spray.
Wii's
Deadly Creatures delayed until February 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 23:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

width="1" height="1" //divpAn ant species that forms huge supercolonies and infests gardens and
parks is marching rapidly across Europe and will soon invade the UK, according to entomologists who
are monitoring its spread./ppThe colonies can swell to 10 or 100 times the size of those of common
garden ants and scientists warn that they can cause significant damage to plants. /pp"When I saw
this ant for the first time, I simply could not believe there could be so many garden ants in the
same lawn," says Prof Jacobus Boomsma at the University of Copenhagen, one of its co-discoverers
almost 20 years ago./pp"We reckon it's only a matter of time before [it invades the UK]."/ppThe
invasive garden ant or ema
href="http://www.antweb.org/description.do?name=neglectusgenus=lasiusrank=speciesproject=macaronesiaants"Lasius
neglectus/a/em was first identified in 1990 when it was found infesting an entire neighbourhood in
Budapest, Hungary./pp"This ant basically looks like the garden ant that everybody knows, so you
don't really become suspicious if you see a few of those crawling around because they are
everywhere," he said. It has since become a major pest in central Europe and has spread as far as
Jena in Germany, Ghent in Belgium and Warsaw in Poland./ppBoomsma and his team think it is moved
around by the horticultural trade because it hides inside plant pots. "That is the most reasonable
hypothesis for how these ants get transported because the ants themselves have lost the ability to
fly so they are very poor disbursers," he said./ppIn research published today in the journal PLoS
One, the team used genetic techniques to work out where the ants originated and what makes them so
successful at taking over new regions. One reason is that they are able to form super-colonies.
/ppThe ants occupy many interconnected nests with many queens. Because they are related, the ants
in these nests do not show territorial aggression. When they reach new locations the parasites that
usually keep the ants in check are no longer there, so they are able to expand their colonies
rapidly./pp"We found that invasive garden ants developed from species in the Black Sea region that
have natural populations with small networks of interconnected nests with many queens that mate
underground and don't fly. /pp"It is now becoming clear that rather many ant species share this
lifestyle, so it is no surprise that a number of them have become invasive pests with giant
super-colonies based on the same principles," said Dr Sylvia Cremer, at the University of
Regensburg./ppDr Jes Pedersen, a co-author at the University of Copenhagen, said: "The future will
therefore see many more ants become invasive, so it is about time we understand their biology. This
study is a major step in that direction."/ppMuch of the damage that the invasive garden ant causes
is connected with the herds of aphids that it tends. The ants have a symbiotic relationship with
the aphids in which the aphids provide sugary food while the ants provide protection from
predators. /ppWith the ants around, aphid populations expand to large numbers causing damage to
plants and releasing sticky secretions that create a mess on parked cars. Because the ant colonies
are so large they can cause a nuisance by invading homes and spoiling food./ppInvasive ants have
caused much more significant damage in other countries. The imported red fire ant, which has a
nasty sting, causes $750m (£500m) of damage in the US each year to crops and livestock. The
Argentine ant has spread along 6,000km of coastline in southern Europe, exterminating many local
insects./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

width="1" height="1" //divpThe family of Jean Charles de Menezes walked out of his inquest
yesterday as the coroner ruled the jury was forbidden from considering whether he was unlawfully
killed./ppSir Michael Wright said he did not believe the testimony justified him allowing them to
return a verdict which was tantamount to accusing police officers of murder or manslaughter./ppAs
the De Menezes family and their supporters walked out the coroner said he knew the jury's hearts
would go out to the dead man's mother, Maria Otone de Menezes. "But these are emotional reactions,
ladies and gentlemen, and you are charged with returning a verdict based on evidence," he
said./pp"Put aside any emotion - put them to one side."/ppOver the 10 weeks of the hearing jurors
have heard from 100 witnesses, including the two specialist firearms officers, C12 and C2, who shot
dead the Brazilian at point-blank range on a carriage at Stockwell station in London on July 22
2005./ppFor the first time, the public was given a full account of the incident from key witnesses
on board the underground carriage where the shooting took place./ppPolice mistakenly believed he
was Hussain Osman, one of a group of would-be suicide bombers who had attempted to set off bombs on
a number of tube trains and a bus the previous day. De Menezes was living in a block of flats
connected to one of the July 21 bombers./ppThe coroner is likely to send the jury out today with
the instruction to consider a verdict of lawful killing or an open verdict. They have also been
asked to answer a series of questions: yes, no or don't know./ppIn his legal ruling to the jury
before he sent them out to deliberate, Wright said they could not find the firearms officers who
fired the fatal shots or senior officers coordinating the operation liable under criminal or civil
law for the death because inquest law prohibited any jury returning a verdict that would lay the
blame at the door of an individual or individuals./ppHe told the court he had listened to
submissions from the legal teams for all the parties before making his decision. "After hearing the
submissions the conclusion that I have come to is that the evidence in this case taken at its
highest would not justify my leaving verdicts of unlawful killing to you," he said./pp"This is so
in respect of C12 and C2 concerning their direct involvement in shooting Mr De Menezes and also in
respect of any of the particular senior officers in relation to their management and conduct of the
operation."/ppWright said the decision did not indicate police did nothing wrong on July 22 2005,
but he said all interested persons agreed that a verdict of unlawful killing could only be
considered if jurors could be sure a very serious crime, such as murder or manslaughter, had been
committed to a criminal standard of proof, ie beyond all reasonable doubt./ppEven if the jury
concluded that a number of people made different mistakes which together resulted in the shooting
of De Menezes, unlawful killing should also not be considered./ppExplaining his decision he said:
"The accusation that is made against C2 and C12 on behalf of the family is an allegation of murder.
That is to say the deliberate killing of another human being without any lawful excuse; that is the
allegation of murder./pp"The response of the two officers to that accusation is that they were
acting in lawful defence of themselves and of many other people in that they fired their weapons in
order to prevent detonation of body-borne, improvised explosive devices."/ppHe said that given the
evidence did not amount to proving a verdict of unlawful killing, the jury must consider lawful
killing first and then an open verdict. They should find that De Menezes was lawfully killed if
they believed it was probable he died by "deliberate application of force against him" and that the
person causing the injuries used reasonable force in self-defence or defence of another person, or
to prevent a crime, or to assist in lawful arrest, even if the result of the action was
fatal./ppThe coroner added the jury may consider whether some witnesses were lying. As an example,
he said they may consider the testimony of C12, who said he shouted a warning of "armed police" to
De Menezes, which was contradicted by all the civilian witnesses./ppBut he urged caution on judging
anything they viewed as lying too harshly. "You must decide whether the person has lied or made an
honest mistake. If you can prove that the witness has lied you should bear ... in mind people tell
lies for a variety of reasons, not necessarily to put their own part./pp"In the context of this
case it might be to mitigate the impact of ... a tragic mistake or to support others in
explanations they may have put forward."/ppHe added that if they found C12 had been lying, it would
not automatically follow that C12 could not still have been acting in lawful defence of himself or
others./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

not be permitted to consider returning a verdict of unlawful killing, the coroner conducting the
hearing said today./ppThe coroner, former high court judge Sir Michael Wright, began summing up
seven weeks of evidence by telling jurors they will only be allowed to return a verdict of lawful
killing or an open verdict./ppHaving considered all the evidence, a verdict of unlawful killing
could not be supported, he said./ppAfter consideration, he told the 11-strong jury, "I so direct
you that the evidence in this case, taken at its highest, would not justify my leaving verdicts of
unlawful killing to you"./ppDe Menezes, a 27-year-old Brazilian electrician, was shot dead by armed
police at Stockwell underground station in south London on the morning of July 22 2005./ppPolice

jurors would be able to consider questions including whether C12 lied when he said police had
shouted warnings to De Menezes before opening fire, Wright said./ppHowever, he added, even if the
jury found the officers had lied they would not be able to blame them for the death, he explained,
saying: "Many people tell lies for a variety of reasons ... [including] to mitigate the impact of

"armed police" before shooting. One said the Brazilian moved towards him with apparent aggressive

they heard no warnings and that De Menezes gave no significant reaction to the police officers'
arrival./ppThe coroner told the jury, sitting at Oval cricket ground, near Stockwell station, that

"your heart will go out to her"./ppHe added: "But these are emotional reactions, ladies and

Today at Nokia World 2008, Nokia has released (via Beta Labs) the latest version of Nokia Maps,
v3.0, as well as a full personalized 'online mapping experience' on Ovi (also now available). The
combination of Nokia Maps 3.0 plus Ovi is claimed to be "the first free service that allows people
to pre-plan a journey at home and synchronize with their phone, giving access to pre-planned routes
and favourite destinations while on the move." Nokia Maps has also been updated to include higher
resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for 216 cities across the world and terrain maps.
Screenshots, info, download link (for selected devices) and notes below.
Taking a very Web 2.0 standpoint, Nokia say that "Maps on Ovi
is becoming more than just a mapping tool. Over the coming months, Maps will become a destination
for people to save and organize places, pre-plan trips and post-edit them. People can share their
location and all their personally and socially meaningful content with friends, inviting them to
join in activities and share experiences."
Other new options for Nokia Maps 3.0 include:
- a route overview screen in navigation mode.
- instant access to real time information such as camera alerts, safety spots and traffic
information for selected countries.
- Wcities event guides that give real-time information for events and movies in over 450
destinations.
- better pedestrian navigation, adding straight-line guidance, which allows you to walk the
shortest distance between point A and point B even if there isn't a proper (routing) road system
available. Pedestrian routes now take in footpaths and parks.
- in pedestrian mode, beeps and vibrations alert you when you need to make a turn along your
route.
- the level of detail in the maps has increased to the point that you can, for example, view
multiple entrances to the same underground metro station.
The higher map quality is apparently a direct result of the relationship that now exists
between Nokia and the bought-in NAVTEQ.
Downloading
Nokia Maps 3.0 (for all S60 3rd Edition FP2 devices except the N96) is now available on the
Nokia Beta Labs web site. A
version for the N96 and other S60 3rd Edition phones will be available shortly. The online
(planning) version is now accessible from http://maps.ovi.com, though with some browser compatibility issues (it runs as a
plug-in). Both versions are released as a Beta, so the usual precautions apply.
Of special note is that Maps 3.0 isn't directly compatible with previous versions, in that new maps
and a new PC installer are needed. As a result (and presumably to avoid confusion), Maps 3.0 is
only available via this new 'Nokia Maps Updater', which manages the process.
Existing navigation licenses are preserved, by the way.
Ewan's tried to install Maps 3.0 on the AAS N85 (the only non-N96 FP2 he and I have to hand), but
failed, Maps Updater seems to be a little flaky at this stage.... If you've tried it, your comments
most welcome!

Ewan's trying this as
I speak - more later!
Existing navigation licenses are preserved, by the way.
We'll have more on the new Nokia Maps soon... and, once you've tried it, your comments most
welcome!

Yesterday marked the 20th World AIDS Day, and although the event was marked on a small scale in
the Armenian capital, it was nevertheless observed in a country where such subjects as sexual
health and alternative sub-cultures are usually considered somewhat taboo. Pink Armenia
posted the schedule
for the day which also included a concert by three local underground punk bands.
December 1st, at 4pm we will gather near the Vardan Mamikonyan statue and start our march till
Republic Square, and after all will go to Pushkin street, Avangard folk-club (Pushkin 3a) to
start the main event at 5pm, which includes punk underground rock concert, presentations, films
and live shows. During the event we'll distribute different information materials on HIV issues
and condoms.
Perhaps the most popular ground-breaking Armenian LGBT blog,
Unzipped: Gay Armenia summed up the
day as well as posting a retrospective on the year since the last World AIDS Day as it
pertained to
HIV/AIDS in Armenia.
Meanwhile, Armenia: Higher Education & Sciences provides a background to the
extent of known HIV infection in the country and comments on a media report casting doubts
over a drug developed locally to combat the symptoms of the disease.
The first HIV infection in Armenia was reported in 1988. Since then 150 people have perished
according to Armenia’s AIDS Prevention Centre; 128 of them were men and 22 were women.
According to the same report, 649 people are currently HIV+. UNAIDS, however, puts the total
number at 2,400, of which 610 are women. There are no estimates of the number of Armenian
AIDS/HIV+s who have left the country in search of easier, cheaper and more confidential access to
treatment.
[…]
The two most common transmission causes are unprotected/high risk heterosexual intercourse (49
percent) and sharing infected needles by intravenous drug users (44 percent). Other causes such
as unsafe homosexual intercourse and mother-to-child (perinatal) transmission constitute the
remaining 7 percent.
According to the data, almost all infected intravenous drug users are men including a good number
of migrant workers who might have been infected in Russia or in Ukraine. All Female HIV+s (98.7
percent) have been infected through unprotected sexual contact.
[…]
2008 is also the 10th anniversary of Armenicum, the so-called wonder drug. For years people have
been told about the wonders of this Armenian formula with curative powers over the HIV virus.
[…]
The article says that what most Armenians probably do not know is that their tax money is paying
for Armenicum, which is more than triple the cost of the world’s only proven treatment for
HIV, antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. They probably also are not aware that in a few months Armenicum
may be the only choice available in Armenia for future HIV-infected patients. ... instead of
paying for all accepted treatments for HIV patients, the government is ... requiring that AIDS
Center doctors offer the drug, while unproven, as a choice.
