No doubt this weekend will yank tons of girls (and some boys) away from their Facebook pages and
into the sometimes comfortable surroundings of a darkened movie theater for a screening (or three)
of the new film Twilight. And
because you parents out there would love to make this weekend a special one for your
Twilight-obsessed children, Cinematical is here with some help (babysitting is
extra -- talk to Weinberg and Snider after this post). Cinematical reader Nicole sent us a
note and a link to her tasty-looking Vampire Cookies recipe, which, according to her, started off
as something to make for Halloween and then were a huge hit for a Twilight-themed party
she threw this week. (Okay, I just stopped typing in order to throw that picture into the post and
now I can't stop staring at it. Damn those look pretty tasty.)
Yeah, so those are the cookies above, and I especially like how they have two tiny holes in each,
with red jam (it's just jam!) leaking out. Very cool. Head on over to Nicole's site, Baking Bites, for the recipe and additional
photos, and let us know how they come out.
Look, I know the drill. If any element of the Twilight movie varies even
slightly from the way you pictured it in your head, then it is the worst film ever made and you
hate it and Catherine Hardwicke has ruined your
childhood. Or, alternatively, you've built up so much anticipation for the movie that you're going
to love love LOVE it no matter what, even if it's bad, you don't care, you refuse to listen to any
criticisms LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU. I know how it goes.
The book's most devoted fans are seeing the film anyway, so I guess I'm talking to everyone else --
those who haven't read the book, or who (like me) read it, mostly enjoyed it, then didn't give it
another thought. Is the Twilight movie of any use to those people? Or, as a friend asked
me, does it work purely as a vampire movie?
Oh, heavens, no. Noooooo. This is not a vampire movie. This is a somber teen romance that happens
to have some vampires in it. Little attempt is made to establish the mythology of the bloodsuckers,
and the supernatural elements are downplayed -- a wise move, since the special effects, when they
are necessary, are at about the level you'd expect from a movie that is more focused on romance
than sci-fi action.
All of which is in keeping with the tone of Stephenie Meyer's book, which is eight parts romance
and two parts action/fantasy. That's why it's been such a phenomenal success with women, and why
the male-dominated geek industry -- the Nerderati, if you will -- has been so skeptical of that
success. "What?" they scoff. "A super-popular vampire book that we, as men, AREN'T interested in?
Inconceivable! It must be terrible, and its popularity is probably being over-reported!"

Earlier we brought you my review of
Catherine Hardwicke's Twilight, beyond the break you can check
out David Harley's thoughts on the film, which is about a high school girl named Bella falls in
love with a vampire. The new couple leads a rival vampire clan to pursue them and attempt to force
her to decide if she, too, wishes to become one of the undead. The film opens in theaters tonight
at midnight and is expected to take in close to $70m this weekend. Don't forget to
write your own
review and tell other B-D readers what you thought!
This evening we've added our official review for Summit Entertainment's Twilight, the hotly anticipated
adaptation to Stephenie Meyer's teen vampire drama. "This entire adaptation was carried through
by my wonderful Catherine Hardwicke, who took a shiny little turd and transformed it into a
watchable, slightly enjoyable film." You can read the full review, with minor spoilers, by
clicking the title above. Don't forget to write your own review and
tell other B-D readers what you thought! The film is about a high school girl named Bella falls in
love with a vampire. The new couple leads a rival vampire clan to pursue them and attempt to force
her to decide if she, too, wishes to become one of the undead.
Last week B-D stringer Tammy Sutton caught up with Twilight (review) director Catherine Hardwicke, who reveals
plans for the DVD and Blu-ray release early next year. All the details can be found beyond the
break. The film is about a high school girl named Bella falls in love with a vampire. The new
couple leads a rival vampire clan to pursue them and attempt to force her to decide if she, too,
wishes to become one of the undead.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is in several instances thematically tied to the NES title
Castlevania II: Simon’s Curse Quest, though the connections are oblique enough to lend the
Nintendo DS title its own novel quality. In Japanese, the two games carry the subtitles of
”The Accursed Seal” and ”The Stolen
Seal,” referring in both cases to the means by which to temporarily
banish Dracula. What perhaps most closely links the two titles is the emphasis on action happening
outside the castle, exploring the Transylvanian countryside and encountering its morally dubious
country folk.
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest departed from its predecessor by including role-playing game
elements such as collecting clues from townspeople and purchasing items from merchants. The
developers lent an element of the series’ darkness to these familiar conventions by making
all of the townspeople deliberate liars, misleading Simon in his quest to lift his curse.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia features townspeople who, while not outright liars, are somewhat
questionable, from the smarmy merchant to the complacent apothecary. While genial on the surface,
the Wygol villagers you rescue during the course of vanquishing evil from the land seem ever so
slightly tainted by the sinister atmosphere of their surroundings.
Both the activity of rescuing the abducted villagers and the flawed character of the Wygolians
themselves produce interesting consequences for a Castlevania with a female protagonist. Koji
Igarashi mentioned back at E3 that the main character’s sadness, a consequence of being
robbed of her memory early in the story, is a central thematic element. In saving so many lives and
restoring the domestic scene of Wygol, Shanoa can be seen as something of a nurturer, specifically
in contrast to the inhuman aloofness of Alucard in Symphony of the Night. However, both her mental
ailment and the unsympathetic portrayal of those she saves works against this characterization.
In terms of the story itself, Order of Ecclesia begins on the periphery of the familiar family
drama that links many of the stories in the series. Rather than centering on sons of Simon or
Dracula, the Belmont clan has lost favor in its eternal struggles against the Count. This is
somewhere in the 19th century, when institutions begin arising for the purpose of replacing the
vampire killing bloodline. The only order to produce results in this mission is Ecclesia. Led by
Barlowe, research into glyphs proves the only effective measure outside the Belmont family’s
magical whips in battling demons.
However, choosing Shanoa as the recipient of the order’s glyphs causes a split in the
factions of Ecclesia. Resentful, head-clutching Albus—a peer of the
female protagonist—believes himself worthy of the position of the
bearer of Dominus, the force determined to vanquish Dracula. He interrupts the initiation ritual
during which Shanoa internalizes the power of the glyphs, thereby undermining her potential as a
vampire killer and traumatizing her memory. She proceeds through the game knowing that she must
defeat Albus only because she has been instructed by Barlowe. Her direct experience of the violence
he has caused her is obscured by the act itself.
Shanoa employs the training she received at Ecclesia whenever she encounters one of the glyphs
found within the various stages of the game. Holding the up button, Shanoa pulls her hair back,
revealing the markings on her shoulders and back, which absorb the power of the glyph. Rapier,
lance and crossbow glyphs can be equipped to the X and Y buttons, allowing the player to alternate
between these attacks. After completing the Minera prison stage, you are also given the option of
alternating quickly between three sets of glyphs by pressing A and hitting the shoulder buttons.
Upgrading weapons along the way lends an array of strategic depth to the title on the order of an
RPG—a direction for the series that dates back not only to Symphony of
the Night, but as far back as Simon’s Quest.
Beyond the break you can watch the English subtitled trailer for SODIUM BABIES, a stylish new
vampire film from directors Benoit & Julien Decaillon. The pic tells the story of Maurice, who
in 1973 is very happy to be getting out of the Army and back to his lady. Hes not able to rest for
long, however, as Max, an evil ghoul, forces him to enlist in The Fellowship. Maurice is then
sucked into 30 years of servitude, just waiting for his chance to get back at those who wronged
him.
It's beginning to look a lot like Twilight ...
everywhere you go. Remember the other day when I told you about that so-called review embargo on
Twilight? Yeah, well ... nice try. Seems most of the major outlets (mainly newspapers)
have published reviews, and they're quite positive, with Entertainment Weekly giving the film a B and Roger
Ebert giving it 2.5 out of 4 stars (I imagine that's a sideways thumb?). Cinematical
will publish our first review (out of two) later on tonight, but in the meantime here's a whole
bunch of Twilight stuff to keep you busy:
2000 shows are already sold out this weekend for Twilight, and folks are currently
projecting an opening of $45-65 million. Did Summit Entertainment step in sh*t, or what? Here's
an
entertaining article from the LA Times' Patrick Goldstein on "How the big studios
missed the boat on Twilight."
Despite what appears to be positive feedback, Twilight is only running at 39% over at Rotten Tomatoes, though it's still
early. Here's a quote from Variety's negative review: "A
disappointingly anemic tale of forbidden love that should satiate the pre-converted but will
bewilder and underwhelm viewers who haven't devoured Stephenie Meyer's bestselling juvie
chick-lit franchise."
And finally, check out an interview with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart from this
morning's Today Show below.
Those of you who caught last night's South
Park episode would have noticed a pretty familiar and topical theme: vampires. We're not
sure whether the boys intentionally made sure this episode aired the week Twilight was to arrive in theaters
or if they just got lucky, but it was all pretty funny nonetheless. And while they didn't reference
Twilight (the one thing the episode was missing), they did take a few jabs at Hot Topic
and the difference between goth kids and vampire kids. In the episode, the character Butters
mistakes some vampire-themed kids at school for real vampires, and when his friends and parents all
reject him, he turns to this new group for acceptance. Check out the scene below which shows
Butters' transformation into a vampire, and you can catch the rest of the episode over at South Park Studios.

The Woodies happened, I was
there, you didn't miss too much. This year's performance roster was interesting though,
particularly for a couple of onstage collaborations. Vampire Weekend's "The Kids Don't Stand A
Chance" with Chromeo was previously announced and a fun if subtle shift from the original (not
like the Chromeo studio
remix of the track, which is a fun if unsubtle shift from the original). Lykke Li (with
Björn Yttling on bass) covering Tribe's "Can I Kick It" alongside surprise guest Q-Tip was
unexpected and momentarily electrifying. Tip has the power. That bled into a three-song medley of
Kamaal solo stuff, which you can watch here along with the Chromeo Weekend, Santogold, and the
Cool Kids' performances. That screengrab captures the slow dissolve from Q-Tip and Lykke kicking
it to Rostam Weekend loving it which I included because that is highly bloggable imagery.
