The Layover features six all new tracks from Evidence, as well a DVD featuring the first full video collaboration between Jason Goldwatch and Evidence focusing on the theme of The Layover. The long-standing relationship between the two have created some of Hip Hop’s most classic videos, including videos for Evidence’s ‘Mr. Slow Flow’, and for Dilated Peoples’ ‘Back Again’, ‘Worst Come To Worst’ and ‘Work The Angles’. One third of the influential LA Hip-Hop group Dilated Peoples. Evidence masterfully launched his solo career last year with his debut solo album, The Weatherman.

Michael Perretta, better known as Evidence, is an American hiphop artist, producer, and member of the rap group Dilated Peoples. Evidence is a native of Venice in Los Angeles, California and was born to a Italian father and a Russian-American mother. Before becoming a rapper and producer, Evidence was a graffiti artist.

Já por aqui falei várias vezes sobre a Magnatune, uma editora online de música independente que apenas integra música de artistas que utilizam licenças Creative Commons. Com efeito, a etiqueta acredita que a melhor forma de promoção do trabalho dos artistas passa por incentivar os utilizadores a partilharem as músicas com os seus amigos e conhecidos.

Mas ao contrário de outras netlabels que não têm qualquer modelo de negócio por detrás, a Magnatune vende não só CDs e downloads sem DRM nos mais variados formatos (MP3 VBR, OggVorbis, AAC, FLAC e até mesmo WAV - equivalente ao som de um CD). No entanto, a companhia fundada pelo empreendedor John Buckman tem o cuidado de conceder condições equitativas aos seus artistas já que 50 por cento do dinheiro proveniente das vendas vai direitinho para o bolso dos artistas.

Em Maio passado, escrevi aqui sobre um novo plano de subscrição que a Magnatune tinha acabado de lançar e que permitia descarregar todo o catálogo da editora por apenas 18 dólares mensais (14 euros) ou fazer o streaming de um número ilimitado de faixas por nove dólares (7,20 euros) sem termos que ouvir as mensagens promocionais intercalares que quem ouve os temas a partir do site da editora tem que apanhar.

Entretanto, no final de Setembro Buckman anunciou no seu blog que decidira implementar um novo tipo de plano de subscrição do tipo “pague o que quiser” mas com um montante mínimo de apenas 10 dólares no caso dos downloads e cinco dólares no caso do streaming e um período de fidelidade de pelo menos três meses. Ontem, o patrão da Magnatune decidiu reduzir esse período para um mês. Desta forma, os fãs de música já não ficam “agarrados” durante três meses ao pagamento da mensalidade.

Outra novidade anunciada por Buckman é que a partir de agora também é possível pagar via PayPal em lugar do cartão de crédito, o que facilita a renovação automática da subscrição. Segundo ele, actualmente as subscrições já representam o dobro das receitas diárias resultantes das vendas de downloads individuais. O grande obstáculo para projectos de música online que se dedicam a disponibilizar música de apenas artistas sem contrato com as editoras discográficas tradicionais continua a ser, no entanto, em como fazer com que os utilizadores tenham acesso fácil e imediato aos artistas que mais lhe interessam.

Aqui entra inevitavelmente o papel das tecnologias de recomendação de música disponíveis em sites como o Last.fm que ajudam os fãs a encontrarem artistas que lhe dizem algo a partir de nomes que eles já conhecem. Ora, este tipo de funcionalidades está lamentavelmente ausentes do site da Magnatune. Outro ponto bastante importante que também não figura no site são conteúdos editoriais como blogs e críticas de música que destaquem alguns dos artistas que a equipa da editora considere serem mais dignos de menção. Sem isto, um site de música online mais parece um armazém de artigos indiferenciados.
