We've seen plenty of organizations a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20081119/0404062885.shtml"react poorly/a and sue when
someone creates a parody of what they do. Parody is protected under fair use rules, but that
doesn't always stop lawsuits. And, some were apparently wondering if iCooking Mama/i, a popular a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooking_Mama"video game/a for Nintendo platforms would get
offended and sue over a critical video from PETA. Cooking Mama is apparently a game where you
simulate preparing a meal. The PETA version used artwork from the original game and created
iCooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals/i, with the rather overt position. Some had thought that the
company behind the game, Majesco, might sue. But, Jeff Leyser points out, the company took the high
road, a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87569-Cooking-Mama-Responds-To-PETA"
target="_new"responding to the parody game/a and essentially said "thanks for the free publicity,"
while noting that the game has options for vegetarian meals. blockquotei "Food lover and culinary
cutie Cooking Mama is a virtual chef who believes that good home cooked food, properly prepared
from the best ingredients, can bring people together around the table and make the world a happier
place. That's why Mama is taking a stand with oven mitts raised high against the latest PETA
objection targeting her freshly released videogame, Cooking Mama World Kitchen, that shipped this
week for Wii from Majesco Entertainment Company. Mama wants people to know that World Kitchen
includes 51 recipes from around the world, ranging from vegetarian fare like miso soup and rice
cakes to international delicacies like ginger pork and octopus dumplings." /i/blockquote See? It's
not that difficult to respond without resorting to a lawsuit.br /br /a

align="right" border="0"/aIn response to Mama's statement yesterday, Joel Bartlett, assistant
director of marketing for a href="http://wii.qj.net/tags/peta/7782" id="tag" title="People for the

with Cooking Mama: Vegetarian Kitchen. Even though they made a playable parody of Mama as a
bloodthirsty butcher, PETA maintains that they still love Mama.brbrIn the letter, Bartlett was glad
to report that thanks to the bloody span style="font-style: italic;"Cooking span style="font-style:

you into a demonic, knife-wielding maniac in Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals, we still love you.
While we had a good time roasting you, the real purpose of our game, of course, was to bring to
light some of the horrific practices of the turkey industry. And we mean the animals who are
actually mistreated not the virtual ones you cook up in your digital kitchen./pbrBartlett then
points out that Mama could still have her wide variety of dishes with Indian, Thai, Japanese, and
Middle Eastern cuisines, which have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options.brbrAfter all that
in-game butchering, PETA just wants to play span style="font-style: italic;"Cooking Mama/span span

can't, so they're asking Majesco to cook up a vegetarian kitchen for them. They'll even help

Majesco kept it classy in its response to PETA's Cooking Mama
parody. Taking the whole situation in stride, the publisher quoted the fictional Mama as
saying, "I would never put rat in my Ratatouille. Like any accomplished cook, I create my recipes
to appeal to a broad range of tastes and preferences. My only goal is to ensure you leave the table
well fed."
Majesco went on to note that the company's latest entry in the franchise, Cooking Mama World
Kitchen, features over 25 vegetarian-friendly recipes. It also states that Mama is not a
vegetarian, but "fully supports" the humane treatment of animals, as her doggie
"protégé" Max will make his debut in the latest game -- hopefully, not as an
entrée. Kudos to Majesco for incorporating some flair into what would otherwise have been
another boring press release about a game launch. And thanks to PETA for making the whole laugh possible.
