LV All-in-One PC/a is the followup to the beautiful (and powerful) Vaio LT that came out earlier
this year. This time around, they gave the LV an improved mounting base, slimmer bezel, integrated
TV tuner and most importantly, HDMI-in. Has the LV one-upped the LT?br script
type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8" galleryPost('sonyvaiolvreview', 3, ''); /script/p pstrongThe
Price:/strong $2800 (as tested)/p pstrongThe Verdict:/strong The LV took everything the LT did
well, and added more things to make it even better, without sacrificing much. In terms of the
exterior improvements, the overall size of the computer is cut down due to the omission of the see
through bezel in the LT. And instead of just a spring loaded foot for the computer to rest on like
before, the LV now sits on an articulating arm, which is attachted to a base. This makes adjusting
the angle of the LV easier than before. And for those who plan to use this away from the desk, the
wireless keyboard now has a built-in trackpad, which makes couch surfing all the easier./p pBut the
real new appeal here is the addition of an HDMI-in port, which allows your screen to work with the
latest home theater and gaming consoles, independently of the PC. And it pretty much works as
advertised. You plug in your HDMI product, switch the input source over from the computer, and
voilamdash;your Vaio LV is functioning as a TV. I tested a Roku Netflix Box and Xbox 360 with the
LV, and both worked without a problem. The picture looked really sharp, and there was no visible
artifacting caused by the display. It should be noted that the HDMI does not work with windows at
all, so importing HD content from HDMI products is not a possibility./p pAs a computer, the Vaio LV
performs well, with a few slight spec bumps over the LT. But it's quick, responsive, and is able to
take on a decent workload. We even tested Tivo PC on the LV, and it functioned without so much as a
hiccup on the hardware side. But there's nothing radically different about the Vista experience
this time around, so if you're still curious, check out the LT review./p pAll in all, The LV really
is an improved semi-upgrade from the Vaio LT. It's not different enough that recent LT owners
should be cursing the stars, but those deciding between the LV and the still available LT should go
with the LV. [a href="http://gizmodo.com/tag/vaio-lv"Sony Vaio LV on Giz/a]/p br style="clear:

Cheers !

pThe BBC has been blocked from beginning a £68 million ($101 million), four-year program to
add video bulletins to its 65 local UK websites - a proposal that had been vigorously contested by
concerned commercial publishers. After a five-month inquiry, the BBC Trust regulator said on Friday
the plan bwould hurt the nascent online video efforts of struggling local newspaper publishers/b,
many of which were forced to answer falling profits and the classified ads downturn with layoffs
this week. /p p The BBC wanted to add just three daily news, three sport and three weather videos
to each of its region-specific sites, while the project would also have added UGC, mobile video and
up to 10 live streams per year from local events. It would have cost £23 million ($34
million) per year between 2009/10 and 2013/14, or an average £350,000 ($520,000) per site,
and planned to attract 11 percent of UK households. /p p But the proposal was met with fierce
lobbying, most notably by the UK's largest newspaper group Trinity Mirror (a
href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=TNI" class="ticker"
title="TNI"LSE: TNI/a) and the Newspaper Society industry umbrella, which argued against public
funding for services they said they had already invested in. The BBC Trust agreed, saying the plan
bwould have cost commercial media four percent of revenue/b and, more seriously, would haveimpacted
their future ability to innovate online. Regardless of competition, the trust even said the
proposal would not have built local audiences as the BBC claimed. The BBC said it will consider its
options. a

Concept/a.) But it was coincidentally the same day JJ Abrams was showing off some scenes from the
new a href="http://gizmodo.com/tag/star-trek"Trek movie/a, so I stopped by. This is funny: When
they asked me if I had any recording gear in my bag, I had a heart attack. Most people had a mere
cellphone, but I had my full journo-blogger-battle messenger and so I ended up checking like 4
pieces of AV gear and a laptop. So embarrassing./p pInside, I don't usually get star struck, but
how can a geek not get excited seeing both Harold from Harold and Kumar and Sylar in the same
theater sitting in the same row watching themselves on the screen. And it was Trek! Not the old
Trek, and Not even Next Generation, but a new kind of Trek with the origins of the old characters
and how they met up. Shields up, spoilers ahead./p pThey first showed the new trailer, previewed in
theaters playing Bond, which you can see here.br object width="425" height="344"param name="movie"

through the scene were we see a trouble Kirk getting into a bar fight with cadets until a man
stationed on his father's ship realizes who he is, stops the fight and asks him if he wants to do
something better with his life. Kirk takes him up and joins. The next scene involves Kirk working
with Bones to smuggle him aboard the Enterprise and he saves them from walking into a trap. The
next scene involves a fight scene with John Cho (HAROLD and Sulu) and Chris Pine (Kirk) vs some
filthy Romulans, skydiving (yes, skydiving) and a saber fight. And the final scene involves Spock
and Kirk meeting Scotty./p pThe Trek Dorks are currently a bit polarized, a few upset over
rewriting canon and a few worried about the stylistic updates. But I really like the New Trek, and
I think it could break out of the category of Films Only for Nerds. You've got more action, humor,
and heat than you did in the old ones. Even if its a bit less intellectual than previous movies at
times, if the preview was any indication, it doesn't seem to ever slow down. And most importantly,
it's impossible to not resonate with the young cast playing the classic characters as they express
the old mannerisms; Kirk runs like Kirk, Bones complains like bones, and Scotty, well Scotty is
100x more funny than the old Scotty. Come to think of it, everyone with an accent is extremely
funny, but maybe because I'm a bit racist. (In a loving way.) Someone should have done an origins
movie long ago, but within a year, we'll have a modern telling of the heroes many of us grew up
with. If you're like me, you'll probably find the story of how they all got together as cadets and
juniors as important as the actual adventure they go on. Maybe we can do an io9/Gizmodo reader
meetup movie night./p pHere are my favoritest Giz stories today:br bull; a

Guantaacute;namo Bay must be set free, in a decision with far-reaching implications for the
remaining detainees at the base in Cuba./ppDistrict court judge Richard Leon ruled in a Washington
DC court that there was no legal basis to keep the five in prison. It is the first verdict in more
than 200 habeas corpus petitions being brought before the US courts. The petitions challenge the
American government to prove that there is evidence to justify keeping the men in Guantaacute;namo
Bay. The judge, known for his conservative views, said the US government should not appeal./pp"The

prisoners. "This is a tough, no-nonsense judge. If he found there wasn't evidence to justify
holding the men, you can be sure it wasn't there."/ppPresident-elect Barack Obama has promised to

detainees. One possibility is the setting up of "security courts", but the new administration is
well aware it faces major diplomatic, political, and legal problems./ppThe latest hearing involved
six Algerian nationals, five of whom are also Bosnian citizens and who were originally accused of
plotting to blow up the US embassy in Bosnia. The men had been acquitted on these charges in Bosnia
but were seized by the US and rendered to Guantaacute;namo Bay./pp"It is an illustration of the
catastrophic policies of the Bush administration - ignoring the legitimate ruling of the court of
an ally, rendering these men away from their homes and families, and holding them without legal
recourse in Guantaacute;namo Bay for six years," said Clive Stafford Smith, director of Reprieve.
"There are plenty more cases of injustice ahead of us, including the plight of the British
residents who remain in this terrible place."/ppJudge Leon's ruling on the detainees is the first
since the US supreme court ruled in June that every prisoner in Guantaacute;namo had the right to
contest his imprisonment in the civilian courts./ppReading his ruling as the detainees listened in
Guantaacute;namo via a telephone link, Leon said the US government failed to show the five
detainees had planned to travel to Afghanistan to fight US forces./ppOrdering the release of the
five, Leon said the allegation was based on a single source, and he did not have enough information
to judge the source's reliability or credibility. He ordered the US government to take all
necessary and diplomatic steps to facilitate their release "forthwith". /ppThe judge ruled the
government did provide enough evidence that the sixth detainee, Belkacem Bensayah, had planned to
take up arms against the United States in Afghanistan./ppLawyers acting for Binyam Mohamed, a
British resident held at Guantaacute;namo Bay, are demanding his release. They want US documents -
some of which have been seen by the British government - to be disclosed, saying they will reveal
that Mohamed had been tortured./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom:

alt="lively.JPG" title="lively.JPG" width="293" height="205" /Less than five months after launch,
Google (GOOG) is a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/11/that-was-quick-google-kills-virtual-world-lively-goog-"shutting
down virtual world Lively/a. The a
href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/lively-no-more.html"reason/a it's going away: It's
useless to Google's search ad business. Which is why the company said it's dumping Lively to "focus
more on our core search, ads and apps business."/p pBut that doesn't mean that Google couldn't have
built a decent virtual world if it wanted to. If Google wasn't under the gun by a tanking economy,
and if they had real incentive to build a virtual world, here's how they could have made Lively
more successful:/p ol listrongHold up the launch of Windows- and Internet Explorer-only Lively
until it runs on Firefox and the Mac./strong A disproportionate number of the early-adopter
community uses the Mac and/or the Firefox web browser. If you throw a Hail Mary like "everyone get
avatars and move into 3D chat," you need the Firefox and Mac users on board right away. (This goes
for Google Chrome too, the company should port it to the Mac ASAP.)/li listrongScrub the virtual
world completely free of sex and violence./strong In Lively, you could use the "crush" command to
make an anvil fall out of the sky and wallop another user's avatar, or use "kick" to hit someone in
the groin. It was funny. Actually, it was so funny a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/7/google-s-lively-is-just-like-second-life-no-one-s-there-but-perverts-and-griefers-goog-"all
anyone did in Lively was try "punch" or "choke" anyone in range/a. And some of Lively's avatar
designs -- especially the anthropomorphic animals -- were creepy enough, even without random
furries always trying to beat you up or romance you./li listrongShowcase what can be done with the
technology./strong Here Google made the same mistake with Lively that Linden Lab made with Second
Life -- it put its virtual world technology out into the public domain and thought its mission
ended there. It doesn't. Google should have hosted its own Lively rooms and held events in them,
encouraging new users to try out the service. Lively rooms would have been a great tie-in with
other Google services like Orkut or Google Groups -- but Google was content to let Lively flounder
alone at lively.com./li listrongMake Lively an extension of Google's advertising platform/strong.
It would have been relatively easy for Google to program Lively to include advertisements piped in
from elsewhere on the web, so a virtual room contains a space a few hundred pixels square that
rotates through an ad in Google's inventory. The company could then split revenue with any website
that hosts and gets traffic to an ad-enabled Lively room -- just like it does with flat web pages
via AdSense. There's probably only pennies involved, especially in this ad climate. And good luck
finding advertisers who prefer avatars to real customers. But Lively could have been much more
likely to propagate if people had financial incentive to use it./li /ol pOf course, Google did none
of these things. The point: Watchers of the fledgling virtual worlds industry -- which raised a
href="http://www.virtualworldsmanagement.com/2008/q3.html"almost half a billion dollars/a in
investment just in the first three quarters of this year -- shouldn't read Google's departure from
the game as a negative verdict on the virtual worlds idea as a whole. Google didn't even really
try./p pstrongSee Also:/strongbr /a

Un organisme allemand indépendant a sillonné la Belgique. Verdict: Base
offre le meilleur réseau... d'un cheveu. La technique employée ? On appelle cela
le CSR, de l'anglais Call Success Rate. Ils ont testé cette technique à travers toute
la Wallonie, pour éprouver les réseaux de Proximus, Base et Mobistar.
