In March of 2008, the Windows Embedded Group launched the SPARK Your
Imagination program. This was the first hobbyist-focused program for the Windows Embedded
product family. Before the SPARK program, the software cost $1000 per seat and you had to go
through a distributor to get it. Not very friendly to weekend code warriors and hard to compete
with free/Linux hobbyist software.
On Oct 27th (just a few weeks back), Microsoft launched a contest to bring attention to the
SPARK program. The contest is entitled SPARKs Will
Fly. It is based on the same concept as The Imagine Cup
in that it is round-based and built around a theme; in this case the theme is “Build the
home of the future.” Microsoft will advance 50 people to Round 2 and give each of them a
VIA Pico-ITX Artigo board ($500
worth of kit) to develop their idea. Microsoft will select 3 finalist from this 50.
They’ll compete on stage at ESC Silicon Valley 2009 for the top prize. The winner takes
home $15,000. Check it out, I hope a Maker wins!

 As its
name suggests, Sloshspot is a website for
people looking to have a good time – perhaps too good of a time. Like many
sites before it, Sloshspot is an index of bars and nightspots, where users can leave reviews,
post photos, and check out other “regulars” of different locales. Venues can maintain
their own presence on the site to keep their regulars informed of events and drink specials.
What makes Sloshspot interesting, unique, and maybe a bit of an enabler, is a point system that
allows users to earn rewards for more participation on the site. Of course, more participation
– like posting photos and comments from a night out at a particular venue
– requires more time out on the town.
As you participate more on the site, you move up to different levels – from
lightweight, to weekend warrior, to socialite, etc. At each level, you unlock new site features,
like things you can add to your profile, and eventually become eligible for prizes like iTunes
gift cards and of course, free kegs.
Sloshspot also offers an iPhone app so you can find bars, events, and shows on the go. The app
automatically detects your location, then lets you search the database to find something nearby.
You can see all of the same data that’s available on the website, like ratings, the
regulars, and who’s attending on a given night.
The big competition for Sloshspot would seem to by MySpace, where many venues already maintain
their own presence where you can do much of the same, by becoming a “friend” of a
given place, checking the event schedule, or leaving comments with your reviews and photos.
Where Sloshspot has a chance to standout is with its reward system and a mobile experience
specific to those that can’t get enough of the nightlife. And if those two components can
take off, there is certainly money to be made in hyperlocal advertising to a crowd that’s
looking to spend money.

The upcoming release of Australia -- directed by
Australian Baz Luhrmann, shot in Australia and starring Australian-born actor Hugh Jackman, and
Australian-raised Nicole Kidman -- inspired me to take a look at the Australian film industry,
thinking I could easily pick out seven highlights. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for
everyone else, Australian films are a much richer and more daunting prospect. I decided to stick to
films shot in Australia by directors born there, thus eliminating things like Nicolas Roeg's
Walkabout (1971). I also eliminated New Zealanders like Jane Campion and Peter Jackson,
who deserve their own list. At the 11th hour, I had to eliminate such an obviously great film as
Babe (1995); though it qualifies under my rule, the Hoggett's farm could actually be just
about anywhere (it's more of a fairy tale world, and Australia is never mentioned). And no,
Crocodile Dundee (1986) didn't make the cutoff, but here's what did:
The Road
Warrior (1981, George Miller)
This movie represents everything that's badass about Australia. It opened there in 1981 as
Mad Max 2, mainly because everyone had seen Mad Max (1979). Here, it opened a
year later, in the summer of 1982, with the changed title, hoping that Americans could be tricked
into thinking it wasn't a sequel. It didn't matter; this film is far starker, funnier and
all-around better than the original. Rarely have the roar of engines mixed so well with the wide,
empty, sun-baked dust of the outback. Miller was -- and still is -- one of the most interesting
Down Under directors, but he works slowly and sporadically and stays out of the limelight. (In
the thirty years since Mad Max, he has directed only seven feature films.) And Mel
Gibson may have gone a little nuts lately, but we'll always love him for this.

on his young team-mates, claiming they are "not brave enough in battle" and revealing he had been
forced to step in to prevent players arguing during games. The France international also suggested
one of his more experienced colleagues, who he refused to name, had proved a disruptive influence
at the club on and off the pitch./ppThe outburst is particularly untimely with Arsenal, nine points
off the top of the Premier League having lost their fourth game of the season against Aston Villa
last Saturday, already rocked by confirmation that Theo Walcott will be absent for at least three
months after the winger underwent surgery on his right shoulder yesterday. Gallas suggested he had
grown tired of the drip-feed of criticism of his captaincy, initially sparked by his bizarre and
petulant sit-down protest at Birmingham City in February, though his words will have done little
for team harmony at the Emirates Stadium./pp"We have to understand that, to be champions, you have
to play big matches every weekend and fight," said Gallas. "We are coming up against teams who are
not scared to play football against us, who are not scared to take us on at our place and this is
becoming dangerous for Arsenal. We are not brave enough in battle. I think we need to be soldiers.
We have to be warriors. There are teams who can do it well against us and we have to be able to
face up to these attacks. That is how they [Arsenal's young players] will forge their character and
how they will get experience. Even though they've played a certain number of matches, they're still
young and still learning."/ppThe 31-year-old, whose own form has been patchy not least against
Villa, insisted he was speaking out because "there are things that can't be said and can't be
tolerated". He revealed the team had fractured at half-time in the recent Premier League game with
Tottenham Hotspur, with the score 1-1 at the time, though his most stinging criticism was levelled
at an unnamed team-mate whose attitude had shocked him. "There was a problem at half-time [against
Spurs]," he said. "The only thing that I could say at half-time was: 'Guys, we resolve these
problems after the match, not at half-time.'/pp"When, as captain, some players come up to you and
talk to you about a player ... complaining about him ... and then during the match you speak to
this player and the player in question insults us. There comes a time where we can no longer
comprehend how this can happen. I'm trying to defend myself a bit without giving names. Otherwise

he does not hold the Football Association responsible for the training injury sustained on Tuesday
