DIY mechanics can now build a Hybrid to save some bucks and help the planet. The XR3 holds two
passengers and can get 125 mpg on diesel and 225 mpg when combined with electricity. Weighing a
mere 1,480 lbs., designer Robert Q. Riley promises fast acceleration and a maximum speed of 80
mph. With a clam shell canopy and three-wheel platform, use battery power alone for up to 40
miles distance. You can build the XR3 in a diesel only model for less than $10,000.00 while a
Li-ion version can cost up to $25,000.00. Plans will set you back $170.00 to $200.00.

Yes, sometimes the greatest DIY projects are built not from scratch but from the cannibalized
bits of other, less-brilliant controllers. Together, these pieces become greater as a whole, from
bland and boring to bizarre and fantastic.
Case in point: Devin aka “mzo” writes us with his Cyrillic-emblazoned custom
controller creation for VJ control.
The controller is built from modifying 3 off the shelf controllers (M-Audio Trigger Finger,
Belkin Nostromo n52 gamepad and the old Mixman Dm2) into a custom made, laser etched box with a
cold-war soviet space station theme (hence the name Def-con, also Definable-controller because of
its flexibility in programming). The computer still sees the thing as 3 seperate and unmodified
devices and I program them for my vj’ing using the respective software for each (although
the dm2 to midi software isn’t from the manufacturer). This also makes the controller
suitable for a wide variety of applications including dj’ing.
I currently use this controller with Vjamm, Resolume, Live and Traktor with custom control setups
for each.
I was curious about more details of how the controller mappings were used in action, so Devin
sent more.
Full-size image
download of above
No videos, but he did write up some other impressions:
The dm2 is unfortunately pretty janky so the joystick is a little unreliable and the scratch
wheel needs some fine tuning. The n52 is definitely my favorite controller ever, i’ve
dj’d tons of parties using just the n52 and vr goggles with no computer in sight to bust
out whole sets.
I’ve attached the diagram of my current resolume def-con setup (I actually reference the
printout of it when playing still since its pretty newish) so that you and the readers can get an
idea of how it’s actually used.
God I can’t wait for resolume 3 so I can use resolume for avj’ing instead of having
to switch between vjamm and resolume mappings!
If readers were interested for whatever reason I could also package up my mapping files for the
devices and resolume.
So, what do you think? Would those mappings be useful?
(And yeah, we’re excited about
Resolume 3, too!)

If anyone else has gone Dr. Frankenstein on their own controller, we’d love to hear about
it.

 Since you
can't even really call it a car anymore if it hasn't been blasted around the 'Ring in development,
Jaguar has taken the mechanicals of the next XJ sedan to
everyone's favorite playground. Those internals wear the ill-fitting sheetmetal of the current XJ,
with the addition of serious wheel arches and a fire-breathing nose.
The real thing to take away from the story is this: the car has been described as "the XF's
features... draped over an Aston Martin Rapide." Frankly, we were happy when the XJ's design was
moved away from mimicking the Mercedes CLS. And we have come to appreciate the design of the XF.
But this equation: XF + Rapide = XJ is the kind of thing that could go wrong. Mr. Callum, however,
has earned the benefit of the doubt, so we will wait for the feast for our eyes to decide.

after entering rm/var/db/.AppleSetupDone an error was created

I think my wireless mighty mouse's scroll wheel is defective (can't scroll up), it scroll's
down.
I purchased it along with my 24 inch iMac last December. Is it under a 1 year warranty or 90 day
warranty. I am having a hard time googling the answer on apple's website.
Also, I have a 3 year Apple warranty on the iMac. Does the warranty apply to the wireless
mouse/keyboard since I purchased it in the same package?

Fantastic Contraption is a
free, simplified riff on the old Incredible Machine game. Your aim is to
move a box into a zone by hooking together some wheels and sticks. It lacks the inventive motor
elements of the older game (set the balloon to pop to lower the basket that has the mice that
will cause the elephant to move onto the scale that flips the lighter that sets off the rocket,
etc.), but its simplicity also works in its favor.
You may have a child that will love it. You might also. If not, there are bunches of other games
on the site.

We'd say the
jump from traditional optical mice to
laser mice was pretty momentous, and it
sounds like Microsoft is getting ready to jump again -- Microsoft Hardware put up a teaser this
afternoon for a September 9th announcement featuring the tagline "Say Goodbye to Laser." Yeah,
that's not exactly subtle, is it? We're hoping a return to old-school trackballs with grimy little
wheels is in order, but we're just sentimentalists at heart.

click above for gallery of the Ferrar Monza concept
It appears that after seeing a number of its finest works crashed by errant drivers, Ferrari has
decided to make a... something... that its designer says is simply too much for humans to drive.
It's called the Monza, and it's part car, part motorcycle, part flying wing, and all anime.
Designed by Iman Maghsoudi, the Monza, whose name recalls historic Ferraris of yore and the race
track that hosts the Italian Grand Prix, can go 125 miles per hour. But because humans cannot
muster "sufficient concentration" to keep it on the ground and upright, computers take over. They
change the angles of the canards over the front wheels and make sure the Monza doesn't go airborne
in violent gusts. This study in advanced aerodynamics appears to be the road-going equivalent of an
F-16, which seems to be a rather complicated way to go speeds that aren't considered that fast
anymore. But hey, it's a Ferrari, it's red, no one else has one, and if we got the chance we'd
drive it, too.

The courtship between Audi and GT3-class racing teams has officially begun with the automaker's
announcement that it has developed a GT3 version of the R8 sports car dubbed "R16" internally by
its project overlords at Audi Sport . The rear-drive racer (GT3 regulations prohibit AWD) features
a six-speed sequential gearbox, mostly production-spec suspension components, plus an updated front
end and a large rear wing designed to keep it planted to the tarmac. No additional tech specs have
been revealed at this time. Factory driver Frank Biela was at the wheel for the prototype's
roll-out, and customer deliveries are expected to take place next fall. Look for the car to see
wheel-to-wheel action against the likes of the Aston Martin DBRS9 and
Jaguar XKR GT3
during the 2009 European racing season. We patiently await its inclusion in a future Gran Turismo
update so that we can try it out, too.

Don't know if anyone is interested, but I found it really cool that I could play my favorite MUD on
my DS using DSlinux and it's telnet client. Furthermore once I had set up binds/aliases, it
actually wasn't much of a hassle,of course long conversations are a sure way to a hand cramp but
moving around and fighting actually can be faster in some respects. Plus I didn't need any RAM
expansion like the Supercard or 3-in-1. You of course will need homebrew wi-fi connect ability.
I am using the Games N Music for this, but it should work on any DLDI compatible device.
If you don't know what a MUD is, you probably won't be interested but for those who don't, a MUD is
a Multi-User-Dungeon, basically a text-only MMORPG, sort of.
I did a search around and found that there was no information about MUDs on the DS and decided to
write this up.I did find a MUDClient for the PSP, wow that must be hard.
If you are already using dslinux and wi-fi, you may have thought of this already, or dismissed it
as too annoying to be useful.I think that it's very playable but not everyone may think so.
For this rough How-to, some knowledge of DSOrganize would be useful. I use the hacked nintendo
wi-fi usb dongle, but I believe any "softAP" capable wireless device will work in connecting your
DS to your wi-fi.
First download the file below. It is a version of DSlinux that works with no ram expansion and
DSOrganize_3_1129,which is used to alter a linux config file without corrupting it.(I also
customized the Icons in DSO and this is last stable version.) I'd like to note I didn't compile
this version of DSlinux, someone posted it on dslinux forum.
DSO and DSlinux
http://www.mediafire.com/?qptjkai2kj1
The reason we are using DSOrganize to edit DSlinux config files is that Windows notepad(or any
windows/dos text editor) corrupts the .conf file rendering it useless in linux, plus around the web
it tells you to use some linux text-editor that is hard to find and execute.
Extract the folder and place it's contents directly in the root of your card. The folders need to be
in the root, I don't think the .nds files need to be but thats where I put them. DLDI patch DSlinux
and DSOrganize.nds(unless by chance you use a GnM card).
Boot up your DS and then DSOrganize.nds.
Using the DSO browser, navigate to /linux/etc find rc.defaults,
copy it somewhere(use shoulder buttons to alter DSO's functions). Rename
rc.defaults to rc.conf.The rc.conf file needs to be in
/linux/etc folder.
As far as I know the DS hates DCHP connection. If you are using the DS for homebrew, you will
already know what your ip's,gateway's and mask's etc. are.If not You can open up your command
prompt in windows and use ipconfig command to see your wireless networks IP and
gateway
Open rc.conf with DSOrganize.
Plug in your essid, channel, wepkey,IP,Gatewaynetmask, broadcast, and dns1, make sure you enable
network on boot. The quotes are needed.
enable_network_on_boot="YES"
essid="youressid"
wepkey="yourwepkey"
ip="your static DS IP"
gateway="your wireless connection's IP"
netmask="your Subnet Mask for your wireless connection"
broadcast="youressid"
dns1="your Wireless Network Connection's IP"
I don't use a WEP key, so don't know if using it screws something up.My DS hates security.
While still in /linux/etc .Open resolv.conf and plug in your
wireless connections IP instead of the one below.(This can all be done inside DSOrganize.) Quotes
are not needed here.
nameserver 192.168.1.1
If you can get all this crap figured out, then when you boot dslinuxNORAM2.nds, it
will auto-connect you to your wireless.
Font Size
First, the tiny font will leave you with a massive headache so I've included some different font
sizes.
Type the following exactly, consolechars -f font2
Use font3 to check if you like that better.(Simply press D-Pad up to cycle through whats been typed
already for ease.) consolechars -f font2,whichever one you choose will need to be
entered every time you start dslinux, before you start telnet.
Connecting to a MUD server.
(for this example I will use Wheel of Time MUD because it is my favorite and has PK)
type telnet to start Telnet.
Type telnet wotmud.org 2222
This will connect you to wotmud.org, but should work for any telnet MUD, I tested some others like
Discworld.Type telnet discworld.atuin.net 23 that worked fine.So just leave out
the ":".
A brief look at "aliases"
Once inside the MUD with your new character hopefull your favorite MUD will use binds or
alias's.
For instance in WOTMUD, if I want to make a shortcut to allow me to "look in sack" I would type
alias ls look in sack and then every time I type ls then enter,
it would execute look in sack.
Luckily on the DS with telnet the A Button=Enter. The D-pad and the X and Y buttons
create a string of characters when pushed.
Pressing D-pad UP creates the string ^[[A, the rest of the directions create
something similar. The X-Button creates a group "^[[5" and the Y-Button creates "^[[6".
So by creating an alias of alias ^[[A north every time I press the D-Pad UP
followed by the A-button, I go North. I usually assign the X-button to something I kill a lot.
alias ^[[5 kill deer for example. Furthermore you can do double tap button binds,
like alias ^[[5^[[5 kill stag, so pressing X-Button twice followed by the A-button
will "kill stag".
Incredibly I found that with skillful binding and some quick fingers I was able to move around and
kill quicker then on my computer(unless I am using Zmud). Player Killing Battles would seem easier
to "spam" in too.
Hope that all made sense and is useful to someone.

Origins, as the name implies, lets players experience the 1st level of the game, in which
you guide a single-cell organism through the primordial ooze. Game play is straight forward: Use
the click wheel to guide Jr. around, and the center button to eat other organisms he finds. No word

Well, they're here. Nokia's latest and greatest
N-series devices just hit the market like a trio of well-aimed bricks -- or at least that's what
Nokia's hoping. We got to spend a little bit of hands-on time with prototypes of the new devices,
and while we came away slightly impressed, we were nowhere near E-series impressed. Here's our
biggest problem with the lineup: the only one worth talking about is the N85. Other
than minor screen size disparities, the 16GB built-in memory of the N96 and the
fresh candybar form of the N79, these
three phones are pretty much exactly identical on specs, and yet the N96 manages to be inexcusably
bulky, while the N79 sports an inexcusably terrible screen -- we're hoping that was just the
prototype being funky, but we saw two versions with the same problem. The N85 isn't exactly the
pinnacle of thinphoneness, but its amazing OLED screen and more refined design make the N96 look
like more of a rough draft than a sibling. On the interface side, the phones are much more
responsive to S60's new motion and transitions, but Nokia has oddly chosen to disable the Navi
Wheel scrolling in all three phones -- a weird move, but we can't say we blame them, we haven't had
a single good experience with Navi Wheel since Nokia introduced it. In all, we're not exactly
thrilled about Nokia's prospects for winning over the masses with this new series of devices. Sure,
Nokia will protest that it's going after the high-end users, but 5 megapixel cameras, GPS and WiFi
are no longer the differentiators they once were, and users have begun to expect thinner, sexier
devices at prices far below the N96's gargantuan $895 pricetag.
