pMicrosoft (a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=MSFT"
class="ticker" title="MSFT"NSDQ: MSFT/a) just added some a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagniappe" title="lagniappe"lagniappe/a to its Zune Pass music
subscription: effective now, 10 tracks a month can be downloaded for keeps. It's a nice gesture for
subscribers—I am one so can attest to that—but it's also a
very real PR effort to goose interest in the subscription model. To expand the $14.99 monthly
subscription, the company crafted new payment agreements with all four
majors—EMI, Sony, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music
Group—and indie distributors INgrooves, Independent Online Distribution
Alliance and The Orchard. Microsoft values the tracks at approximately $10 (not in the confusing
conceit of Zune Marketplace points), which would take the cost of the actual subscription to about
$5 a month for those who make all the permanent downloads. /p p -- bLiner notes/b: The 10 permanent
tracks can be burned to CD or moved to other devices even after the subscription ends. The Zune
Pass currently allows subscription sharing between three PCs and three Zunes. An updated version of
Zune's software started distribution Tuesday. Sony BMG and UMG also agreed to provide DRM-free
MP3s, joining EMI, WMG and some of the indie labels. Microsoft says Zune's library soon will offer
90 percent of its music as MP3s. /p p -- a

label based on what music is downloaded for good." br / /p piSocial Media Deals Report: This

Zune Pass subscription servicemdash;a pretty sweet deal alreadymdash;has just porked up their offer
by giving you 10 free songs that you can ikeep/i every month. We've talked about Zune Pass in our
Zune reviews before, but it's basically access to all of the Zune Marketplace for only the price of
a CD a month. Since most of their catalog (90% or so, including all the majors and a few indie
labels) is already in MP3 format, you can load these free songs on any kind of device you want,
like your iPhone or Android phone or PS3 or Wii./p pThey're also announcing the addition of
Universal Music Group and Sony BMG to the MP3 DRM-less format (DRM-less as long as you buy the
music), the last bits to complete their "majors" MP3 collection. We think the deal is hotness as
long as you're OK with the fact that you're renting, not buying; well, you're now "buying" those
ten tracks a month, in essence. [a href="http://www.zune.net"Zune/a]/p br style="clear: both;"/ img

There's just nothing like the holiday season, folks. That warm, fuzzy feeling you get when spending
